COLOMBIA, Cartagena, "imitation cob" 4 reales, Ferdinand VII, fantasy date "I88" (ca. 1815), quadrants of cross transposed, very rare, NGC VF 30. Restrepo 119.1; Cal-Type 255; KM-unl. 6.53 grams. Richly toned, off-center strike with left pillar bold and full, flanked by L-LV-M to left and 4-SVL-188 to right (right pillar and area beyond flat), nearly full cross with bold •M• to right, typically struck over a previous issue but without any under-coin evidence visible, a rather choice example of a very rare ephemeral type (Restrepo: "About five known"), surely among the finest known for the "188" date. Appears as "top pop" in the NGC census, but misattributed to Barinas - Caujaral, Venezuela.
