Lot 1128 GREAT BRITAIN, London, England, Tower mint, gold noble, Edward III, mintmark cross potent (1361-69),

GREAT BRITAIN, London, England, Tower mint, gold noble, Edward III, mintmark cross potent (1361-69), NGC MS 64. Sp-1503; North-1232; Fr-95. 7.69 grams. Late issue of Edward III’s iconic noble coinage, struck during England’s ascendancy in the Hundred Years’ War following the Treaty of Brétigny. The obverse depicts the king standing in a ship, emblematic of naval dominance, while the reverse shows the intricate floriated cross, a hallmark of the series. The cross potent mintmark identifies it as a later, more refined phase of production.

With rich gold color with sharp detail throughout, aside from minor softness in a small part of the legend, as is typical for hammered coinage, this coin is choice for the type, with strong eye appeal and superior preservation for late medieval gold.
