PHILIPPINES (U.S. administration), San Francisco Mint, 1 peso, 1905-S, straight serif, rare, PCGS MS62. KM-168; Allen-16.06a. The 1905-S straight serif peso is one of the rarest variants in its series and has long been considered a key piece in any serious Philippines peso collection. The triangular top of the 1 in the date is clear and denotes this important variety from the much more common curved serif type. Rare in any form, Mint State examples of this variety appear very infrequently on the market. Rich red and blue toning drapes the semi-lustrous surfaces; while close examination of the fields does show very minor marks, the overall appearance is a bit better than the numerical grade infers.
