UNITED STATES, New Orleans mint, Seated Liberty half dollar, 1857-O, date in rock, NGC Shipwreck Effect (B) XF (SS Republic Shipwreck Label). KM-A68. Interesting variety with the date erroneously punched in the rock below Liberty, then corrected. XF with some retained luster, almost no corrosion. According to Bowers' paper "The SS Republic Shipwreck Excavation Project: the Coin Collection," 747 1857-O halves were recovered from the wreck. Recovered from: S.S.
