BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, (1641) (TR), quadrants of cross transposed ("furry" lions), Portuguese inescutcheon for Flanders-Tirol, very rare. S-P27; KM-19a; Cal-unl (Type 327). 27.72 grams. Full 164 of date outside of bold cross, well-detailed full shield with clear Portuguese inescutcheon on bottom half (known for the date 1641 only), most of king's name in legend, unevenly thick AVF. According to Bolivian researcher Daniel Oropeza Alba, this strange issue (more prominent on the Royals for this year) is linked to a Portuguese neighborhood within Potosí known as the "Lusitanos" that suffered persecution and dispossession of property as a result of the Portuguese revolution of 1640, which ended Spanish control and restored the Portuguese throne under the Duke of Braganza (João IV). Pedigreed to the Ponterio auction of January 1993, with original lot-tag 358 (erroneously cataloged as 1624).
