Lot 535 MEXICO, Mexico City, 2 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer P to left, mintmark M to righ
MEXICO, Mexico City, 2 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer P to left, mintmark M to right (oPo-oMo, dotted annulets), motto as PLVS in right-leaning rhomboid panel with double dotted annulets on either side, rare, NGC AU details / corrosion, ex-Sedwick-Downing (stated on label). Nesmith-20 type/20; S-M4; Cal-92; KM-11. 6.43 grams. While types with the assayer initial to the right are not uncommon, those with the assayer initial to the left (like this example) are rare and probably some of the earliest emissions from this assayer. Note the misspellings of HISPANDIE and IOANA. The stops in the legends are early types too with dotted annulets. Clear legends and full interiors despite some pits of corrosion on pillars side, lightly toned. Pedigreed to the Sedwick-Downing Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage.
