PERU, Lima, gold bust 4 escudos, Charles III, 1770 JM, third bust, very rare, NGC AU details / plugged, ex-Almenara, ex-Superior. Cal-1753, Fr-29; KM-71.2. Very bold and fully detailed bust, lustrous but hairlined, with small but crudely plugged hole at top, still a desirable example of a very rare three-year type (unique to this mint) with hybrid bust showing early armor and drapery but older head (described in Calicó as second "rat nose" type). Pedigreed to the Superior auction of December 1999 (lot 309) and to the Almenara Collection (stated on label).
