Silver 1-oz "Golden Crew" commemorative medallion made from Atocha silver in 1985, presented to dive
Silver 1-oz "Golden Crew" commemorative medallion made from Atocha silver in 1985, presented to diver Andy Matroci. 38 mm. frame is 3½" x 3½". Designed by Kevin Hauser and struck by the Highland Mint in silver from ingots recovered from the ship. Obverse: the Atocha sinking in the storm, flanked by dates 1622 and 1985, legend NUESTRA SENORA de ATOCHA above, DIVERS COMMEMORATIVE below; Reverse: two divers recovering ingots and coins from the wreck, MOTHERLODE below, ONE OZ TROY .999 FINE SILVER RECOVERED FROM THE WRECK OF THE ATOCHA encircling; Edge: reeded. Lightly toned UNC. The airtight attribution of this medallion to Atocha diver Andy Matroci could hardly be more significant, as it was Andy and his dive partner, Greg Wareham, who first saw the "Mother Lode" on July 20, 1985, while acting on Andy's hunch to check the southeast corner of the hole they had just blown from Kane Fisher's boat, the Dauntless. The divers working the site at the time became known as the "Golden Crew"; Andy went on to continue the search for more treasure on the Atocha and Santa Margarita as captain of the salvage vessel J.B. Magruder before retiring in 2021. with original certificate and custom stand signed by Andy Matroci.

Limited-edition silver 1-oz "restrike" of a Mexican 8 reales Royal (galano) 1621 D struck ca. 1985 a
Limited-edition silver 1-oz "restrike" of a Mexican 8 reales Royal (galano) 1621 D struck ca. 1985 at the Mexico City Mint using silver from melted-down ingots from the Atocha (1622). 27.27 grams. From a limited striking of 10,000 pieces struck at the Mexico City Mint using 27.27 grams of 97% fine ("or better") silver recovered from the Atocha (presumably from big silver bars), basically a Mexican 8-reales Royal restrike, as the design is completely accurate for a 1621 specimen, yet clearly not intended to deceive, with frosty surfaces and bold design throughout. With Mexico City Mint certificates (generic).
Limited-edition silver 1-oz "restrike" of a Mexican 8 reales Royal (galano) 1621 D struck ca. 1985 a
Limited-edition silver 1-oz "restrike" of a Mexican 8 reales Royal (galano) 1621 D struck ca. 1985 at the Mexico City Mint using silver from melted-down ingots from the Atocha (1622), housed in original plastic holder with small certificates. This is basically a Mexican 8-reales Royal restrike, as the design is completely accurate for a 1621 specimen, yet it is clearly not intended to deceive and comes housed in a special Lucite holder that is embossed with GENUINE LOST SILVER TREASURE OF THE ATOCHA (showing the coin inside a fanciful treasure chest) accompanied by a small certificate of authenticity explaining that the silver used to make the coin came from the Atocha (presumably from one of the huge silver bars) and that the coin was officially "restruck" at the Casa de Moneda in Mexico City, complete with a mint official's signature at the bottom (unfortunately undated but believed to be shortly after the 1985 "Mother Lode" recovery), with mintage limited to 10,000 pieces.
Silver 1-oz token made from Atocha silver by Gary Sleezer ca. 1985.
Silver 1-oz token made from Atocha silver by Gary Sleezer ca. 1985. 31.15 grams. Reportedly made from traces of silver in the oxide crust removed from the bars, hand-struck octagonal tokens like this one showing a caricature of Mel Fisher on obverse and a cross-lions-castles on reverse were sold by the maker (artist Gary Sleezer) outside of Mel Fisher's store in the late 1980s under an express agreement with Mel. An interesting piece harkening back to the heyday of the Atocha salvage with crude yet folksy design commemorating Mel and the discovery of the Atocha with "Today's the Day" in the legend. The first example we have offered and the only one to have appeared on the market recently, possibly rare.

FRENCH COLONIES, struck at the Paris Mint, billon 2 sols (24 deniers), Louis XV, 1743, very rare provenance. Vlack-22; Gad-281; KM-500.29. 2.07 grams. The Vlack reference states: "Specimens examined indicate they were part of a hoard recovered from the French frigate, St Geran, that sunk during a gale when it struck shoals en route to the Île de France (Mauritius) on August 17, 1744." The story of the St. Geran's sinking includes the tragic death of a young French lady traveling back from France to idyllic Mauritius (then known as Île de France) along with her betrothed, a crew member, her death ostensibly due to a prudish refusal to remove her clothing to keep from drowning, tragically choosing modesty over survival. In 1788 this anecdote became the core of the best-selling novel Paul et Virginie, by the French author Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, which also extolled the virtues of living harmoniously on an island without the constraints of social class divisions. Very nice example from this rare wreck with much retained luster and sharp detail, surfaces with very mild corrosion and patchy toning.
