Lot 1065 COLOMBIA, Medellín, half peso, 1868, extremely rare, NGC VF details / damaged.

COLOMBIA, Medellín, half peso, 1868, extremely rare, NGC VF details / damaged. Restrepo-292.1; KM-152. 12.33 grams. Nicely toned, with a few old marks and scratches that offended NGC, overall a rather acceptable example of this desirable one-year type that began the popular half dollar series for Colombia. The original law specified that this new denomination was to be a "medio peso," but this ended up being the only coin actually struck with that denomination, as the others from this year forward were denominated as "cinco décimos"; ironically and inexplicably, this issue shows MEDIO PESO punched over CINCO DECIMOS. Only six examples are known (according to Restrepo), with just two having crossed the block in recent years (each in five figures).
