Clear glass serving dish, ex-Empress of Ireland (1914). 207 grams. 5" in diameter; 1" deep. Pressed glass dish, intact, with a ribbed edge and radiating sun pattern in center. This wreck is known as "Canada's Titanic," as it was the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Canadian history. In the early hours of May 29, 1914, the fog-shrouded ship was struck midship on its starboard side by the Norwegian collier Storstad. The Empress of Ireland foundered and sank in 14 minutes, with only 465 passengers and crew saved among the 1,477 on board. From the Empress of Ireland (1914), pedigreed to the collection of diver Bart Malone, past curator of the Museum of New Jersey Maritime History.
