Lot 50 COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1701/0, assayer V.A at end of shield-side legend, PHILIPPS V D
COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1701/0, assayer V.A at end of shield-side legend, PHILIPPS V D G over CAROLVS II, backwards cross-side legend, rare, NGC UNC details / cleaned (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), ARCE Plate. ARCE-61 (this coin); Restrepo-unl (M66); S-B24; KM-unl (14.2 for type); Cal-1917 (under Ph. V); Fr-unl. 6.67 grams. Fascinating coin, toned in crevices, with mostly bold full shield and cross and much legend including full date that is listed as clean 1701 on the NGC label but is actually a modified 1700 die, also with more obverse legend than has been seen on any other example, including a bold (PHILIPP)VS V. D. G. V.A lightly punched over (CAROL)VS II. ARCE, but perhaps the most interesting aspect is that the reverse-side legend reads [XE]R . M[VRAINAPSIH] with the 7 of the date punched over an upside-down 7! This issue is one of several very interesting Transitional varieties of 1700-1704 presented in Daniel Sedwick's new die study, in which this coin is plated. From the 1715 Fleet, with Sedwick photo-certificate, Plate Coin 61 on page 76 of Sedwick's Arce's Doubloons (2025).
