Transverse slice of large copper ingot number 76, 195 grams, ex-Atocha (1622).
Transverse slice of large copper ingot number 76, 195 grams, ex-Atocha (1622). 8½" long x 1¾" wide. Perfect for display, this neat slice of a copper ingot from the wreck shows off all the voids and streaks found inside these crudely poured yet apparently high-fineness bars (XRF: 99.6% copper). The outer edges are uncleaned and crusty as found while the inner copper is bright red, illustrating how the corroded and unremarkable complete ingots from this famous shipwreck actually contain high-grade copper inside. From the Atocha (1622), with original Fisher photo-certificate 85A-C103603.

FRENCH COLONIES, mint uncertain, billon 2 sols (24 deniers), Louis XV, 1743, encrusted as found, rare provenance. Vlack-22; Gad-281; KM-500.29. 2.33 grams total. The Vlack reference states: "Specimens examined indicate they were part of a hoard recovered from the French frigate, St Geran, that sunk during a gale when it struck shoals en route to the Île de France (Mauritius) on August 17, 1744." The story of the St. Geran's sinking includes the tragic death of a young French lady traveling back from France to idyllic Mauritius (then known as Île de France) along with her betrothed, a crew member, her death ostensibly due to a prudish refusal to remove her clothing to keep from drowning, tragically choosing modesty over survival. In 1788 this anecdote became the core of the best-selling novel Paul et Virginie, by the French author Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, which also extolled the virtues of living harmoniously on an island without the constraints of social class divisions. A bit corroded yet with much of the legends quite legible, encrusted with verdigris and sedimentation. With old tag describing a shell fragment in the encrustation as "apparently a pc. of TOOTH." Recovered from: St. Geran, sunk in 1744 off Mauritius in the Indian Ocean

TURKEY, Central Bank, 50 kurus, 1930, series A24, serial 325703, PMG Choice VF 35.
TURKEY, Central Bank, 50 kurus, 1930, series A24, serial 325703, PMG Choice VF 35. Pick-133. In 1940, the Turkish government contracted Bradbury Wilkinson to print new 50 kurus with President Inonu's portrait. This shipment, along with new 100-lira notes printed by Thomas de la Rue, were then shipped to Turkey aboard the SS City of Roubaix. On April 6, 1941, the vessel was docked in the harbor of Piraeus, Greece, when German intelligence notified the Luftwaffe that a British ship, the SS Clan Fraser, was unloading weapons and explosives in the same harbor. German bombers were scrambled and commenced a bombing run on the target. The SS City of Roubaix had the misfortune of being docked alongside the SS Clan Fraser. Both vessels were bombed, caught fire, and sank. Shortly thereafter, the 50 kurus and 100 lira from the SS City of Roubaix began to float ashore, their shipping crates breached during the attack. Many notes were recovered by Greeks who then traveled to Turkey to spend them. As such, both denominations entered circulation unofficially, forcing the Turkish government to annul them and print a new version (Pick-134). Modestly circulated note with light staining around the edges, one of the few available examples of shipwreck paper money. Recovered from: S.S. City of Roubaix, sunk in 1941 off Piraeus, Greece Please use this link to verify the certification number

Bottom half of an ancient clay pot, ex-Colossus (1798). 117 grams. 2½" tall x 3½" wide. SAINT EUSTATIUS (British), unknown denomination, raised SE inside incuse circle (1809) countermark on an unidentified thick copper coin with additional countermark inside incuse box on reverse, possibly rare. KM-1.2 for type. 9.55 grams. Interesting piece with clear raised SE in an incuse circle countermark on a thick unidentified copper flan that weighs almost 10 grams, much more than the normal hosts for this type. On the reverse, there is a second countermark of an incuse box with obscured lettering in it, possibly a NEVIS countermark of 1801. Fairly bold VF SE countermark on a dark, well-worn host with a little surface pitting, possibly important for the Caribbean specialist but here sold "as is" in any case. With old collector tag.
