Lot 75 Small silver "plata corriente" cut piece with partial tax stamp from the early to mid-1500s, 10.96 g
Small silver "plata corriente" cut piece with partial tax stamp from the early to mid-1500s, 10.96 grams, about 96% fine. Roughly 5/8" x ½" x ¼". Thick little chunk of silver, crudely broken from the interior of a "splash" ingot and stamped on one side with a circular seal showing legend letters TOR (probably from the same CAROLVS IMPERATOR seen on "tumbaga" silver ingots, in reference to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor), with minimal oxidation on surfaces, toning around details, and brownish encrustation in crevices, XRF tested at about 96% silver with 2% lead. Pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 26, with original lot-tag 101.
