COLOMBIA (formerly Venezuela), large silver medal, dated 1828 (struck 1829), Bolívar saved from assassination, rare. Urdaneta Braschi-I.A.12. 43.97 grams. 44 mm. Obverse with bust of Bolívar right atop a pedestal; reverse with all-seeing eye within radiant pyramid above L.D.P. / SALVO LA VIDA / DEL LIBERTADOR / SIMON BOLIVAR / LA NOCHE DEL 25. DE SEP. / DE 1828; smooth edge with loop at top. Rare and historically important medal commemorating the failed assassination attempt against Simón Bolívar on the night of September 25, 1828, the event from which the medal derives its familiar nickname, the “Septembrina.” Reportedly two examples were struck in gold and ten originally in silver, although perhaps ten to fifteen additional silver examples are now believed to exist. Long attributed to Venezuela, the medal was reassigned to Colombian manufacture following research presented by Carlos Bacalao at the 2019 NUMISCOL convention in Bogotá, including evidence that the original dies are preserved in the Museo Nacional in Bogotá. Recent research, with further articles forthcoming, also links the initials L.D.P. to a Masonic lodge, an interpretation reinforced by the all seeing eye within a radiant pyramid, rather than the traditional explanations of “La Divina Providencia” or Bolívar’s aide L.D. Palacios. Nicely toned AU with rich red and golden hues in the center ceding to dark blue around the rim on obverse, lustrous reverse with minor hairlines, the loop for suspension lightly soldered to the top.

PERU, Republic (pre-confederation), silver uniface military award medal, no date (late 1830s), RESTA
PERU, Republic (pre-confederation), silver uniface military award medal, no date (late 1830s), RESTAURADOR DE LA PATRIA, Felipe Santiago Salaverry, issued for the Callao uprising of 1835, extremely rare. Medina (Medallas Chilenas)-36 (p. 116, Plate IV, 5), misattributed to Chile. Hexagonal striated field within laurel wreath and elaborate six-pointed frame, legend RESTAURADOR DE LA PATRIA, fortress above, inkwell with two plumes at lower left, and armored hand holding sword at lower right; integral suspension loop above. This is an important military decoration from the critical political and military transition immediately preceding the establishment of the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, issued during the brief government of Felipe Santiago Salaverry and associated with the pronouncement of the Callao garrison on February 23, 1835. Medina tentatively attributed this type to the Chilean capture of Valdivia based on stylistic similarities (his example fully round, not cut to the design like this one is), while Alejandro Rosa later identified it as a Peruvian award granted by Salaverry to the troops of the Callao fortresses. Extremely rare, with only about four or five examples known in silver and two examples known in gold. Mint State with sharply struck details, very deeply toned with blue hues about the dark gray field, mint luster in center, minor hairlines, holed at top for suspension, the blank reverse quite lustrous and lightly toned in the center with dark blue around the edge. A choice example of a key historical medal.

SPANISH COLONIAL, uniface silver military medal with oval hanger, Ferdinand VII, no date (ca. 1808-1
SPANISH COLONIAL, uniface silver military medal with oval hanger, Ferdinand VII, no date (ca. 1808-1820s), Premio del Valor, extremely rare. Medina (Medallas coloniales hispano americanas)-14. 40.83 grams. 46 mm. For the serious collector of Latin American military decorations, this is an exceptional and historically important royalist Medal for Valor bearing the uniformed bust of Ferdinand VII facing right between PREMIO to left and DEL VALOR to right, uniface and made for suspension. Choice AU grade with lovely rainbow toning over luster and hairlines from old cleaning. This type was misidentified as a Bolívar decoration in the February 1911 Jacques Schulman sale of the Oscar Salbach Collection, where lot 1555 was described as a gold medal with the bust of Bolívar and PREMIO DEL VALOR. Another example in silver was listed elsewhere in the same sale, showing that the type was made in both metals. This erroneous Bolívar attribution was later repeated in 1932 by Harrold E. Gillingham in his book South American Decorations and War Medals (p. 55). José Toribio Medina, however, had already correctly identified the type in 1919 as bearing the bust of Ferdinand VII in a detailed description matching this piece, including the uniface format and suspension ring. Even Medina could not come up with a geographical location, however, nor did Salbach. Until further documentary evidence establishes a specific issuing authority, the most we can say is that it is a Spanish American royalist issue. The only examples known to us besides the present lot are the Salbach specimens in both gold and silver and the Medina specimen in silver. Clearly, this is an extremely rare piece worthy of the most select collections of military awards, decorations, and proclamations.

CHILE, Valdivia, Tesorería y Aduana Unidas Valdivia, 4 reales, 1840, very rare, PMG Choice F 15 NET. Pick-S101. Among the earliest Republican bank notes of Chile, and rather choice for this local necessity issue. This series circulated in the southern Province of Valdivia, issued in denominations of 4 and 8 reales between 1840 and 1844, and recalled almost in its entirety. Unredeemed notes are unknown and presentable examples of this very scarce 4 reales denomination are rare. Circulated with a sewn horizontal split but otherwise quite presentable with bold printing of its basic design including several stamped seals on both sides, overall quite rare as one of just two notes in the PMG census below a VF 25 example and an appealing example of the first paper money of Chile. DP-6223; Pick-S274. The rarity of this note cannot be overstated since it is among the first notes issued by the Banco de Bogotá after its founding in 1870. Its ornate design, created by Perkins, Bacon and Co. of London, is sharply rendered in black ink with several circular red denominators throughout, the reverse showing a large design centered around the signature of the Cajero. While circulated with some stains and a small internal split near the left margin, the sharpness of the design suggests a higher grade than assigned. This is the only example recorded to date for this denomination and series issued during the existence of the Banco de Bogotá.
