Mendoza, Argentina, "imitation cob" 2 reales, "818" date (ca. 1823 clandestine coinage), extremely rare, NGC AU 55, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Stohr. Janson-10.1; KM-unl. 4.55 grams. Nicely toned and choice condition (many grades higher than the Janson-plated example), with 100% full pillars-and-waves and cross-lions-castles, XRF-tested at 94% fine silver. After about a century of misattribution to Venezuela based on Medina, these "818" coins are now tentatively attributed to clandestine issuance in Mendoza by virtue of a single example known with Mendoza "Fidelidad" countermark from a decree of December 2, 1823 (see Janson-10.2 on page 472 of his latest edition from 2020). Pedigreed to the Tomas Stohr collection. Please use this link to verify the certification number

Potosi, Bolivia, gold bust 2 escudos, Charles III, 1779 PR, NGC XF 40, finest and only example in NGC census. Janson-70.2; Cal-1655; KM-57; Fr-4. Potosi, Bolivia, bust 8 reales, Ferdinand VII, 1813 PJ, error with king's ordinal as IIV, rare, NGC XF 45. Janson-86.3.2; Cal-1376; KM-84. Traces of luster and gray toning over only lightly worn surfaces (the bust just weakly struck), the egregious error a rare and desirable key for the series. Chile (struck at the Paris Mint), white metal essai pattern for 1/2 decimo, 1851, rare. KM-PnA9 var. 1.26 grams. The obverse features a portrait of Liberty with laurel of putti (cherubs), a somewhat whimsical design that the famous Paris engraver Barre (whose name appears below) experimented with for several years after the Concours Monetaire of 1848, but the design was never adopted for production coinage for France or any other country. The reverse design bears a three-line inscription PRESSES / MONETAIRES / DU CHILI / ESSAI above the date 1851, in reference to Chile's commissioning of a steam-powered coin press from France as part of their adoption of the decimal standard on January 9 of that year. The elegant obverse design is more commonly seen in larger denominations and in other metals, this one being an alloy of 61% iridium, 10% tin and 26% lead (according to XRF testing). AU with tinges of luster and darker areas, a few minor nicks (mostly in rims). Pedigreed to the Coleccion Val y Mexia (stated on special NGC label that accompanies this piece).

It is interesting to note that NGC (and some catalogers) erroneously attribute this issue as a restrike due to a misreading of Medina's reference work Las Monedas Obsidionales de Chile (1919), in which he mentions someone (probably Medina himself) finding the dies for the 50 centavos and making "just a few" restrikes... but the pesos (which are more common) are original to 1865 and the Blockade of Puerto de Caldera in the war against Spain. Bogota, Colombia, 50 centavos, 1888, "Cocobola" bust, extremely rare, PCGS MS61, ex-Pat Johnson. Restrepo-405.2; KM-185. With light toning over muted luster and just a few minor marks, this coin is clearly superior to the VF30 example we hammered for $10,000 in Auction 27 (May 2020). Unfortunately PCGS misattributed the present piece to the Wyon-bust type (Restrepo-406.1), with only the aforementioned VF30 properly listed, while NGC does not differentiate between the two types in its census; it can be safely assumed the present example is one of the finest among the "five known" stated by Restrepo. The nickname "Cocobola" has an interesting origin: The area known as Panama, which after Independence became part of Colombia, often found itself in a state of revolt, and one of the worst was in March 1885, when the Colombian general Pedro Prestan led a revolution in the city of Colon against the regime of Colombian president Rafael Nunez, who was working toward a more centralized and authoritarian Colombian nation, culminating in the abrogation of the "Rionegro" Constitution of 1863 and the formation of the new Republic of Colombia in 1886, in no small part due to the influence and machinations of the First Lady, Soledad Roman. Prestan's revolt, ostensibly opposing the involvement of the United States of America in the conflict (the US's interest, of course, being the construction of a canal connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea), employed two Caribbean liberals, the Haitian Antoine Pautricelli and the Jamaican George Davis, to burn down the city of Colon. George Davis, later hanged for this crime, was better known as "Cocobolo." When the first new half dollars of the Republic of Colombia came out in 1887, using the same unpopular reduced fineness (50% silver) that had been ordered by Nunez in 1885, but also with the portrait of his wife, his opponents took the opportunity to mock the use of Soledad's portrait on the coins and recall the Panamanian revolt by nicknaming the coins "Cocobola" (feminized version of Cocobolo). Costa Rica, 50 centimos, 1917 GCR, extremely rare, NGC MS 63.
Costa Rica, 50 centimos, 1917 GCR, extremely rare, NGC MS 63. KM-150. The knowledge of Costa Rican numismatics is quite advanced when compared to its neighbors in Central America, and key rarities of all series have been well known since the mid-20th century. Among these, the uncountermarked silver 50 centimos dated 1917 GCR is the pinnacle, due to its extreme rarity of just ten examples known having been incontrovertibly established since 1923. To quote Henry Christensen's transcription of a letter about this rarity by Carlos Echeverria, former Director of the Mint of Costa Rica (also transcribed in the works of Raul Gurdian and Jorge Murillo), when describing the ex-Lines-Stuart example (Christensen auction of May 1984, lot 380): "Of the legally issued rare coins of Costa Rica, certainly the .500 Fine 50 Centimos of 1917 stands in first place since it is known with certainty just how many exist without the 'UN COLON' and '1923' countermarks struck under law No. 93 of July 10, 1923. At the time of countermarking, all but 10 examples of the 1917 50 Centimos were restruck, these 10 pieces being held aside and replaced by other coins." Of these ten coins, we think this is the finest extant, superior in eye appeal to the aforementioned Lines-Stuart coin (also NGC MS 63), and with uninterrupted original bloom in basically unmarked fields sprinkled with light toning in hues of gold and blue. Without a doubt, this is a numismatic gem for the most advanced collectors. Please use this link to verify the certification number

Cuzco, Peru (State of South Peru), gold 8 escudos, 1837 BA, FEDERACION, rare, NGC MS 63. KM-167; Fr-91. South Peru produced some of the most beautifully designed coinage in South America during its three-year existence, first as a State within the Peru-Bolivian Confederation and then as its own Republic. The coins feature a deliberate attempt to combine Peru's rich cultural and political symbols. The current coin displays the earlier legend ESTADO SUD PERUANO and four stars representing the four constituent departments of South Peru (Ayacucho, Cuzco, Arequipa, and Puno) on the obverse. On the reverse, a volcano appears on the right and the Inca fortress Qorikancha on the left, with a galleon on waves at the top and a horn of plenty above the word FEDERACION at the bottom. The artistic effect is particularly lovely in gold, specifically the 8 escudos, making for what the numismatic auctioneer Bill Christensen once dubbed "the most beautiful gold coin of the Americas." On the present piece all these symbols stand out against a background of spectacular luster, the only flaw being traces of laminations above the fortress. With tremendous eye-appeal for the grade, very little quality separates this MS 63 coin from the census-topping MS 64's with famous names behind them. Manila, Philippines (under Spain), 8 reales, 1828 counterstamp (Type I) on a Lima, Peru, 8 reales, 1828 JM, very rare. KM-33; Cal-1303. 26.33 grams. The MANILA / 1828 is rather weak but fully visible along with some border (the host coin's legend bolder) while the other side shows a bold full crowned arms within minimal counterstamp legend (would read HABILITADO POR EL REY N.S.D. FERN. VII.) inside a complete and bold host-coin legend including 1828 date, Lima mintmark and JM assayer, lightly toned, broad-flan Fine overall. The rarity of this counterstamp issue is due to early discontinuation for the fact that there was not enough minting pressure to efface the peripheral host details and show the new border and legend (this piece being a prime example).

Segovia, Spain, gold milled 8 escudos, Charles II, 1687/3 BR, very rare, NGC UNC details / mount removed, repaired. Cal-1001; KM-197. 26.73 grams; 34mm diameter. Typically choice strike on a broad flan (beyond the design) with much luster, well preserved save for some marks and repairs on obverse, a very rare and popular type, typically made to order in just certain dates, reminiscent of Mexican Royals in appearance, with gaps in dates (like 1684-86, in this case) when not requisitioned, the dies re-used accordingly. This second type under Charles II is typically referred to as "sin escusion" for lacking the Portuguese escutcheon in the upper half of the shield, but in fact it is actually there, just very faint and hidden by the rest of the details. Venezuela, gold 500 bolivares, 1975, nationalization of the oil industry, NGC MS 69 ("top pop").
Venezuela, gold 500 bolivares, 1975, nationalization of the oil industry, NGC MS 69 ("top pop"). Fr-9; KM-Y54. The key coin of modern Venezuela, with only 100 examples struck, all in a proof finish (alternately called PF Ultra Cameo or MS by NGC, combined in the same census), and many subsequently melted. The design is unique, with cameo bust of Bolivar against mirror field inside a rounded-rhomboid incuse placed to right of center, the rest of that side frosty matte, and a similar arrangement on the reverse with oil derricks inside the mirror incuse (left of center). Die-polish lines pervade throughout, but no marks or cloudiness, just a faint red spot between the 7 and 5 in the date. Currently this specimen shares top honors at NGC with three other entries, but to our knowledge none of those has been auctioned in the past decade.
