San Jose, Costa Rica, Banco Internacional, 10 colones front printer's model, 30-3-1927, series B, PM
San Jose, Costa Rica, Banco Internacional, 10 colones front printer's model, 30-3-1927, series B, PMG Choice UNC 64, unique. SCWPM-189Bpm1. Incredible and unique hand-crafted printer's model of a concept design for the Banco Internacional de Costa Rica's 10 colones in 1927; this design, with variations in perspective and coloration from this concept art, was later produced in 1929 though the vast majority of that limited print run was provisionally overprinted in 1937 and 1938 (SCWPM-189B, then 199 with the provisional overprint). Close inspection shows every detail has been carefully aligned and pasted together to represent the bank note. Then, an artist hand colored and shaded the central design, denominators, and bank title highlights - from vivid blue tones around the borders to the pale green and earthy hues of the Costa Rican coffee plantation scene. Even the leaves and beans in the coffee trees were intricately painted, lending itself to a 3-D effect. The careful production put into this printer's model truly highlights the concept of bank notes being works of art. We can only note a small tear in the upper top margin. As this design was modified and produced in low numbers with almost all overprinted, this concept model remains the only means to own this specific bank note design; it is mounted in a thick, heavy cardstock frame with Thomas de la Rue's stamp on the back. San Jose, Costa Rica, Banco Internacional, 5 colones front printer's model, 30-3-1927, series B, PMG Choice UNC 64, unique. SCWPM-189Apm1. As if the artistry for the 10 colones printer's model (as lot 95) could be topped, the gorgeous, hand-painted pink and blue hues across this unique 5 colones printer's model are particularly appealing. Every detail - borders, denominators, vignette, bank title - was carefully pasted to reflect the bank note's concept. The artist paid particular attention to the coloration and shading of the central vignette depicting bananas being loaded aboard train cars with a distant mountain visible in the background - a wholly Costa Rican scene. This design, with variations in perspective and coloration from this concept art, was later produced in 1929 though the vast majority of that limited print run was provisionally overprinted in 1937 and 1938 (SCWPM-189A, then 198 with the provisional overprint). Turkey, 50 kurus, 1930, series A5, serial 195882, PMG Choice VF 35, ex-SS City of Roubaix shipwreck (1941). SCWPM-133. In 1940, the Turkish government contracted Bradbury Wilkinson to print new 50 kurus with President Inonu's portrait. This shipment, along with new 100-lira notes printed by Thomas de la Rue, were then shipped to Turkey aboard the SS City of Roubaix. On April 6, 1941, the vessel was docked in the harbor of Piraeus, Greece, when German intelligence notified the Luftwaffe that a British ship, the SS Clan Fraser, was unloading weapons and explosives in the same harbor. German bombers were scrambled and commenced a bombing run on the target. The SS City of Roubaix had the misfortune of being docked alongside the SS Clan Fraser. Both vessels were bombed, caught fire, and sank. Shortly thereafter, the 50 kurus and 100 lira from the SS City of Roubaix began to float ashore, their shipping crates breached during the attack. Many notes were recovered by Greeks who then traveled to Turkey to spend them. As such, both denominations entered circulation unofficially, forcing the Turkish government to annul them and print a new version (SCWPM-134). Modestly circulated note with light staining around the edges, one of the few available examples of shipwreck paper money. From: S.S. City of Roubaix, sunk in 1941 off Piraeus, Greece.
