SPAIN, Barcelona, gold cob 1 escudo, Charles II, assayer not visible, obverse struck from 2E die, unique, NGC AU 53, finest and only example in NGC census. Cal-Type 124; KM-unl; Fr-unl. 3.33 grams. Somewhat oblong flan with boldly detailed but clearly oversized shield, equally bold but off-center cross, both sides in a distinctive style for the Barcelona mint but not matching any of the known examples with visible dates in the 1670s, toned on fields, a very interesting coin of particular importance to collectors of mainland Spanish-mint gold cobs.
