BOLIVIA, oval silver medal, Ferdinand VII, dated 1816, victors of Laguna and Villar, NGC AU 58, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Derman. Cunietti-p. 58; Fonrobert-8026. Rare medal (first we have offered) struck in Potosí and issued to Royalist forces for their part in the Battle of La Laguna in El Villar on September 13-14, 1816 (listed in Fonrobert as La Guaira under Colombia in error). Obverse with winged victory sounding its horn and holding a laurel over clouds, legend encircling A LOS ESFORZAS VENCEDORES EN LA LAGA Y VILLAR. and florette above; reverse with knight's helm above crossed cannons, flags, musket, and trumpet with drum and drumsticks below, 13 Y 14 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1816. encircling with florette at top; smooth edge. Lustrous example with well-struck details throughout, slight golden toning across its surfaces. As outlined in Cunietti, this medal was effectively a reward for the defeat and capture of guerrilla leader Manuel Asencio Padilla in his attempt to rescue his pregnant wife, Juana Azurduy de Padilla (who was herself a military leader during the fight for independence) during the Battle of La Laguna in modern-day Bolivia. Padilla was summarily executed by beheading, and his head was displayed publicly to further thwart the revolution. In 1827 the former town of La Laguna (originally San Miguel de La Laguna) was renamed Padilla in his memory. Pedigreed to the Alberto "Coco" Derman collection. COLOMBIA, small oval uniface silver military decoration, no date (1819), Battle of Boyacá.
COLOMBIA, small oval uniface silver military decoration, no date (1819), Battle of Boyacá. Ross & Stahl-Co2 var; Fonrobert-9180 (obv only). 5.50 grams. 26 mm x 22 mm. Crossed sword and branch below large cross pattée with BOYACA above, all encircled by a laurel border, per the obverse of Fonrobert-9180 (muled with an Ayacucho reverse), first example we have seen of this side, and very important as related to "Colombia's first military medals as a sovereign nation" per Ross & Stahl, whose listing for handmade 1819 originals differs slightly in showing VENCEDOR DE BOYACA. The present medal is from a new series minted in Potosí in 1825 to satisfy officers who did not receive one in 1819, but evidently this example was never awarded, as it still retains an uncut loop at top. Richly toned Mint State with multicolor-hued, lustrous surfaces, well-struck details all around, and of course very rare, one of probably only three known.

UNITED STATES, gold State Department Lifesaving medal, First Class, awarded by President McKinley to seaman W.P. Pattison of the British steamship Mokta for his heroic services on February 27, 1900, in the rescue of four men of the American schooner Golden Sheaf, unique, NGC AU 58 (photo certificate). J-LS-3. 44.00 grams. 35 mm. This .900 gold medal shows Liberty on the obverse inside the legend PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, with a wreath border on the reverse surrounding engraved script commemorating the presentation of this medal "To W.P. Pattison, seaman of the British steamship 'Mokta' in recognition of his heroic services in effecting the rescue February 27, 1900 of four men of the American schooner 'Golden Sheaf' wrecked at sea." The medal is suspended from a hanger bar with E PLURIBUS UNUM partially covered by a shield. According to The Cambrian issue of December 7th, 1900, the Mokta "on a voyage from Huelva to Philadelphia, was some 400 or 500 miles from the American seaboard in the North Atlantic, they sighted the American schooner, Golden Sheaf, flying signals of distress." The Mokta launched a lifeboat in "a hurricane of wind, and a mountainous sea" crewed by one officer and six men who, upon reaching the Golden Sheaf, were able to transport four men in need of rescue by tying ropes about their waists and dragging them behind the lifeboat back to the Mokta. After landing in Philadelphia, the crew of the Mokta were celebrated in American newspapers and those British sailors participating in the rescue were eventually awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal, First Class by President McKinley. Lustrous example of this unique medal with just a touch of handling and hairlines from wear and display. Please use this link to verify the certification number

SPAIN, Madrid, bust 2 reales, Charles III, 1778 PJ, NGC / excavation recovery (Marblehead Hoard Label). Cal-627; KM-412.1. Though coins of the Spanish New World colonial mints (Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru) made up a majority of this hoard, a few coins from Spain show how early United States commerce saw a blend of European and South American coinage. At the time of the hoard's burial, this coin would have functioned as a quarter dollar or 25 cent piece. VF with decent obverse showing a bold date while the reverse is heavily encrusted and stained. Treasure, World, U.S. Coin & Paper Money Auction 35

VENEZUELA, 2 pesos, 27-8-1811, serial F. 31 67301, block T. 68, PMG VF 25.
VENEZUELA, 2 pesos, 27-8-1811, serial F. 31 67301, block T. 68, PMG VF 25. Pick-5; Rosenman-2. Signatures of Bartolomé Blandin, Juan Germán Roscio, and Martín Tovar Ponte. A desirable example of the 2 pesos from the second issue of Venezuela’s paper money decreed in 1811, among the first notes used in Venezuela, with a radiant sun seal with 1811 ESTADOS UNIDOS DE VENEZUELA and another seal featuring an anchor and tree between sailing ships bears the warning PENA DE MUERTE AL FALSIFICADOR "Death Penalty to Counterfeit." Extremely rare in any condition and not priced at any level in the Pick catalog. This example is an eye-appealing survivor, having been apparently mounted in an album at one time, thus preserving it from damage. The printing, while somewhat crude, is bold and fully legible. Light mounting marks and a few small stains on the reverse are noted. A rare opportunity to acquire a nice example of the earliest notes in Venezuela paper currency. VENEZUELA, 1 peso, 27-8-1811, serial F. 94 272938, block T. 273, PMG VF 30. Pick-4; Rosenman-1. Signatures of Bartolomé Blandin, Juan Germán Roscio, and Martín Tovar Ponte. A nice example of the highest denomination printed for the first issue of Venezuela paper money authorized by law of August 27, 1811. The independent First Republic of Venezuela had been declared just a month prior on July 5th. A central vignette featuring an anchor and tree between sailing ships bears the warning PENA DE MUERTE AL FALSIFICADOR "Death Penalty to Counterfeit." Nice paper quality and well printed with bold ink, only a few mounting spots on the back to note. Scarcely encountered at all and much rarer in as nice of a condition as this note.
