Cuba (under Spain), gilt bronze medal, 1763, capture of Morro Castle (Havana) and deaths of Don Luis de Velasco and Vincenzo Gonzales, by T.F. Prieto. Betts-443; Eimer-704; Medina-12. 51.94 grams; 50 mm. This medal is typically filed under Cuba due to the location of the battle it depicts, but its manufacture was in Spain, and the commemoration is actually of a British victory, the capture of Morro Castle in Havana, on July 30, 1763, during the French and Indian War, resulting in the deaths of the Spanish officers shown on the obverse. This example rates XF or better, with bright gold plating almost completely covering the surfaces, the original dark brown peeking out only on high points.

Dominican Republic (under Spain), silver Gran Cruz knight's badge for the Spanish Order of Charles I
Dominican Republic (under Spain), silver Gran Cruz knight's badge for the Spanish Order of Charles III, dedicated in 1865 to Captain General Jose de la Gandara y Navarro as head of the troops in the War of Restoration in Santo Domingo (1863-65), unique and important. Perez Guerra-5 var. 51.66 grams; 70 x 70 mm. Maltese Cross-shaped silver decoration (missing three ball-points on cross-tips) with fleur-de-lis in corners and oval medallion in center showing a radiant Virgin Mary in heavy gold plating with white and blue enamel within blue enameled ring with gold lettering VIRTUTI / ET MERITO flanking blue ordinal III inside green wreath, the reverse with pin and loops for ribbon, script-engraved on the smooth silver back "Sus ayudantes / de Campo y oficiales / a las ordenes de V.E. / en 19 de Marzo de 1865 / en Santo Domingo." The Dominican Republic celebrates two dates of independence: the 1844 independence from Haiti and the 1865 independence from Spain, which had annexed Santo Domingo in 1861. The Dominican War of Restoration was a campaign to quell insurrection against Spanish domination beginning in the year 1863. Jose de la Gandara y Navarro led the Spanish troops in several bloody conflicts over the next two years, eventually resulting in the de-annexation of Santo Domingo by the Spanish in 1865. It appears this top-honors decoration, made in Spain but engraved in Santo Domingo, was given to Gandara just as the Dominican Republic achieved its second independence. While his name is not mentioned in the engraved dedication on this piece, the reference is clear and the date of dedication is the Feast of Saint Joseph, Gandara's patron saint.

Great Britain, copper Admiral Vernon medal, (ca. 1739), Vernon / naval scene, very rare, ex-Adams (plate), ex-Craige. AC-NLv1A. 27.53 grams; 40 mm. With high-relief bust of Vernon and high copper content (XRF: 97.68% copper), this is a traditional medal and not from the pinchbeck Vernon series, which it logically precedes since it depicts Vernon's fleet leaving England on the reverse. Dark chocolate UNC, probably the finest of only four reported to exist. Great Britain, tin Admiral Vernon medal, 1740, Vernon's flagship / naval scene, extremely rare, ex-Adams (plate), ex-Finn. AC-PB1A. 19.87 grams; 40 mm. Bright and lustrous AU with slightly convex obverse (indicative of a "sophisticated shop," according to Adams and Chao) showing Vernon's flagship above the date 1740, which is a bit of a mystery since the reverse shows two ships firing on forts under the name PORTO BELLO (a battle that took place in 1739). One of the rarest medals (only three reported) and clearly different from the usual series both in execution and metallic content (XRF: 98.12% tin). Choice XF+ in an evenly dark color, interesting for the fact that the lion and unicorn in the unusually fine-style coat of arms on obverse both have exaggerated "male parts" (perhaps satirical), not to mention the overtly Chinese-style face on the lion (indicative of an Asian engraver?). Gem UNC, among the finest examples in the Adams Collection in terms of strike and preservation, all the flat surfaces bright and lustrous and the struck details contrastingly darker (fairly high level of tungsten content), apparently acquired a few years after publication of Adams-Chao, else it surely would have been the plate piece. Dark AVF with alternating areas of copper and brass color, some surface corrosion and edge-chips, interesting in that the AC plate piece (the only other one known) shows "Saturday" engraved in script on reverse while this one shows "MUNDAY" in block letters, an indicator that these pieces were date markers for "some sort of admission patriotic celebration," according to Adams-Chao, the obverse of both being a crude cast of the same design as AC-CAv1 (or 2). Interestingly, the H in AYACUCHO is over a blundered E. Fully plated with pale gold, some tool marks in the centers and minor residue on the reverse. USA (San Francisco Mint), gold $20 coronet Liberty "double eagle," 1884-S, PCGS AU details / environmental damage / Saddle Ridge Hoard. The Saddle Ridge Hoard was discovered in February of 2013 by a couple walking their property in Northern California. The find consisted of US gold coins, mostly $20 double eagles, buried in eight metal canisters. To this day, very little is known about why this hoard came to be buried; speculation has ranged from a life savings stored away for security to a Wild West robbery. This example from the hoard bears interesting rust staining from its time underground in the metal cans. Still, a substantial amount of the coin shows the lustrous, high AU details one would expect from the hoard. From the "Saddle Ridge Hoard" (stated on label), housed in a special promotional wooden box (hinge broken) with booklet, flyer and small certificate, also photographed in a 2014 Coin World article about the hoard. USA (San Francisco Mint), gold $10 coronet Liberty "eagle," 1882-S, PCGS MS63 / Saddle Ridge Hoard, finest known in PCGS census. A stunning piece from the Saddle Ridge Hoard (see the prior lot for a writeup on the find) with satiny luster all throughout and exceptional strike detail, a few spots of rich orange toning. Frankly, this piece is conservatively graded in our opinion. This is the finest of just two examples found in the hoard (the other graded XF45). This is the only example of the 1892-S $10 gold piece found in the Saddle Ridge Hoard (see lot 1213 for a writeup on the find). And what a beauty it is - this coin looks like it just left the San Francisco Mint! Sharply detailed piece with very lustrous surfaces which show little in the way of contact marks, suggesting a higher grade. USA (San Francisco Assay Office), gold $10, 1852, NGC AU 58.
USA (San Francisco Assay Office), gold $10, 1852, NGC AU 58. K-12a, R.4. Prior to the San Francisco Mint opening in 1854, the government sought to provide some official coinage out west in the midst of the California Gold Rush. A newly formed United States Assay Office of Gold, managed by Joseph R. Curtis, Philo H. Perry, and Samuel H. Ward, all formerly of Moffat & Co., proved to be the solution. They, along with Augustus Humbert as United States Assayer, promptly got to work. California gold was reconstituted into $10 and $20 gold pieces in 1852 and 1853; $50 slugs were struck in 1852 exclusively. In late 1853, with the San Francisco Mint opening soon, the United States Assay Office shut down. This piece, a relic of the California Gold Rush, shows the lightest of handling on the high points with lustrous fields covered in abundantly rich toned gold. CPG value (in AU 58): $13,800. The rim damage mentioned on the label is not readily apparent--we can only make out a rim mark at 11 o'clock on the reverse--but the copper plug is quite evident near the bottom on the obverse. During the battle, British cannonballs fired at her bounced harmlessly off her white oak hull, leading to her nickname "Old Ironsides." Today, the USS Constitution is the oldest ship still afloat and a source of pride for the United States Navy. Designed by engraver John Reich with a scant mintage of 126 pieces in copper. Smooth brown surfaces with sharply rendered details front and back, plentiful red mint luster across the naval battle scene on the reverse. Please use this link to verify the certification number

USA, large bronze medal, Washington / Declaration of Independence (struck in the 1850s), by Charles Cushing Wright, PCGS SP65, finest known, ex-Adams, Musante Plate, Baker Plate. Musante-GW-181 (this piece); Baker-53 (this piece). 379.9 grams; 91mm. see separate writeup Pedigreed to the John Adams Collection, with prior pedigrees to the Cardinal Collection (Stack's Bowers auction of August 2018, lot 45), Anthony Terranova, and the Charles A. Wharton Collection (Stack's Bowers auction of March 2014, lot 2074), also the plate piece on page 250 of Medallic Washington, Vol 1: 1777-1860 (2016), by Neil Musante, and the plate piece on page 62 of Medallic Portraits of Washington, 2nd ed (1999), by Rulau and Fuld based on the 1885 work of the same name by William Spohn Baker. This highly prized medal is considered the greatest masterpiece of celebrated engraver Charles Cushing Wright, reportedly taking two years to complete (1852 to 1854), just a few years before his death in 1857, and struck in what can only be considered a sample run of ten specimens, nine of which can be traced today. It is a monumental combination of skill and simplicity: The obverse shows a lone, high-relief image of George Washington, after the famous bust sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon in 1785, with Wright’s signature on the truncation, vertically flanked by GEORGE and WASHINGTON and nothing else; while the reverse is an exquisitely detailed scene in perfect perspective of the presentation of the Declaration of Independence, based on the 1818 painting by John Trumbull that hangs in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol and graces the back of our $2 bill, depicting in lifelike detail no less than 47 men associated with the event. This scene, which is often mistakenly described as the signing of the Declaration, shows the five-man drafting committee consisting of John Adams, Richard Sherman, Robert R. Livingston, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin presenting their draft to a seated John Hancock and the Continental Congress inside Independence Hall in Philadelphia on June 28, 1776. Each man pictured was a real person, 42 of whom were actual signers of the Declaration (fourteen signers were not depicted, as Trumbull could not find accurate likenesses of them), the remaining five being luminaries who were present for the debates but not for the signing. The scenario itself is a fantasy, as these 47 men were never all together in Independence Hall. It is a testament to Wright’s skill how well he converted the massive 12’ x 18’ painting to a 91mm medal format, the depth of perspective and finely detailed portraits faithfully rendered down to minute detail, even showing the right foot of the preternaturally tall Jefferson almost stepping on the left foot of the comparatively short Adams, once believed to have been symbolic of their legendary post-Independence rivalry. Above the scene is DECLARATION / OF and below is INDEPENDENCE and the date of the signing, July 4, 1776.
It must have been heartbreaking, then, when Wright no doubt noticed a die-crack developing right in the middle of his pictorial tour de force, likely the reason for its extremely limited production. It is manifest as a raised diagonal line running from the flags at top left to the book in front of Hancock at bottom right. While the present specimen clearly shows this die-crack, it is interesting to note that a silver medal with the same reverse that we sold for a record price in Sedwick Auction 32 does not.
In any case, it seems the first public offering of this bronze medal was in Norton’s Literary Letter in 1857, followed a few years later by its first auction appearance in the February 1859 sale of the Henry Bogert Collection by Augustus B. Sage, who asserted it was “the finest medal ever cut in this country.” Clearly this medal was treasured from the beginning, always selling for strong prices at auction. All nine examples known today (confidential list available upon request) found prestigious homes over the next several decades, leading to long and distinguished pedigrees and in several cases permanent residence in public institutions. Famous numismatic names like Norweb and F.C.C. Boyd are on this list, but several significant others, like Garrett and Brand, are not. The present specimen, arguably the finest of all, can be traced back to the Charles A. Wharton Collection, sold by Stack’s Bowers in March 2014; its latest home was in the much-esteemed collection of John Adams.
Here is why we think it is the finest, apart from the circumstantial fact that it was chosen for the plate piece in both standard references (Musante and the Baker reprint by Rulau and Fuld) and achieved a record price the last time it sold in 2018 (that price superseded by a lesser piece in 2022): Its entire surface is practically pristine, all in the loveliest reddish chocolate brown, uninterrupted in shade and satin smoothness, with hardly a bare-eye blemish to note, its only departure from perfection being a faint rub on the highest part of the hair and no more than four or five very light carbon spots and tiny marks, remarkably without a single ding or nick in the vulnerable rims (amazing for such a big slab of copper), clearly indicative of pampered and loving custody for its entire 170-year existence. The fact that it is the single-finest SP65 above two SP64’s and one SP63 at PCGS—with none at NGC—is also no trivial matter.

James Andrew Ring is confirmed as being on the roster as the Paymaster of the USS Iowa during her service off Puerto Rico and Cuba; the battleship USS Iowa fought in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba and was later the quarters for Spanish admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete. Interestingly enough, when Admiral Cervera was in need of extra clothes, it was Paymaster Ring who gave up some of his, as he was the same size as the Spanish admiral. Exceptional example of this popular decoration awarded to an officer of importance during the war and rarely seen with its original box of issue.

Salt Lake City, Utah, Bingham Canyon & Camp Floyd Rail Road Company, $10 remainder, Jan. 15, 1874, serial 125, payable at the Salt Lake City National Bank of Utah, very rare, PMG VG 10 net. Rust-unl. In 1848, two Mormon settlers, Sanford and Thomas Bingham, discovered rich copper ore in the area now known as Bingham Canyon. However, Brigham Young suggested the two avoid starting a mine there and focus on the Mormon settlements instead. It wasn't until 1863 that mining in Bingham Canyon began in earnest. In 1872, the Bingham Canyon & Camp Floyd Railroad was incorporated; by the following year, the railroad offered daily service from Sandy Station to the many mining operations in the canyon. In early 1874, the railroad began issuing its own "bank notes" which were payable up to 31 days after issuance at the Salt Lake City National Bank of Utah. While lower denominations are occasionally encountered, this $10 note is extremely rare and is possibly the only surviving example of this denomination. The type was unknown to Rust when he published extensive Mormon and Utah Coin and Currency reference book in 1984. Even the massive Eric P. Newman Collection only held a single $10 lithographic proof with green underprint. This remainder is well handled with a repaired tear, edge splits, and minor rust damage noted by PMG. The vignettes, a native American to left and Athena to right, are still readily visible and the red underprint is very bold. This is a key opportunity for any Mormon, Utah, or railroad currency collectors, not to be missed. Pedigreed to the 2007 Heritage Long Beach Currency Auction 448, lot 12271. Pick-22a (Panama), 416a (USA). Extremely rare World War II-era short snorter featuring a Panama "Arias" balboa note taped to a United States series 1935A silver certificate. Short snorters were popular souvenirs created by servicemen throughout the war; notes from the various countries the soldier traveled to would be signed by friends they served with, then taped together into a long chain as a remembrance piece. There are plentiful examples of short snorters from World War II but this is the first we've seen with a Panamanian balboa note, issued for only seven days in Panama, used in the chain. Two signatures are seen on the balboa (one noted with "Halifax" below) while the silver certificate is covered in numerous autographs and notes: SHORT SNORTERS G.H. HAM NATAL, BRAZIL June 21, 1942 on the back and B15 CHAPTER 25APR44 / MIAMI TO PANAMA CANAL ZONE on the front. Both notes are fairly well-circulated VF or so with rust stains on the balboa and a margin piece missing on the silver certificate. Interesting and unique piece of WWII history.

Cuba, Banco Espanol de la Habana, 10 pesos contemporary counterfeit, 7-2-1877, serial 335721, PMG Choice Fine 15. Pick-12x. There appear to be two significant periods of counterfeits from this Havana-based bank: those made in the 1870s and those made in 1898 by the American government using the original printing plates during the Spanish-American War. The lack of finer details and inconsistent ink coloration leads us to believe this is the earlier type. And yet, despite the crudity of the lithograph printing, this note apparently saw significant circulation. A few small pinholes are noted along with a few rust spots but otherwise a presentable and interesting piece of Cuban history. We could only find one other example in lower quality to hit the market in the past ten years. Please use this link to verify the certification number

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Banco Central de la Republica Dominicana, 1 peso oro specimen, no date (1947-55), misaligned doubled and tripled overprint error, ex-ABNCo archives. Bank governor's signature and the bank seal are doubled and misaligned plus a third governor's signature is inverted over the secretary's signature. There are some subtle inking differences between the duplicated overprint and the original, perhaps from an ABNCo test print? Slight overinking error? Tough to say why ABNCo printed this and the following specimen error notes given their possibly unique status. Choice UNC, two POCs. Pedigreed to the American Bank Note Company archives.

London, Great Britain, Bank of England, World War II Operation Bernhard counterfeit 10 pounds, 16-10-1935, block K / 156, serial 59272. Pick-336B; Schwan-Boling-182. Prisoners produced notes in quantity and went so far as to handle and dirty them to simulate circulation. The estimated value of the notes produced ranges from 130 to 300 million pounds. The Nazis had hoped to use these notes to pay spies while also undermining the British economy. With thousands of unused notes on hand towards the end of the war, the Nazis dumped crates of the notes into lakes Toplitz and Grundlsee in Austria. Nice AU note with minor handling around the edges but no folds going into the interior of the note, a few pinholes, small notch along right side (as made) to mark the denomination.

Mexico City, Mexico (Empire), Tesorerias de la Nacion, 1 peso, 5-5-1823, serial 124711, printed on papal bull for circulation in Mexico and Texas. Frampton-16a; Olson-15; Pick-4. While intended to help restore trust in Mexican paper money, the Republican papal bull notes were unpopular due to their large size as well as the general distrust in bank notes. In The Paper Republic: The Struggle for Money, Credit and Independence in the Republic of Texas (2010), author James Bevill notes that the papal bull notes were withdrawn in favor of silver coins to follow. "Although these peculiar notes," Bevill writes, "found little acceptance outside of the soldiers stationed in the missions of Texas, they serve as an important reminder of how closely the Catholic Church and the Mexican government were intertwined in the eyes of early Anglo-American colonists of Texas." This peso note is printed on a papal bull dated 1816 that begins with a brief background on Pope Pius VII's imprisonment by Napoleon from 1809 to 1814. The papal bull then segues into a proclamation where Catholics who donated 2 reales to the Church were allowed to eat meat and eggs during Lent. XF with cut cancellation, nice paper quality with only some minor stains along the bottom margin to note, very boldly printed (both the bank note and papal bull).
