Complete and intact brass calipers (compass/navigational dividers), ex-Atocha (1622), ex-Caesar's Pa
Complete and intact brass calipers (compass/navigational dividers), ex-Atocha (1622), ex-Caesar's Palace (1987). 16.64 grams total. 4¼" long. Complete, intact, and fully functional, this piece consists of two long, thin arms emanating from interlocking round tops rotating on a pin, a navigational device used to measure point-to-point distances on mariner's charts. This artifact was among the first selected to be sold on behalf of major investors after the "Mother Lode" find of 1985, in the lesser-known "Caesar's Palace" auction of 1987 in Las Vegas that preceded the larger Christie's sale of June 1988 in New York. In fact these dividers (described in 1987 as "in good working condition) are very similar to a pair that sold as lot 18 in the Christie's auction, touted as recovered from the same "pilot's chest" in the wreck that no doubt yielded the present piece. Its rarity and importance are enhanced by an impressive display box. From the Atocha (1622), with original Fisher photo-certificate SR 1247, pedigreed to the Caesar's Palace (Butterfield & Butterfield, Las Vegas) auction "Mel Fisher's Treasures of the Atocha" of September 1987, with original lot-tag 203, housed in a padded glass-and-wood display box with brass latch.

Large and intact silver candlestick holder and hollow round base, marked with crown-in-beaded-circle
Large and intact silver candlestick holder and hollow round base, marked with crown-in-beaded-circle tax stamp, ex-Atocha (1622), ex-Christie's. 517 grams. 10" tall, 7" in diameter. Impressively large and heavy silver candlestick holder, fully intact apart from minor splits, chips, and dents, consisting of a 7" long stem of graduated ring design screwed into a broad, tall, hollow circular base. The underside rim bears a faint but distinctive mark of a crown within a beaded circle. Surfaces are exceptionally well preserved for an artifact of this type, with minimal corrosion and attractive light toning throughout. The crown mark is particularly significant, as it closely matches tax marks found on 1649-52 Potosí cob 8 reales recovered from the Capitana (1654). A comparable crown mark is attributed to Lima, Peru, by Cristina Esteras Martín in Marcas de Platería Hispanoamericana, Siglos XVI-XX (1992). No doubt it was the mark of a Peruvian Caja Real (Royal Treasury Office) to show that tax had been paid or, in the case of the coins, that the silver was approved for re-circulation. While the original certificate is no longer present, this piece retains its Treasure Salvors inventory numbers 696 and 2061. A substantial and important silver artifact with an exceptional old auction pedigree. From the Atocha (1622), pedigreed to the original Christie's Atocha auction of June 1988 (lot 66), with photocopies from catalog and printout from Fisher database, also pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 15 (lot 1526) and Auction 7 (lot 1859).

According to the accompanying tag, "Gunner's Dice were made from wrought iron bar stock and cut into cubes to be used as scatter shot," and that seems as good an explanation as any for these solid chunks of iron (six in all) of irregular shapes and sizes. From the Atocha (1622), with original Fisher plastic tag and photo-certificate 03A-52384, pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 5 (lot 1327).

Large blue-on-white Chinese porcelain lidded jar with four small handles, ex-"Vung Tao Wreck" (ca. 1

Substantial porcelain piece painted in blue with sparse design of flowers and flowering bushes around the sides, smooth flat bottom (like a large cookie jar), four little ceramic loops at shoulders, the lid not an exact match but rare as intact, sea worn appearance with most of glaze worn away. These wares were made in various locations in Vietnam and intended for a European market, from a ship bound from China to Jakarta where the porcelain would have been purchased by the Dutch East India Company for transshipment to Holland. Large resin block containing four Dutch silver ducatoons, four Chinese porcelain shards, four musket
Large resin block containing four Dutch silver ducatoons, four Chinese porcelain shards, four musket-balls (spring-shot), a sword handle, and a large piece of wood, all from the wrecks of the Merestein (1702) and the Middelburg (1781), both off Saldanha Bay, South Africa, ex-Glendining. 20 lb total. 15½" x 3½" x 8". Very thick, transparent resin block containing a collage of original silver coins and small artifacts around a thick piece of wooden hull. The coins are large ducatoons of the Spanish and United Netherlands and come from the Merestein, as do a wire-wrapped sword handle and several spring-shot musket-balls, while the blue-and-white Chinese porcelain shards (one nearly complete) come from the Middelburg. We assume this piece was assembled for a museum display in the 1970s (probably in South Africa), with the ship names on a plastic plaque on top, and it does show some age, including cracks on the bottom, but it still makes a great display and really looks like the items are underwater. HEAVY—PICKUP IN PERSON RECOMMENDED. From the Merestein (1702) and the Middelburg (1781), some of the artifacts pedigreed to the Glendining (London) auction of October 1975, with Sedwick photo-certificate.

British double-barreled flintlock carriage pistol, Tatham & Egg, ca. 1801-15. 2.65 lbs. 14" overall, 8" barrel. High-quality original example of a rare type of flintlock holster or carriage pistol by one of the best makers in the first decade of the 19th century, with "Tatham & Egg" engraved on lock plates and deeply sunken gold makers' hallmarks at breech of each barrel. Tower of London private proof marks are visible on top of the stock in an oval cartouche. The barrels retain much of their original brown-striped finish, now mixing with brown patina, the locks with very crisp action and the steel mountings in superior condition, with a nice even gray patina and only negligible pitting, the trigger guard retaining most of its original dark-blue finish, and the stock with checkering on grips showing minimal handling marks, almost like new condition.

British light dragoon flintlock pistol, first type (1756-1770).
British light dragoon flintlock pistol, first type (1756-1770). 2.1 lb. 17" long, 10" barrel. This very rare first type British dragoon flintlock pistol was originally designed and crafted by the Royal Armory in 1756 before being superseded in 1759 by the shorter plain version with a 9-inch barrel. During the American Revolutionary War, both British cavalry troops as well as mounted Loyalist units were armed with one to two pistols each, which may have included the earlier first type. The lock bears a large engraved crown over GR (representing either George II or George III), a small crown over broad arrow (the British Board of Ordnance mark for government arms), and TOWER engraved on the tail of the lock plate. The barrel is stamped at the breech with a small crown over GR and a small crown over crossed scepters (both Board of Ordnance proof marks associated with the Royal Armory), along with a small crown over the numeral 4 near the touch-hole, indicating a government-arm viewer’s mark. The stock bears the Ordnance storekeeper’s mark of a crown over intertwined GR initials and the date 1786, which records the date of inventory or storage rather than manufacture. The wooden ramrod is a replacement, but it is an exact reproduction, including the correct brass tip. Eye-appealing condition with just normal wear and crisp functional action, the barrel with shallow but negligible pitting, the wood stock with very minor wear marks including a tiny chip towards the back of the lock, excellent brass mounts. Purchased from N. Flayderman & Co. of New Milford, CT in 1968.

The lock bears a large engraved crown over GR, representing George II, along with a small crown over broad arrow, the British Board of Ordnance mark for government arms. The tail is engraved VERNON over 1759. The barrel is stamped at the breech with a small crown over GR and an arrow, as well as a small crown over crossed scepters, both recognized as Board of Ordnance proof marks associated with the Royal Armory at the Tower of London. A crown over intertwined GR is stamped into the stock wrist near the rear of the lock, serving as a Board of Ordnance storekeeper’s mark. The pistol retains its original brass-tipped wooden ramrod. Very nice condition with normal wear, functional lock and trigger, the walnut wood bearing some small marks including two chips on the lock along with two thin cracks toward the front neatly reinforced with glue, the barrel possessing mild surface spots yet otherwise quite nice for the age. Lot of 51 small iron chainmail links, Spanish colonial, early to mid-1500s, found in New Mexico ca. 1985. 13 grams total. According to the accompanying letter, these chainmail links were found at the site of the Santiago Pueblo in the Rio Grande River valley near Bernalillo, New Mexico, by amateur archeologist Dee D. Brecheisen in the mid-1980s. Santiago Pueblo was an indigenous community visited by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1541, destroyed in the process but resettled later that century. Coronado was searching for the fabled Seven Cities of Gold, but instead encountered a dozen villages, or pueblos, like this one, peopled by Tiwa-speaking natives, who became known generally as Pueblo Indians. Brecheisen's recoveries at the site included several pieces of "plata corriente" (some in this same auction) and other Spanish items from the early to mid-1500s. With letter and provenance statement from the finder's son.

Dutch copperplate-engraved map of the northern Caribbean entitled "Jonathan Dickensons Ramspoedige Reystogt van Jamaika na Pensylvania nagespoord" (Leyden), by Pieter van der Aa, undated (1706), very rare, hand colored, matted and framed. 20" x 18". Professionally and beautifully matted and framed, a hand-colored sideways engraving of Florida and the Eastern Seaboard, Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola. This map accompanied a 1707 Dutch version of Jonathan Dickinson's journal. Historians and South Floridians should recognize the saga of Jonathan Dickinson, a Jamaican merchant on his way to a new life in Philadelphia with his family in 1696, after the great Port Royal earthquake of 1692 left them in ruins, who ended up shipwrecked off Jupiter Island on the southeast coast of Florida in 1696 and held captive by the Jobe (Hobe) natives before escaping to St. Augustine up the coast, his name now attached to South Florida's largest state park, in the vicinity of Hobe Sound.

British map of the Manila Galleon passage by George Anson entitled "A Chart of the Channel in the Philippine Islands through which the Manila Galeon passes with a Map of Manila Island," engraved by Richard William Seale, 1763, hand colored and matted. Outside mat 16½" x 14½", image 10¼" x 8½". This 1763 chart of the Philippines, based on George Anson’s voyage around the world, maps the Manila-Acapulco galleon route from the Mole of Cavite through the islands of Luzon, Mindoro, Marinduque, Burias, Tiaco, Capul, and San Bernardino, to the open waters north of Samar, identified here as “Samal.” Originally hand colored, the chart illustrates British knowledge of the Spanish-controlled archipelago and, more importantly, their naval routes. The marked track culminates near Samar, where Anson captured the Nuestra Señora de Covadonga in 1743, laden with silver. The stylized, blocky coastlines also reveal the limitations of contemporary European geographic knowledge of the Philippines. First published as one of three charts accompanying Anson’s highly successful 1748 Voyage round the World, the map became an important visual record of the Manila galleon trade and British naval activity in the region. Nice condition with bold ink colors, two small internal tears at center, tear and tape repair on bottom right corner.

Original oil-on-canvas painting of pirate Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts by Rick Reeves (1994), signed and dated, framed. 29" x 25". "Vivid color and impeccable detail" is the only way we can think of to describe this beautiful portrait by the now-famous Rick Reeves, whose pirate portraits are in high demand. Every single "treasure" you could associate with pirates is present in this beach scene: cannon and cannonballs, flintlock musket and pistols, dagger and rapier, "onion" bottles, clay pipe, treasure chest, just to name a few. A pirate galley is moored in the background, flying the first flag associated with this particular rogue, a Welshman of the early 1700s who is famous for having captured more prizes (over 470) than any other pirate of his time, his death in battle in 1722 marking the end of the Golden Age of Piracy and fulfilling his self-stated mantra: "a merry life and a short one shall be my motto." The attention to detail in this painting is truly mind-boggling in its accuracy and thoroughness. A distressed wood frame in black-and-gold completes the package. Pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 4 (lot 1096).
