According to Bowers' paper "The SS Republic Shipwreck Excavation Project: the Coin Collection," there were 403 1853 halves recovered from the wreck. Choice, bold Mint State coin with very minor surface corrosion and still retaining mint luster in areas, popular type from this wreck with arrows flanking the date and plentiful rays emanating from behind the eagle.
