MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 8 escudos Royal (galano), Philip V, 1714 J, very rare, NGC MS 65 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label). S-M30; Cal-91; KM-R57.3; Fr-7. 26.94 grams. Since the 1960s, the 1715 Fleet has yielded a wealth of stunning gold 8 escudos Royals ranging in date from 1695 to 1715; but there is something particularly alluring about the 1714's, which, like this one, exhibit the same super-sharp details and smooth fields seen on regular issues but in a perfectly round format showing even striking pressure throughout, and of course with certain details (like floret ornaments and daggers in tressure dimples) specific to the Royal dies for this year. Curiously, unlike other years, the Royal dies of 1714 were used on regular cob planchets as well, and also on roundish "quasi-Royals," perhaps right after the striking of the present coin, which exhibits some very minor doubling (trumped by a very bold final strike) and localized rim weakness that set it apart from other examples of this date showing fully struck outer borders on exceptionally broad flans. This piece is nevertheless perfectly centered to allow for 100% full legends and inner elements, and it was struck in medal alignment, topped off with a deep, rich color and bright mint luster. We can find no evidence of wear or shipwreck damage on this piece, although there are a few tiny black spots to attest to its time in the elements, and in fact it is tied with one other for second finest certified behind a single MS 66 at NGC, with another MS66 at PCGS as well. By our records, of ten known examples this is only the third to enter the market publicly. Not only is this a "golden" opportunity to acquire a genuine galano, it is also of special appeal to hardcore researchers studying die states and the potential link to the known "quasi-Royal" 8 escudos of 1714. Fabulously lustrous, with full pillars-and-waves and cross-castles-lions that are just off-center enough to allow a full king's name PHILIPPVS, this date unlisted in references until noted by Dr. Frank Sedwick in his 1988 Coinage of the Americas Conference presentation (published in The Coinage of El Peru) as "unlisted but exists," this example in fact one of only two we have seen or heard of (the other listed as AU 58 in the NGC census) outside of the State of Florida Collection, which has two. All four examples are struck from the same pillars-side die, which (as one of the State specimens shows) are the only 4 escudos to have legend ending in REXA (a curious precursor to dates in the legend, as the A stands for ANNO), and, a bit more trivially, feature P-V-A with the A punched over another A that was way too far to the left. There are two different cross-side dies, one appearing on three of the coins and the other die on just one of the State coins. Because the tail of the 9 in the date dips into the waves, at times these coins have been confused for issues of the date 1700, the assayer for which is H and not M, as we see here. An exceptional Bogotá 8 escudos distinguished by its extraordinary roundness, unusually complete strike and remarkable clarity of the date and principal design elements. Broad and nearly perfectly circular flan with a beautifully centered crowned shield, bold F-S mintmark arrangement to left and a particularly clear denomination 8 with assayer S below to right. The reverse displays a remarkably complete and well-centered Jerusalem cross within tressure, with strong interior devices, extensive peripheral legend and a notably clear date for the issue. The combination of symmetry, centering and completeness gives this piece a pronounced "quasi-Royal" appearance, highly unusual among regular Bogotá cob 8 escudos. The surfaces are especially attractive, with a beautiful, rich, yellow-orange original patina that enhances the depth of the devices and gives the coin a warm, completely natural appearance. Only limited peripheral weakness is present, leaving an exceptional amount of the original design visible on both sides. Beyond its striking appearance, this coin possesses an extraordinary pedigree and publication history. It has passed through the cabinets of several important collections, and we have been able to trace its documented history back to 1936, when it first appeared in the numismatic record in the Lonja del Almidón (Madrid) auction of March 30, just before the Spanish Civil War effectively ended major coin auctions in Spain for many years. ARCE-67 (this coin); Restrepo-M66.30; S-B11; Cal-1920 (under Ph. V); KM-14.2; Fr-4a. A beautiful example, extensively pedigreed, with choice full cross-and-tressure that is off-center just enough to show almost all of Philip V's name and ordinal, the shield also off-center but choice and with clear CA- for Charles II, pertaining to a chaotic transitional period of 1700-2 in which Philip's name was combined with that of the deceased Charles before the coins returned to just Charles alone in 1703, probable evidence of a cover-up related to a secret reduction in fineness. Unfortunately, the date is not visible on this coin, but from die matching we know it is either an inverted 1702 reading as "2071" inward from the edge, or 1704 (normal orientation) punched over "2071." Also not visible in the cross-side legend is assayer V.A before the date (presumably for Ventura de Arce), again confirmed by 1704 coins and one other known example of this "2071" die that was lot 179 in the original Real Eight/Christensen auction of October 1964. Gold "finger" bar 13, 22 oz troy (684 grams), marked with fineness XXIII: (23.5K) and weight 148-6 (castellanos-tomines), ex-Atocha (1622), pre-"Mother Lode," ex-Morse. 4¾" x 1" x ½". This gold bar, impressively high in intrinsic value, was among at least fourteen of its kind found in one cache on the Atocha in 1982, which turned out to be a very interesting grouping of ingots that all lack tax stamps or any other marks except fineness and weight, both of which were simply carved into the surface and not stamped. Significantly, both numbers are quite accurate, the fineness confirmed by XRF (23.5K gold, with about 2% silver and traces of platinum, copper, and iron only) and the weight calculated as 148 castellanos of 4.6 grams each plus 6 tomines at 0.575 gram each, hence 684 grams or 22 oz troy (certificate says 22.09). At first it was postulated that these had to be "church" bars, as the wealth of the Catholic Church would not have been taxed, and since the bars were not for commerce, no record of an assay was needed either. We have seen a similar situation with gold ingots belonging to South American missions among the salvaged items from the Luz wreck of 1752. The contravening theory that these Atocha bars were contraband instead seems less plausible when you consider that most contraband lacked any markings at all. We may never know the whole story behind these ingots, but what is incontrovertible is that they are among the purest and most intrinsically valuable gold items from the Atocha. Like the others of this type, this specific ingot is well molded, with smooth sides and bottom (stamped with its Treasure Salvors number 13A) and with the top a bit sunken from casting, traces of coral in small bubble-pits and in the markings. Gold "finger" bar 20, 17.55 oz troy (546 grams), marked with fineness XVIII (18K), foundry or assayer IVAN | P3, and tax stamps, ex-Santa Margarita (1622). 7¾" x 1" x ¼". An uncut and well-marked bar with three iterations of fineness XVIII inside incuse box (confirmed by XRF, the only impurity being silver), four partial circular tax stamps of Philip III (one with king's ordinal III showing), and a single cartouche exhibiting IVAN (with the IVA in monogram) above P3, which we speculate could stand for an assayer named Juan Pérez. Some old X-scratches over the assayer mark could have significance as well, perhaps as a sort of cancellation or transfer. Curiously, the bottom of the bar bears a fifth partial tax stamp in addition to the Treasure Salvors number 20 and a special 1980 seal that was discontinued after the first finds. The top of the bar shows an atypical amount of tiny bubble pits, as if the metal was too hot or cooled too fast. Finally, at one end is a cylindrical "bite," where the assayer removed and retained a small amount to determine the fineness before he stamped it on the ingot. Light yellow in color, impressively complete, and further desirable as part of the first major find to determine that Fisher had indeed found the Santa Margarita shipwreck. Small cut piece of a gold "finger" bar, 1.3 oz troy (40.38 grams), marked with fineness XXI: (21.5K), foundry/assayer SARGOSA | PECARTA, and tax stamp, very rare, ex-"Dry Tortugas Wreck" (ca. 1622), Oceans Odyssey Plate. Roughly 1" x ¾" x ¼". In their time, complete Spanish gold bars represented massive amounts of value, too much for the average person, so typically they were cut into small, coin-like pieces like this one, which approximated the value of an 8 escudos plus a 4 escudos. It was for this reason that the bars were marked with fineness and tax stamps multiple times, and this particular piece was strategically cut to show both a partial tax stamp and the -SA end of foundry or assayer cartouche SARGOSA | PECARTA (scratched with an X, perhaps deliberately), over-stamped with the fineness of XXI inside an incuse box with two dots inside a separate box to denote an additional half-karat. The cuts are quite sharp, consisting of a single heavy through-chop at one end and several small jagged chiselings at the other end. On top of its appeal as a rare cut piece, this little trophy was published as one of the featured finds from a deep-water wreck that was eventually identified as the Buen Jesús y Nuestra Señora del Rosario, another ship in the same 1622 Fleet as the Atocha and Santa Margarita of Mel Fisher fame. While PECARTA probably refers to the name of an unknown assayer, no doubt SARGOSA refers to Zaragoza, on the shores of the Rio Nechí in the province of Antioquia, Colombia. Zaragoza was home to one of the most prolific gold mines in the early 1600s, producing some 20 million pesos of gold from 1590 to 1645, and held a caja real (royal treasury office) as early as 1582. Bars with this marking are well known from the 1622 Fleet, but this is the first time we have seen it on a cut piece. Lot of five gold bits, from 0.03 to 0.20 gram each (total 0.36 gram), 16K to 18K fine, ex-"Dry Tortugas Wreck" (ca. 1622), Oceans Odyssey Plate. Each no more than 1/8". These little bits are not natural nuggets but rather leftover fragments that resulted when large ingots were cut into coin-like pieces (like the previous lot), certainly too valuable to be discarded in their time but also not worth re-melting and re-assaying, instead left as "small change" for little transactions. Each comes with its own original certificate, and two of the larger bits are featured in the same photo as the previous lot in the original publication on the finds from what was eventually identified as the Buen Jesús y Nuestra Señora del Rosario of the 1622 Fleet. Despite the challenge of testing such diminutive pieces, we were able to get XRF readings of about 16K to 18K. Small cut-marks are visible on one. Silver "tumbaga" bar M-136, 6.18 lb av (2803 grams), with markings of fineness IV9cccc (1900/2400), serial RLXXX, and assayer B~Vo, ex-"Tumbaga Wreck" (ca. 1528), García-Barneche Plate. 13¼" x 3-3/8" x ½". Thin but neatly formed ingot with relatively smooth top punctuated by pits from gas bubbles or burnt-off charcoal, clear markings in one cluster near center on bottom, crude squarish assayer's "bite" in one corner, minimal surface corrosion, overall a good-sized bar of manageable weight. From the "Tumbaga Wreck" (ca. 1528), with Sedwick photo-certificate, pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 23 (lot 242), plated on page 113 of Agustín García-Barneche's The "Tumbaga" Saga, 2nd ed (2018).

Silver "tumbaga" bar M-19, 5.25 lb av (2381 grams), with markings of fineness 9CCCCLXX (970/2400), serial RC, assayer B~Vo, and two partial tax stamps, ex-"Tumbaga Wreck" (ca. 1528). 7" x 3" x ¾". Typical "half-brick," neatly formed with smooth bottom and sides but somewhat rippled top from the cooling of the metal, with assayer's "bite" in one corner and all markings on bottom consisting of two tax stamps left of center and the rest in a cluster to the right, the left side of the fineness likely missing the number for one thousand (iU), as the bar does not appear to be only 40% silver (970/2400) and probably should be marked iU9CCCCLXX (1970/2400) for 82% silver. In fact, XRF testing inside cracks does show a fineness of about 83% silver, while surface readings of about 93% probably reflect the typical loss of non-silver alloy from conservation. Silver "tumbaga" bar M-32, 5.21 lb av (2363 grams), with markings of fineness iUL (1050/2400 fine), serial RC, assayer B~Vo, and one partial tax stamp, ex-"Tumbaga Wreck" (ca. 1528). 7" x 3½" x 5/8". From a typical "half-brick" mold but with bulge in center of uneven bottom, slightly rippled top with all markings localized together near right side, diagonal assayer's "bite" in top-right corner with possible older bite in opposite corner from earlier assay (any associated markings obliterated before the shipwreck). From the "Tumbaga Wreck" (ca. 1528), with Sedwick photo-certificate.

Half-cut silver "splash" ingot, 21.2 oz troy (658 grams), with markings of fineness and foundry/assayer cartouche, ex-"Golden Fleece Wreck" (ca. 1550). Roughly 7" x 3½" x 1/8". From a typically thin and freeform ingot (cast without mold), about half of it with natural edge but the rest showing a 4½"-long neat chisel-cut and two 2" crude breaks at a right angle that also caused a bend in that area, exhibiting more markings than usual for this wreck consisting of fineness in four boxes and foundry or assayer in rectangular cartouche, unfortunately all somewhat corroded and unreadable (XRF tested at 98% fine silver). From the "Golden Fleece Wreck" (ca. 1550).

Small cut piece of a silver "splash" ingot, 0.93 oz troy (28.93 grams), with partial tax stamp, ex-unidentified ca.-1554 wreck off Santo Domingo. Roughly 1" x ½" x 3/8". A thick, interior segment in rectangular shape with all four sides broken rather than chiseled, intentionally cut to include most of a small circular tax stamp (albeit unreadable), used in its time as a "plata corriente" coin (the equivalent of an 8 reales, more or less), but possibly adulterated with lead, as shown by XRF results, which average about 95% fine silver overall, dark gray in color. From an unidentified wreck of the Spanish 1554 Fleet sunk off Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Large silver "splash" ingot, 96 oz troy (2984 grams), marked with circular tax stamp showing pillars and PLVS VLTRA, partially cut, ex-unidentified ca.-1554 wreck off Santo Domingo. Roughly 9" in diameter. Very thin, broad puddle of refined silver (XRF tested at over 99% fine silver, hence current melt value is over $6000), naturally poured without a mold, showing a rough bottom but smooth top with nearly full and distinctive tax stamp near edge featuring two pillars and the motto PLVS VLTRA under a crown, the edge somewhat irregular but with approximately 4½" of it tangentially sliced off in its time to make "small change," lightly toned silver color all over. Around 2007-8, coins and ingots like this one identical to those from the 1554 Fleet off Padre Island, Texas, entered the market from a shipwreck off Santo Domingo that had to have been carrying material from the same 1554 Fleet, either on a ship that survived the initial storm or salvaged in its time and lost again. The markings on the ingots are a match with those found off Padre Island, and are distinctly different from "Golden Fleece Wreck" ingots of ca. 1550. From an unidentified wreck of the Spanish 1554 Fleet sunk off Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Large silver bar 585 from Oruro, 67 lb 0.48 oz troy (25 kg), marked with fineness IIUCCCLXXX (2380/2400), manifest number LXXIX (79), owner/shipper marks and tax stamps, Class Factor 0.9, ex-Atocha (1622), ex-Morse. 15¾" long, up to 5" wide, 2½" tall. A typically large "loaf" of silver but with particularly sloping sides hiding a shallow cylindrical assayer's "bite" at one end, the top showing fineness marking in center and manifest number above and to right of that, with large owner/shipper "siglas" near both ends, including several that were marked out (canceled) in their time, ship's silvermaster mark V (dr Vreder) in one corner. Large silver bar 387 from Potosí, 79 lb 1.76 oz troy (28.4 kg), marked with date 16Z1, fineness IIUCCCLX (2360/2400), manifest number IIIIUDCXXVII (4627), A-series mark, and tax stamps, Class Factor 0.8, ex-Atocha (1622), ex-Morse. 13¾" x 5" x 3". Neatly cast "loaf" with bold markings of manifest number and fineness (including Mexía assayer cartouche) above and below central circular tax stamps flanking the typical double-scoop assayer's "bite," with clear PoI6ZI mine/date cartouche (mentioned on certificate) below and left of the manifest, two more tax stamps closer to each end, also with bold A (from an official letter punch) to left of fineness that denotes an undocumented series of bars without owner/shipper marks (most also lacking silvermaster V), which some researchers believe were used to pay taxes to the crown and therefore were not marked to be reunited with their owners upon arrival in Spain. Medium-sized silver bar from Potosí, 19.37 lb troy (7.23 kg), marked with date 1622, fineness, manifest number CVII (107), and tax stamp, ex-Atocha (1622). Roughly 13" x 4" x 1". A mysterious bar, originally found encrusted with coins, in an atypical size yet with top like a larger bar showing fairly clear manifest number above and weaker (unreadable fineness, XRF tested at 98% fine silver) below a central double-scoop assayer's "bite," weak but certain PoI6ZZ mine/date cartouche to left of manifest and circular tax stamp to right. The "bite" appears to be the same size as for larger bars, hence perhaps this one has simply corroded down on the bottom, but we also note a higher than normal level of lead content (about 1.5%) and lack of any owner/shipper "siglas" or A-series mark, definitely a bar with a story to tell!. Encrusted large silver bar 505, 53 lb 5.48 oz troy (20 kg), fineness unknown, no visible markings, ex-Santa Margarita (1622), ex-Morse. 15" x 5" x 2½". It is hard to know what to make of this bar! For starters, it is one of very few bars that Treasure Salvors left totally encrusted, just as it was found in 1980 (the "mini-mother lode" find when the shipwreck was confirmed to be Santa Margarita), its special nature evident far ahead of our time of XRF testing, which indicates the surface content (in the few places where the silver is exposed) to be as little as 40% silver and as much as 36% lead, with a gold content between 2.5% and 5%! Our best conclusion, especially considering a 78% copper ridge within the white crust on top, is that this silver bar was either contained in some sort of special box or was wrapped in lead, either way almost certainly contraband. While a small section of the top edge has been cleaned to show the dark silver (same for an area on the bottom where Treasure Salvors stamped the number 505, matching a sticker on top), the next owner might consider carefully cleaning off more of the top crust to see what markings are underneath, maybe even a double-scoop assayer's "bite" for Potosí, considering there does not seem to be any cylindrical version (for Oruro) on either end. In the meantime this unique piece makes for a great "au naturel" display with mysteries within. Note: The certificate inexplicably gives the weight as "43 lbs 638.68 Troy Ounces," whereas our own measurement is 641.48 oz troy (53 lb 5.48 oz troy). Small silver "splash" ingot, 3 oz troy (94.62 grams), with encrustation, no markings (probably contraband), ex-Concepción (1641). 3" x ¾" x 1/8". A small, oval "puddle" of silver with smooth top, the bottom rough and half-encrusted in white and brown, XRF tested at 97.65% silver and 1.66% gold, a neat little piece that may have served as the equivalent of three and a half 8 reales in its time. Small silver "splash" ingot, 2.35 oz troy (73.10 grams), no markings (probably contraband), ex-Concepción (1641). 2¼" in diameter . A small, flat disk of about 85% fine silver (XRF also shows almost 12%) with natural lacuna on edge, traces of old encrustation but mostly smooth and toned, perhaps circulated as the equivalent of two and a half 8 reales in its time. From the Concepción (1641), with original Henry M. Taylor, III certificate with hand-written "splash" and weight.

Large silver bar, 453.7 oz troy (14 kg), marked with fineness IIUCC C X L II I (2343/2400), assayer ZALAZAR, manifest CXCII (192), and owner/shipper mark, very rare provenance, ex-Joanna (1682), ex-Bir. 16" x 4½" x 1½". This long ingot somewhat resembles the big Peruvian silver loaves from the Atocha of just 60 years earlier (and in fact recovered around the same time), with very similar markings, but of course with a later assayer cartouche that clearly says ZALAZAR, supposedly of the Oruro mine since there is no double-scoop "bite" for Potosí on the top (the edge too corroded to see a cylindrical version for Oruro). That cartouche appears right after the fineness (confirmed by XRF to be 98% fine silver), which appears upside down relative to the manifest number and owner/shipper "sigla" at the other end. Faded ghosts of other marks (mine/date and tax stamps) appear below center. The bottom and sides of this bar are quite eroded, and one side bears two drill holes from a modern assay. According to the salvors (who recovered this bar on February 23, 1984, as stated on the accompanying certificate), almost all the big silver bars from this wreck were melted, so this piece is accordingly rare; in fact, it is the only one we have seen (we sold it to Mark Bar in 1998). This piece may represent the only chance to own an ingot from the Joanna shipwreck. From the Joanna (1682), pedigreed to the Mark Bir Collection, with his certificate from 1998.

Neatly formed Dutch silver ingot, 62 oz troy (1933 grams), about 98.5% fine, with markings of VOC (Dutch East India Co.) monogram with A (Amsterdam) above and "jumping goat" assayer-mark of Otto and/or Wouter Buck, ex-Rooswijk (1739). 6½" X 1½" X 1¼". Choice full markings placed near one end of the bar, the other end typically chiseled around a very deep pit containing encrustation, all surfaces very smooth with only minor pitting, nicely toned in crevices. Medium-sized Spanish colonial silver "plata corriente" cut piece with partial tax stamp (early to mid-1500s), 2 oz troy (63.06 grams). Roughly 1¼" x 1¼" x ½". Thick piece tapering to a thin edge, broken in three places (at right angles) from a large "splash" ingot, with one side smooth and the other rougher but with partial circular tax stamp showing (R)EX, light in color (XRF tested at about 88% silver with significant amounts of lead [<9%] and iridium [<3%], but not much copper), approximately equivalent to two 8 reales in its time.

Small Spanish colonial silver "plata corriente" cut piece with partial tax stamp (early to mid-1500s), 1.14 oz troy (35.36 grams). Roughly 1¼" x 1" x 3/8". A roughly wedge-shaped chunk with some natural edge within two rough sides as broken from a "splash" ingot, one side quite rough (as made) but the other somewhat smooth and bearing a very clear circular tax stamp with REX+P showing, light tan sediment in crevices, XRF tested at 65% to 88% silver with 6%-9% lead and 5%-25% iridium (no copper), approximating the value of an 8 reales in its time.

Small Spanish colonial silver "plata corriente" cut piece with partial tax stamp (early to mid-1500s), 1.46 oz troy (45.30 grams), found in New Mexico ca. 1985. Roughly 1¼" x 7/8" x ½". A thick rectangular chunk, broken on four sides from a large "splash" ingot made of 86% silver with as much as 4.5% lead, 7% iridium, and 2% copper (according to XRF testing), a typical "plata corriente" piece (used for money before coins were available in quantity in the colonies) more or less equivalent to one and two-thirds of an 8 reales in its time. According to the accompanying letter, this piece was among several found at the site of the Santiago Pueblo in the Rio Grande River valley near Bernalillo, New Mexico, by amateur archeologist Dee D. Brecheisen in the mid-1980s. Santiago Pueblo was an indigenous community visited by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1541, destroyed in the process but resettled later that century. Coronado was searching for the fabled Seven Cities of Gold, but instead encountered a dozen villages, or pueblos, like this one, peopled by Tiwa-speaking natives, which became known generally as Pueblo Indians. With letter and provenance statement from the finder's son.

Small Spanish colonial silver "plata corriente" cut piece with partial tax stamp (late 1500s to early 1600s), 0.35 oz troy (11.04 grams), found in New Mexico ca. 1985. Roughly 1" x ½" x ¼". Very dark in color, with a sheen of brown oxidation tinged with white, broken in three places off the edge of a small "splash" ingot, with one side showing the interior castles-and-lions design of the center of a circular tax stamp that is associated with ingots from the period of Philip II to IV (also with parts of legend visible, including a piece of PHILIPPVS), XRF tested at anywhere from 48% to 81% silver with as much as 20% lead and 24% iron, also some copper and iridium and even a trace of manganese. Despite the chaotic composition, this is otherwise a typical "plata corriente" piece (used for money before coins were available in quantity in the colonies), perhaps circulated as a 2 reales in its time, and was among several found at the site of the Santiago Pueblo in the Rio Grande River valley near Bernalillo, New Mexico, by amateur archeologist Dee D. Large copper ingot 126, 1022 oz troy (31.8 kg), ex-Atocha (1622). Roughly 16" x 10" x 2½". One of the larger copper ingots found in quantity on this shipwreck, none with markings and all rather roughly cast, with lots of bumps and crags that on this piece at least harbor a wealth of whitish-green encrustation, this example a bit more rectangular than most but otherwise typical. Nesmith-6d type; Cal-116; S-M1; KM-16. 12.20 grams. Despite areas of surface corrosion and horn silver, an overall solid and well-detailed example with virtually full legends and interiors, toned in crevices, small gouge in shield. This type with a rhomboid panel was produced late in Rincón's tenure and is one of the last emissions, as seen by P/R in the next assayer, and used instead of a rounded panel by the three subsequent assayers in the Early Series. MEXICO, Mexico City, cob 8 reales, Charles II, assayer not visible, plugged for use in the U.S. colonies (regulated), extremely rare, PCGS F details / contemporary plug (Feversham), ex-Christie's. KM-46; Cal-Type 108. 19.40 grams. The history of circulating silver coinage in pre-Independence United States contains a dark chapter in the very early 1700s, when the New England Pine-Willow-Oak Tree hammered coinage (having ended in 1662) was but a memory and new Spanish milled pistareens were just starting to enter the local economy. Prior to the 1720s, this was the heyday of piracy and the consequential influx of Spanish American silver cobs, which were reliable in metal content but impossible to keep from being shaved or clipped. The remedy, as least as far as New York was concerned, was "regulation" in the form of drilling cobs and plugging them with refined silver wire to bring them back up to standard. Typically done by jewelers and silversmiths, this was the precursor to the very rare and important regulated gold coins executed by Brasher, Burger, and other names well known to U.S. numismatists. The early silver, however, was not marked by the silversmiths, and was generally relegated to short lives as mutilations begging to be melted. In truth, we have seen no examples outside of the Feversham finds. It was a revelation when the finds from the Feversham shipwreck first hit the market via Christie's in 1989, which presented several such coins as "entirely unprecedented." New York was Feversham's last port of call, and documents show its purser requisitioned the value of 569 pounds, 12 shillings, 5 pence in silver coinage from the British Treasury Office in New York to buy supplies; whatever was left over sank with the ship, giving us what Christie's called the "only known example of a typical cross section of New York's change in the Colonial era." On the present piece, the plug is most evident on the cross side, where it protrudes from the lower-left quadrant, below a patch of scrubbed dark horn silver. The cross detail is otherwise nice, with one castle full. Only about half the shield is visible on the other side, partially due to corrosion and more dark horn silver, but mostly from flat strike. While the coin was no doubt clipped in its time, it is the corrosion that accounts for the low weight now, as presumably the plug would have brought this piece up to full weight back in 1711. Such coins are virtually unavailable today, as the market quickly absorbed these regulated silver cobs from the Feversham years ago. They remain in high demand as evidence of what the city of New York was using for money in the early 1700s. The story of the St. Geran's sinking includes the tragic death of a young French lady traveling back from France to idyllic Mauritius (then known as Île de France) along with her betrothed, a crew member, her death ostensibly due to a prudish refusal to remove her clothing to keep from drowning, tragically choosing modesty over survival. In 1788 this anecdote became the core of the best-selling novel Paul et Virginie, by the French author Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, which also extolled the virtues of living harmoniously on an island without the constraints of social class divisions. PERU, Cuzco, 8 reales, 1828 G, NGC Shipwreck Effect (SB Pulaski Shipwreck Label). KM-142.2. SB Pulaski shipwreck coins are among the earliest and rarest of all U.S. shipwreck recoveries. The steam packet Pulaski, carrying 187 passengers and crew, left the port of Charleston, South Carolina on June 14, 1838, bound for Baltimore, Maryland. Around 11 PM that night, off the coast of North Carolina, the starboard boiler exploded. Some were killed in the blast, others were lost as the ship quickly went down; around 59 survivors were saved. Unlike the other larger U.S. shipwreck recoveries, where big quantities of coins from commercial shipments were recovered, coins from the Steamboat Pulaski were wholly passenger and crew "pocket change." The find uncovered Mint State U.S. gold coins, a number of U.S. silver coins (mostly half dollars), and many foreign coins that were U.S. legal tender at the time, like this one. The Liberty side of this coin was apparently protected with almost full and original luster showing and the nice sharp AU details indicative of minimal wear in circulation prior to sinking. The arms side, while grainy from saltwater corrosion, still shows full and sharp design details, light gray in color. Recovered from: S.B. COLOMBIA, Bogotá (Cundinamarca), 8 reales, 1821 JF, mintmark BA with dots below and in front of A, NGC Shipwreck Effect (SS Central America Shipwreck Label). Restrepo-157.4; KM-C6. Scarce early Republic of Colombia type that was legal tender in the United States up until February 1857 and represents the pocket change held by actual passengers aboard the SS Central America. Quite circulated (About Fine) with some hairlines from post-salvage cleaning but no major corrosion from its time underwater, legends on both sides quite bold. Recovered from: S.S. Sharp Mint State details with only lightly sandwashed surfaces retaining considerable luster under rich, dark gold toning, desirably pedigreed to the "Gordy-Ashley gold" find (but note that the NGC shipwreck label does not specify), somewhat rare as such. GREAT BRITAIN, London, England, gold sovereign, Victoria (young head), 1852, very rare provenance, NGC AU 50 / Pewabic. Sp-3852; KM-736.1; Fr-387e. Brightly lustrous, with only minor surface friction from circulation. The SS Pewabic, launched in 1863, was a Civil War-era freighter that traveled between Lake Superior and Lake Erie while hauling passengers and cargo (typically copper ingots from the northern mines). On August 9, 1865, the Pewabic's sister ship SS Meteor collided with the Pewabic, which sank shortly thereafter with the loss of 100 to 125 passengers and crew. In 1917 many of the copper ingots were salvaged from the wreck along with artifacts and coins. A further salvage operation in 1974 by Busch Oceanographic Equipment Co. recovered more artifacts along with the purser's safe, which, true to the purser's word, contained less than $50 in paper money and no coins. The very few coins recovered from the Pewabic represent the rarest American shipwreck coins a collector can own when compared to those from the much more available SS Central America, SS Brother Jonathan, and SS Republic. JAMAICA, Government of Jamaica, 10 shillings, 1-11-1940, serial C/10 69315, PMG AU 53 / SS Politician Shipwreck. Pick-38b. The S.S. Politician shipwreck, also known as the "Whisky Galore" wreck, supplied local Hebrides islanders with bottles of whisky and bundles of Jamaican bank notes for several weeks after running aground. This lightly handled example bears the typical staining around the edges while its design remains bold and colorful. Pedigreed to the Rickey Collection (stated on label). Recovered from: S.S. SEYCHELLES, Seychelles Monetary Authority, 100 rupees, (1979), serial A801118, PMG AU 55 / MV Aeolian Sky Shipwreck. Pick-26b. The M.V. Aeolian Sky was a Greek freighter that sank after a collision off Dorset, England, in 1979. The ship's medical bay held a consignment of Seychelles 100 rupees (now recognized as 26b by PMG) stored in nondescript boxes. After the sinking, the British government contracted salvage divers to enter the wreck and retrieve the notes, but the effort was unsuccessful. Reports state that while the bulk of the notes were never located, some fishermen in the area recovered a few notes from the Channel waters in the days after the sinking.
