Lot 31 PERU, Cuzco, gold cob 2 escudos, 1698 M, "Lima cut," error-variety with RX in legend, rare, NGC MS 6

PERU, Cuzco, gold cob 2 escudos, 1698 M, "Lima cut," error-variety with RX in legend, rare, NGC MS 64 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label, 300th Anniversary Find), "top pop." S-CZ1; Cal-855; KM-28; Fr-4. 6.74 grams. Choice example of this desirable one-year issue on an extremely broad flan (as opposed to the small, thick "Bogotá cut" flans that are more typical), with full crown and legends, including bold RX (lacking the E) and C.II. for Charles II, bold full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves, the latter doubled but highly lustrous, overall a stunning coin in top grade (currently tied with nine others for finest in the NGC census), representing this rare type at its finest level of preservation and eye appeal. The special “1715 Fleet 300th Anniversary Find” label and designation by NGC refer to the fact that this coin was among a group of gold cobs recovered by divers for Queens Jewels in 2015, exactly 300 years after the date of the sinking, specified on the Queens Jewels certificate as “Tricentennial Hoard." From the 1715 Fleet ("300th Anniversary Find"), with original Queens Jewels photo-certificate 79503.
