Lot 1836 CUBA, struck at the Gorham Mint, proof 1 peso, 1898, rare key date, NGC PF 61, ex-EMO, ex-Busto.
CUBA, struck at the Gorham Mint, proof 1 peso, 1898, rare key date, NGC PF 61, ex-EMO, ex-Busto. KM-A8. Only 1,000 pieces minted by the Gorham Manufacturing Company. This second year of mintage (without SOUVENIR in the design) was proposed just three weeks after the explosion and sinking of the USS Maine in the Havana harbor. According to Emilio Ortiz in Money of the Caribbean, on March 9, 1898, Gorham agreed "to make one thousand Cuban Coins in about four days from the receipt of the order." Frosty bust and arms stand out against mirror proof fields on this piece, a few surface hairlines and small contact marks are noted, some speckles of deep toning around the rims. Pedigreed to the EMO Collection (stated on the label) and to the José O. Busto Collection.
