Cal-882; Fr-159. 13.46 grams. see separate writeup Please use this link to verify the certification number One of Philip II's many reforms in the 1500s was to move the Spanish Court from its traditional royal seat in Toledo to the city of Madrid, where it remains today. That included creating a new mint in Madrid where none had existed before. Naturally, Philip was eager to start minting coins there, but only if they could be made of superior quality. Perfect, machine-struck coinage was already being struck at the Segovia mint starting in 1586 using what was known as “Real Ingenio" (“royal machine”). In Madrid, however, the king opted for a different minting experiment known as "Ingenio de la Tijera" (“shearing machine”), which had been developed by the royal blacksmith and knifemaker Miguel de la Cerda, on recommendation by the Third Count of Chinchón, Diego Fernández de Cabrera y Bobadilla. Miguel de la Cerda’s invention consisted of a special method of pouring silver or gold into perfectly round solid cylinders matching the diameter of the coin dies, with each planchet hand-cut from one end with special scissors, so that no further trimming or flattening was needed. This was meant to save time and resources, while producing attractive coins with full and even details, a far cry from what was eventually produced in earnest at the Madrid Mint starting in 1614. The experiment was first tried at the Segovia and Toledo Mints in 1589-91, but since Madrid was the preferred destination, silver and gold were brought from Toledo to Madrid to carry out the experiment there as well in 1591. Since there was no mint, the workshop of the famous but recently deceased sculptor, engraver and medallist for the king, Jacome Trezzo (also known as “Jacometrezo”) was chosen for the striking in Madrid. Ultimately, however, it was not possible to continue to strike the larger-denomination coins due to lower river current to run the water mills. The highest denomination—and rarest—was the 4 escudos, as it seems no 8 escudos were even attempted, although the silver 8 reales (Cal-660) is known, the only extant example of which hammered in March 2021 by Aureo & Calicó for about $21,500. The Madrid 4 escudos of this type all bear a mintmark M for Madrid to the left of the shield and the initial C for assayer Melchor Rodríguez del Castillo to the right below the denomination o-IIII, with the date 1591 at the 11 o’clock position in the reverse-side legend. Only three are known, the present specimen being the highest graded and arguably the finest of the three. It shows incomparably fine inner details and nearly full legends (the 1591 date particularly bold), practically no doubling (just a little on the assayer-mark), and lovely luster throughout. As expected, the flan is almost perfectly round and extends beyond the outer border design in places. For the next few years, de la Cerda was secretive about his invention, and little or nothing is recorded until a second experiment at the Seville Mint in 1597. The next year, 1598, de la Cerda died and passed the rights for his invention to his trustee, Dr. Baltasar Vellorino, who asserted that he was the one who had improved de la Cerda’s design to make 4’s and 8’s possible. Vellorino quickly pushed for a new agreement with King Philip II to implement the invention in his own name and receive 50 percent of the profits for twelve years; but the caveat was that invention would be used only at New World mints, starting with Mexico City. One month later, the King died and the crown passed to his son, Philip III. The equipment was not shipped to Mexico until 1602, well into the reign of Philip III. Vellorino himself left for Mexico in 1603 and the machinery was all in place by the end of 1606, according to an early 1607 document. Back in Spain, a similar experiment by Segovia’s famous tallador Diego de Astor took place in 1610 at the Segovia Mint and in 1611 in Madrid (again at the studios of Jacome Trezzo). The experiment lost favor, however, and it was claimed in court that the new method was slower than promised and would effectively cause raw silver and gold to bypass Spain and go straight to Asia (Philippines, China and Japan) without benefit to mainland Spain. Researcher Jorge Proctor points out that these dates line up more or less with the first appearance of Mexican Royals (galanos), which were perfectly round and match what the new equipment would have produced (see lot 560 in this auction for an example). Apart from these galanos, there is no evidence this invention was ever fully implemented in the New World. The “Ingenio de la Tijera” coins from Spain are therefore very important to the evolution of the long numismatic history of Spain and its American colonies. This opportunity to acquire what we believe is the finest example of the highest denomination from Madrid is unique and not to be missed. For reference, two Spanish journal articles summarize and discuss the documentation: “Dos experimentos acuñadores en Madrid: las pruebas de Miguel de la Cerda y Diego de Astor en las casas de Jacome Trezzo,” by Rosa Romero Molina, in issue 233 (July-December 1993) of NVMISMA (Sociedad Iberoamericana de Estudios Numismáticos) “El Proyecto de implantación del Ingenio de la Tijera en las cecas de los Reinos de las Indias,” by Pedro Damián Cano Borrego, in issue 9 (2022) of Revista Numismática Hécate

Fascinating coin, lightly toned on fields, with mostly bold full shield and cross and much legend including bold full date that is listed as clean 1701 on the NGC label (our own die-study work to be published in the near future proves that it was made from a 1700 die), as well as more obverse legend than has been seen on any other example, including a bold (PHILIPP)VS V. D. G. V.A lightly punched over (CAROL)OS DG V.A, but perhaps the most interesting aspect is that the reverse-side legend reads R . M with the 7 of the date punched over an upside-down 7! Cut gold bar endpiece, 129 grams, marked with fineness XIX-dot (19-1/4K), ex-"Golden Fleece Wreck" (ca. 1550). About 2" x 1" x 3/8". A neat little "thumb" of gold with bright and lustrous surfaces, the cut end with clean chisel and break, the rounded (uncut) end with bold full fineness in bordered boxes (one with XIX and the other with a dot) at the very tip, small enough to be used as a form of coinage in its time (since no gold coins were being produced in the colonies) but big enough to still have the flavor of a "finger bar" ingot. From the "Golden Fleece Wreck" (ca. 1550), with certificate.
Maravillas Gold bar, 336.3 grams, fineness XIX-dot 19-1/4K foundry/assayer RIBERA NGC Mega Holder
Complete Colombian gold bar, 336.3 grams, marked with fineness XIX-dot (19-1/4K), foundry/assayer RIBERA / ZARAGOZA, and partial circular tax stamps, NGC Genuine / Maravillas, ex-Christie's (1992), ex-Elsen (2008). About 6-3/4" x 1" x 1/4", the slab itself 10-1/2" x 8-1/4" x 1-1/4" and 1532 grams total. The ultimate shipwreck bar: An extremely well-marked complete gold ingot from a highly desirable and well-known shipwreck, fittingly honored to be the first and only such item to be certified and encapsulated by NGC in what they call a "mega holder" #6706234-001. The top of the bar shows three clear fineness markings consisting of XIX inside a box next to a dot (the symbol for a quarter karat) inside a separate box, the fineness also lightly incised into the surface prior to stamping (an aspect we have seen on other gold bars); parts of four circular tax stamps showing different parts of a typical Philip IV legend (as on the coins); and--best of all--a complete foundry/assayer cartouche with RIBERA / ZARAGOZA inside one box, clearly referring to the Zaragoza municipality and gold-producing region in Colombia; with small piece broken off one end where the assay was done in the 1650s. All of the markings show at least some white-coral encrustation, as do parts of the back of the bar, which also shows curious raised lines that match up with the positions of the stamps on front (similar to what is seen on later countermarked coins). Among the many shipwreck gold bars we have sold over the years, this is the only one we have auctioned from the Maravillas (only 15 of which were originally sold by Christie's in 1992). From the Maravillas (1656), with Sedwick photo-certificate #000101, pedigreed to the original Christie's (London) Maravillas auction of May 1992 (lot 139), a copy of the catalog for which also accompanies this lot, also pedigreed to the Jean Elsen (Belgium) auction 97 of September 2008 (lot 1129). Gold "tejo" ingot, 307 grams, tested at 0.970 fine gold (23.28K), marked with V-over-upside-down-V monogram and serial number XXXXII, ex-Luz (1752), ex-Sotheby's (plated on cover). Roughly 3" x 2-1/2" and 1/8" thick. One of the smaller ingots known as "tejos" among the (only) 40 sold by Sotheby's in 1993, and one of just 19 with neatly engraved V-over-upside-down-V monogram representing an unknown owner or shipper (possibly related to Jesuit missions), also with unique serial number 42 (XXXXII) boldly incised into the surface, and uniquely naturally shaped (however the gold flowed and cooled when poured flat without constraint), this fascinating piece is particularly desirable as having been chosen for an iconic "group photo" on the cover of the 1993 catalog, now finally re-entering the market after some time in South America and some unfortunate test-cutting and hammering near one edge plus further test pits on back. Fits in the palm of your hand! From the Luz (1752), pedigreed to Sotheby's Uruguayan Treasure of the River Plate auction of March 1993 (lot 526) with copy of Sotheby's catalog, the cover of which shows this ingot, and with a spiral-bound pamphlet about the wreck and the ingot (in Spanish and English).
Nanking Cargo China "sycee" gold ingot 53, 369 grams, 21K fine ex-Christie's (1986)
Chinese rectangular "sycee" gold ingot number 53, 369 grams, 21K fine, marked with Chinese characters "yuan ji bao" ("gold ingot") on top along with "yuan" on bottom, ex-"Nanking Cargo" (1752), ex-Christie's (1986). About 3-1/8" x 1" x 1/2". Perhaps the most elusive of all shipwreck ingots despite the Christie's offering of over 126 of them on this wreck (among 147 listed on the original manifest of the Geldermalsen), the Chinese shoe-shaped "sycees" in gold are extremely rare, their existence nearly wiped out by meltage over the years, somewhat ironic since their original composition is melted-down foreign gold coins from their time, as the Chinese always preferred copper for daily exchange and used the gold only for large gifts or overseas payments, hence the need to store the gold in a compact and uniform state. Curiously, Christie's notes that the gold ingots from this wreck were not in the main cargo but a bit separated from it yet found all together, as if they were in the possession of a single passenger trying to get away! Like almost all the others, our bar bears on its lustrous top surface a central "double-gourd"-shaped cartouche with the Chinese letters "yuan ji" plus two peripheral square cartouches (one at each end) containing the Chinese letter "bao," one covered with white encrustation, the sides of the ingot narrowly sloping upward with brownish encrustation embedded, and the bottom with two lightly stamped Chinese characters "yuan" (one at each end), overall in superb (undamaged) condition and a lovely little display with great original auction packaging. From the "Nanking Cargo" (1752), with sticker #53, housed in a Christie's "Nanking Cargo" wooden box also marked with #53, with photo-certificate, pedigreed to the original Christie's (Amsterdam) auction of April-May 1986 (pp. 70-76), a hardbound copy of the catalog for which also accompanies this lot (with list of prices realized).

A very neatly cast "half brick" of relatively high-grade silver (XRF tested at about 90% silver, despite its marked fineness of about 82%), with wavy top surface but fairly smooth bottom exhibiting all the markings (circular tax stamp with LVS visible, serial and assayer in separate boxes above fineness in small characters inside four boxes), neatly chiseled diagonal "assayer's bite" in one corner, lightly toned and with a minimum of surface corrosion, in short a very desirable size and quality for this popular earliest-known Spanish colonial wreck. From the "Tumbaga Wreck" (ca. 1528), with original Daniel Frank Sedwick photo-certificate and Armstrong book Tumbaga Silver for Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire (1993).

Silver "barreton" ingot 934, 15 lb 0.48 oz troy, Class Factor 0.6, marked with fineness IIUCCCLXXX (2380/2400), ex-Atocha (1622). 13-3/4" long, 2-1/2" wide, 1-1/4" tall. Beautifully toned all over, with particularly bold and clear fineness in six boxes and three fairly explicit circular tax stamps showing various parts of D.G. HISPANIARVM (just like on the coins), but apparently made without any manifest number, owner/shipper marks or date/foundry/assayer cartouches (hence the low Class Factor), as the surfaces are only minimally corroded, although the bottom does bear a mysterious crudely engraved W in addition to the usual Fisher number (A85 / 934), with two "assayer bites" in corners. From the Atocha (1622), with original Fisher photo-certificate 85A-S934.

Perfectly rectangular in cross-section as neatly cast, with very bold A over VOC monogram and assayer-mark in incuse shield near top end, the other end typically chiseled to fine-tune the weight but lacking the typical cavity, nicely toned and almost completely lacking corrosion. From the Rooswijk (1739), with certificate from the salvors.

Zacatecas, Mexico, cap-and-rays 8 reales, 1835 OM, NGC shipwreck effect / SB Pulaski, very rare provenance. DP-Zs15; KM-377.13. This is the first item we have ever offered from this wreck, discovered and salvaged in 2018. The steam packet Pulaski, carrying 187 passengers and crew, left the port of Charleston, South Carolina on June 14, 1838, bound for Baltimore, Maryland. Around 11 PM that night, off the coast of North Carolina, the starboard boiler exploded. Some were killed in the blast, others were lost as the ship quickly went down; around 59 survivors were saved. Unlike the other larger US shipwreck recoveries, where big quantities of coins from commercial shipments were recovered, coins from the Steamboat Pulaski were wholly passenger and crew "pocket change." The find uncovered Mint State US gold coins, a number of US silver coins (mostly half dollars), and many foreign coins that were US legal tender at the time, like this one. Although no census has been published for the total recovery, the scarcity of Pulaski coins on the market suggests that it ranks among the top in terms of rarity of US shipwreck coin finds and is also one of the earliest US wrecks to be salvaged. This is apparently the only Zacatecas-mint cap-and-rays 8 reales recovered from the wreck. Though minor saltwater corrosion precludes any adjectival grade by NGC, the sharpness of details and significant luster on the reverse suggest an About Uncirculated grade in our opinion. Recovered from: S.B. Pulaski, sunk in 1838 off North Carolina Please use this link to verify the certification number

USA (Philadelphia mint), Capped Bust half dollar, 1828, NGC Shipwreck Effect / SS New York. Our first time offering this design from the SS New York. Like the prior lot, the coins recovered from the SS New York were held by passengers and crew members aboard. Though the saltwater corrosion is readily apparent, ample detail remains with a bold date, complete eagle, and even LIBERTY fully visible; the quality of this piece is above average for coins from the SS New York. USA (San Francisco Mint), gold $20 Coronet Liberty "double eagle," 1857-S, bold 7, faint S, PCGS UNC details / environmental damage, with pinch of gold. Mint State double eagle with sharp details and bright surfaces save for a patch of matte staining from its time spent underwater. Though the 1857-S is the most prevalent date among double eagles from the SS Central America, its number of die varieties (at least eight significant types) allow for variation when collecting. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. USA (Philadelphia Mint), gold $10 Coronet Liberty "eagle," 1840, PCGS AU 55, with pinch of gold, only example recovered from the wreck, Bowers-Manley Plate. Not only is this the only 1840 eagle recovered from the "Ship of Gold," it's also the earliest date among the small group of $10 pieces found. Accordingly, this coin is the plate piece for the type in America's Greatest Treasure Ship: The SS Central America, The Second Treasure-Finding Journey by Q. David Bowers and Dwight Manley. The pale gold surfaces bear light circulation friction for its grade while both sides possess sharp design definition from its high-quality striking. The eagle's shield retains an orange-golden hue from toning. Plated on page 148 of America's Greatest Treasure Ship: The SS Central America, The Second Treasure-Finding Journey by Q. David Bowers and Dwight Manley (2019). Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. USA (Philadelphia Mint), gold $5 Classic Liberty "half eagle," 1834, plain 4, PCGS XF 45, with pinch of gold. First year of the "Classic Head" design by Philadelphia Mint's Chief Engraver William Kneass in response to the Act of June 28, 1834, which reduced the weight and composition of gold coinage. Also, this is the earliest date among half eagles found on the SS Central America. Circulation wear on the high points yet with plentiful detail throughout, pale gold surfaces as is typical with gold coins from the wreck. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. USA (San Francisco Mint), gold $3 Indian Princess, 1856-S, PCGS XF 45, with pinch of gold. A popular and rare denomination in all regards, let alone from the SS Central America! This $3 piece saw minor circulation in the months preceding the wreck, though the outer legends and wreath retain sharp details. Its pale golden fields retain plenty of luster. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. One of just five examples of this type recovered during the 2014 Expedition to the SS Central America. Fairly circulated yet retaining ample detail in Liberty's hair curls and across the eagle, with rich and bright golden surfaces all over. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. USA (Philadelphia Mint), gold $1 Coronet Liberty, 1853, PCGS MS 61, with pinch of gold. A pleasing gold dollar with wholly original surfaces and luster despite its 157 years underwater; hints of pink gold toning around the design. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. USA (San Francisco Mint), 25 cents Seated Liberty, 1856-S/S, large S over small S, PCGS VF 25, with pinch of gold. Briggs-4-E; FS-501. Only six examples of this rare die variety were recovered from the SS Central America during the 2014 expedition (of an overall 35-50 surviving pieces with this variety estimated by Briggs, shipwreck or not). This die error occurred when a Mint employee accidentally used an S mintmark punch made for a dime, then "corrected" the error by repunching with the quarter-sized mintmark. This example evidently saw some circulation prior to sinking, although many details, particularly across the eagle, are quite sharp. The surfaces, untouched by saltwater corrosion, are quite silvery, with only a hint of brown toning across Liberty. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box. Recovered from: S.S. Central America, sunk in 1857 in deep water off North Carolina Please use this link to verify the certification number
USA (New Orleans Mint), 10 cents Seated Liberty, 1856-O, PCGS AU 55, with pinch of gold.
USA (New Orleans Mint), 10 cents Seated Liberty, 1856-O, PCGS AU 55, with pinch of gold. Unlike the two preceding denominations, almost all dimes from the 2014 SS Central America Expedition came from the Philadelphia or New Orleans Mints. Only a single San Francisco-minted dime was recovered, due to a comparatively small mintage (70,000) in 1856, the first year of production at the San Francisco Mint, and none in 1857. This New Orleans-struck dime shows off little in the way of circulation wear and at first glance appears Mint State; its surfaces are lustrous and silvery with faint umber toning around the stars. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box (corners slightly bruised). USA (Philadelphia Mint), round California gold 50 cents token, 1853, PCGS AU 58, with pinch of gold. BG-430. What coin type can be more iconic coming from the Ship of Gold than an example of the privately-minted California gold tokens that came about due to the Gold Rush? The 2014 Expedition recovered just over a hundred pieces of California gold tokens; this piece is one of just five for the type recovered from the SS Central America. Substantially lustrous, particularly seen on the reverse, with only minor surface friction to indicate any circulation. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. USA (Philadelphia Mint), gold octagonal 1/4 dollar token, 1856, PCGS MS 63+ Prooflike, with pinch of gold. BG-111. A spectacular prooflike example of a California gold token in a popular and unusual octagonal shape, looking just like the day it was made! Only 17 examples of this BG-111 type were recovered during the 2014 SS Central America Expedition; of that number, 14 were designated by PCGS as prooflike and all were graded Mint State, indicating some hoarding and lack of circulation amongst these later California gold types. The proof fields of this coin contrast with a slight frostiness to the design, and the surfaces have an even, buttery golden color. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. Great Britain (London, England), gold sovereign, Victoria (young head), 1854, WW incuse, PCGS AU detail / scratch, with pinch of gold. Sp-3852D; KM-736.1; Fr-387e. Of the 82 foreign gold coins found aboard the SS Central America, exactly half came from Great Britain, indicating the close commerce ties between the two countries in the 1850s. This sovereign would have been legal tender in the United States in 1857, but only through February 21 of that year, when the passage of the Coinage Act of 1857 put a stop to foreign coins in circulation. These coins still contained good gold though, so merchants and gold speculators could hoard them until they had a chance to convert them to US gold coins. This sovereign has almost Mint State details with just some minor friction and a light obverse scratch to denote the grade, some patchy tan staining covering much of its otherwise lustrous surfaces. Framed set of three Andrea Doria banknotes with certificate: USA series 1935E silver certificate; It
Framed set of three Andrea Doria banknotes with certificate: USA series 1935E silver certificate; Italian 1,000 and 100 lira. After Gimbel's recovery of the Andrea Doria safe in 1981, its contents of Italian lire and US silver certificates were professionally conserved and made available for sale. However, a select group of notes were assembled into unique framed sets and were given to universities and museums for display. Over the years, a few of these rare sets have entered the market; this is the first example we have handled. This framed set consists of (from top to bottom): a US $1 silver certificate, series 1935E, serial U92216834H; an Italian 100 lire, 14-8-1947, serial N165 017090; and an Italian 100 lire, date and serial number not visible (presumed 1947-dated). The silver certificate and 1000 lire are high grade and have only minimal edge damage and staining; the 100 lire is fairly seaworn. Additional shipping costs will apply to this item; please contact us in advance for a shipping quote. With The Doria Project certificate mounted on the back of the frame.
