Mexico City, Mexico, 1 real, Charles-Joanna, "Late Series," assayer oG to right, mintmark oM to left (oM-oG), king's name as CHAROLVS, NGC VF 35, very rare. Nesmith-36; Cal-65; S-M5; KM-9. 3.38 grams. Early issue from this assayer, the first assayer of the so-called "Late Series" and the only denomination known to exist with this particular mintmark-assayer combination of oM-oG, all with king's spelling of CHAROLVS, with full legends and interiors on a nicely rounded large planchet, darkly toned, somewhat double-struck on pillars side. Nesmith-unl; Cal-unl; S-M5; KM-9. 3.32 grams. This interesting rarity of the assayer-G mark punched over an inverted G is found only in the 1 real denomination and was unknown to Nesmith (third example we have seen), with nice full legends and interiors, a scratch on the shield not affecting value and a much nicer example than the others we have seen. Pedigreed to the Clyde Hubbard Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage (stated on label). Accompanied by original tag or holder. Please use this link to verify the certification number

Mexico City, Mexico, cob 1 real Royal (galano), Philip III, assayer F (pre-dated period), unique, NGC XF 45. S-M12a; KM-unl; Cal-unl. 3.20 grams. While diminutive compared to the 8 reales Royals, this 1 real example is far rarer and shows more clearly the link to the peninsular origin of galanos. Its dainty crispness of evenly struck details in the full crown and shield and cross, not to mention the nearly full legends, is nearly identical in style to the famous "Ingenio de la Tijera" coinage of Spain (see lot 27 for a Madrid 4 escudos), which was supposed to be a revolutionary systemic improvement in quality and output but ended up being relegated to New World mints only, starting with Mexico City, which we now believe used that special machinery to make only the galanos like this one. The bold oMF and denomination I really stand out against the darkly toned fields, a lovely aspect to be sure, despite a trifle of high-point doubling. Prominent in the legends are diamond-shaped stops, which indicate manufacture around 1605, well into Philip III's reign but also more than a decade before dates were incorporated into the design. Needless to say, this is the first example we have ever seen or heard of, and it can be safely considered the finest Mexican 1 real of the period and far nicer than its 2 reales counterpart (holed VF) from the Rudman Collection sold in 2021, being the only other pre-dated minor Royal known to exist. Mexico City, Mexico, cob 8 reales, 1729 R/D, extremely rare. S-M24; KM-unl (47a for type); Cal-unl. 26.29 grams. The existence of 1729 D has been contentious among researchers (in the absence of any 100% clear examples), as it is known that the changeover from D to R (ironically the same person, Rivas previously acting as assayer on behalf of the Carmelites of the Holy Desert) took place on March 17 of that year, although clear examples of 1729 R/D are already known in 4R and 2R (one each). The present discovery coin shows without doubt a full date and oMR with enough parts of an under-assayer D at the bottom of the R to attribute to R/D. Most of the shield and cross are also visible, with contrasting dark toning in crevices, but the surfaces are lightly corroded as from an unspecified shipwreck (AVF otherwise).

Lima, Peru, cob 1/4 real, Philip II, assayer I to left of castle, rare. S-unl; KM-unl; Cal-unl. 0.78 gram. Recent research by Jorge Proctor ("La inesperada existencia de una aparente marca de ensayador I en ciertas monedas de Lima y la acunacion de 1592" in Boletin Numismatico 112 [2022]) has shown that what we once thought was a mis-struck mintmark P is actually assayer I (boldly visible on this coin) for assayer Jacome Bricanino of 1592 only (this being the only denomination struck), the castle and lion both full and clearly without any other punches to left or right, some legend, toned and oxidized VF.

Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer R (Rincon), very rare. S-P1; KM-5.1; Cal-667. 26.37 grams. The long and eminently collectible Potosi 8R non-Royal cob series has several rarities, but none so significant as the very first issue under assayer Rincon in 1575, populated by perhaps only around a dozen examples struck from two different obverse dies that differ most notably by the legend and style of lion in Brabant: D,G, and Seville-style lion (Paoletti 47, Sellschopp 13) versus DEI,G, and flat lion (Paoletti 48, Sellschopp 12). The present example of the former die shows a full crown and nearly full legends in addition to the choice full shield and cross-lions-castles, with slightly uneven rusty toning over slightly oxidized surfaces, overall VF or better.

Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer C below erasure, rare.
Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer C below erasure, rare. S-P5; KM-5.1; Cal-671. 27.38 grams. Another peak of Potosi cob collecting is this C-under-erasure issue of around 1580, struck by assayer Cristobal Ruiz Vizcayno in a brief interlude between assayer-B tenures. It is uncertain whether the erasure between the mintmark and assayer is a B or a B/L, but in any case this is the only time an assayer effaced his predecessor's mark as opposed to over-striking or starting a fresh die. Of this issue there are two obverse dies known--Paoletti 59, Sellschopp 141; Paoletti 60, Sellschopp 140-- the present coin being the latter, with bold full legends and crown, full but weaker shield and cross, the assayer quite bold but the mintmark and denomination flat, lightly cleaned AXF with a few minor flan-cracks and touch of oxidation at edge.

Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales Royal (galano), 1726 Y, Louis I, very rare, NGC XF details / holed. S-P43b; KM-R35; Cal-45. (Weight not specified.) Just as the Rincon 8R is the pinnacle of the shield-type series (see lot 687), the Louis I 8R Royal is the top trophy of the pillars-and-waves series (not counting the even-rarer Hearts), and this example is a choice one, with bold full details and contrasting toning all over (no doubling), including a complete LVIS PRIMERO in legend, on a broader flan than and clearly superior to Lazaro 307 (a die-match, rated R3), with crude hole at bottom of cross / top of pillars (coin-aligned), arguably the nicest example to hit the market in many years. Potosi, Bolivia, cob 4 reales Heart, 1701 Y, unique, NGC VF 30, finest and only example in NGC censu
Potosi, Bolivia, cob 4 reales Heart, 1701 Y, unique, NGC VF 30, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Rudman, ex-Karon. S-P43; KM-unl; Cal-509. 12.45 grams. Specially struck for religious use (it is believed), the Hearts of Potosi as a group are the most highly prized cobs, and 4 reales Hearts are among the rarest (only the diminutive 1/2R being rarer), with a current confirmed census of just 17 pieces, all but one being different dates. The present example (the only one known for the date) found fame in the Paul Karon collection sold in 1990 and until now has resided in the esteemed Isaac Rudman collection. Like many Hearts, the flan "leans" from center, but with desirable medallic alignment, with small square hole in the stem at top for customary use as a pendant, slightly low in weight as a natural aspect of the type. Also, like most Hearts, this piece does not have complete legends, but it does show all the inner details with lovely contrasting toning, a true trophy of an extremely rare type. Pedigreed to the Isaac Rudman Coin Cabinet (stated on label) and to the Paul Karon Collection (Ponterio Auction of March 1990, lot 386). Please use this link to verify the certification number
