SPAIN, Seville, 4 reales, Ferdinand-Isabel, assayer ? on reverse, mintmark oSo to left of shield, broad flan with legend ending in GRAN, very rare, NGC AU 55, "top pop," Pellicer i Bru and López de la Fuente Plate Coin. López de la Fuente-H5.5.28 (this coin); Pellicer i Bru-26; Cal-561. 13.25 grams. Exceptional example on a broad flan with all legends, crown, and inner details full and well struck, with lovely old toning all over, important pedigrees. Note: The planchet for this is not broad simply by caprice or whim; rather it is intentionally broad, for the engraver at the time stuffed the die with more legend lettering than on any other, in any denomination. The difference is the listing of the regions encompassed by the king and queen's joint rule, which in full would read CASTEL (Castile) LEGIONIS (León) ARAGON (Aragón) GRANADA (Granada). Even the largest 8R do not show all of these names and typically stop before Aragón, with significant abbreviations along the way. Plate Coin 26 on page 35 of Pellicer i Bru's El Medio Duro (1971), and Plate Coin H5.5.28 on page 558 of López de la Fuente's Los Reales de los Reyes Católicos (2018).
