ANCIENT GREEK, Ionia, Magnesia ad Maeandrum, AR tetradrachm, Euphemos, son of Pausanias, "magistrate," ca. mid-2nd century BC, stephanophoric type, NGC AU, strike 5/5, 4/5. BMC 36; SNG Berry 1068. 16.84 grams. Diademed and draped bust of Artemis, right / Apollo, nude, standing left, leaning on tripod, ΕYΦΗΜOΣ ΠAYΣANIOY left; laurel branches in right hand; all within laurel wreath. Stephanophoric refers to the wreath border on the reverse and this style became popular around the eastern Aegean soon after Athens introduced the type as the now-named "New Style" tetradrachms. The engraved dies created a somewhat convex obverse and concave reverse and the coins became especially popular in the city-states of Aeolis-Myrina, Aeolis-Kyme, and Magnesia ad Maeandrum. NGC #2150779-018. Reportedly pedigreed to the Geoffrey & Bequet auction of December 2007, lot 45.

ANCIENT GREEK, Ptolemaic Kingdom, Alexandria mint, AV mnaieion (octodrachm), Arsinöe II Philadelphus
ANCIENT GREEK, Ptolemaic Kingdom, Alexandria mint, AV mnaieion (octodrachm), Arsinöe II Philadelphus (wife of Ptolemy II, 277-270/268 BC), posthumous issue, Class III, ca. 164/163-140 BC, NGC MS, strike 5/5, surface 2/5. CPE II K-43; Svoronos 1498-1499. 27.74 grams. Veiled head of deified Arsinoë II right, wearing diademed stephane and horn of Ammon, scepter surmounted by lotus over left shoulder; K in left field, dotted border / APΣINOHΣ ΦIΛAΔEΛΦOY, double cornucopia bound with royal diadem, containing pyramidal cakes, pomegranates and other fruits, grape cluster hanging from the rim of each horn; dotted border.
Highly lustrous and deeply struck, from artistic Fine Style dies, very attractive for the assigned grade, with strong relief and excellent definition on both sides. The portrait is especially refined, with delicate facial features and well-rendered attributes of divinity, while the reverse displays a full and detailed cornucopia composition, symbolizing abundance and royal prosperity.
Arsinoë II, both sister and wife of Ptolemy II Philadelphos, was elevated to divine status after her death, becoming one of the most important figures of the Ptolemaic dynastic cult. The horn of Ammon associates her with divine authority, while the veiled portrait emphasizes her role as a deified queen. The reverse legend ΦIΛAΔEΛΦOY, meaning “sibling-loving,” reflects the dynastic ideology central to the Ptolemies.
The double cornucopia type is emblematic of fertility, wealth, and the prosperity of Egypt under Ptolemaic rule, often linked to Arsinoë’s posthumous cult. These large gold octodrachms were struck in significant quantities following her death, serving both as prestige issues and as a means of reinforcing dynastic legitimacy and divine favor.
A classic and highly desirable issue, combining historical importance, strong iconography, and elegant Hellenistic style, with this example presenting particularly well for the grade.

ANCIENT ROMAN, Roman Empire, Rome mint, AV aureus, Hadrian, 117-138 AD, NGC Ch XF, strike 5/5, surface 4/5, fine style. BMC-273; RIC-123; Calicó-1267. 7.41 grams. Bust of Hadrian, laureate and cuirassed, right / GEN PR in field, P M TR P COS III, Genius Populi Romani standing left, holding patera and cornucopia. As noted on the slab, a Fine Style example, well centered and sharply struck, with strong detail and largely complete legends. The portrait is particularly appealing, with refined engraving in the facial features, hair, and laurel wreath, along with clear cuirass detail. The reverse is well balanced, showing the Genius in full form, extending a patera in sacrifice and holding a cornucopia as a symbol of abundance. Rich golden surfaces enhance the overall presentation. The legend GEN PR expands to Genius Populi Romani, the divine spirit of the Roman people, not a specific god but a personification of the state itself, embodying its protection, continuity, and collective strength. The paired imagery of sacrifice and plenty underscores the message of a stable and prosperous empire. This type aligns with Hadrian’s focus on consolidation and internal strength, emphasizing order and continuity over expansion. A classic and historically significant aureus issue, valued for both its artistic quality and its clear imperial message. Please use this link to verify the certification number

RIC IV.I (Septimius Severus) 536; Calicó-2641. 7.18 grams. 20 mm. IVLIA DOMNA AVG, draped bust of Julia Domna right, seen from front, wearing the characteristic plaited coiffure gathered into a large chignon at the back of the head / VENERI VICTR, Venus Callipyge standing right, drapery below posterior, palm branch cradled in left arm and apple in outstretched right hand, left elbow resting on a low column. Exceptional Choice Mint State example with flawless 5/5 strike and 5/5 surfaces. The portrait of Julia Domna is boldly struck with remarkable detail in the intricate hairstyle, while the Venus Callipyge reverse is beautifully centered and fully rendered, creating outstanding visual appeal. Julia Domna, born in Emesa in Roman Syria, was the daughter of the hereditary high priest of the sun god Elagabal in one of the wealthiest caravan cities of the eastern Roman world. Celebrated for her beauty, intellect, and education, she was said to possess a horoscope predicting marriage to a king. Septimius Severus learned of this prophecy while serving in Syria and quickly arranged the marriage. When Severus became emperor in AD 193, Julia was elevated to Augusta and became one of the most influential empresses of the Roman world, acting as a trusted advisor and patron of philosophy, literature, and the arts, helping foster a cultural revival in Rome. After the assassination of her son Caracalla in AD 217, and already weakened by illness, the remarkable empress soon passed away, closing the life of one of the most powerful and cultured women of the Roman imperial era. ANCIENT JUDAEA, Jerusalem, AR shekel, First Jewish War, 66-70 AD, dated year 3 (68/9 AD), very rare, NGC AU Star, strike 5/5, surface 5/5, ex-Weissberg. Meshorer-202a; Hendin-6390. 14.28 grams. Omer cup, the Temple vessel representing the biblical grain measure used for the Passover barley offering / Sprig of three pomegranates, a traditional Jewish symbol of abundance and Temple association. Exceptional strike and surface, impeccable toning.
Struck during the First Jewish War against Rome, this silver shekel was produced after decades of mounting tensions between the Roman authorities and the population of Judaea. The immediate spark came in 66 AD, when the procurator Gessius Florus seized 16 talents of silver from the treasury of the Jerusalem Temple. Protests by the citizens were met with brutal repression and more than 3,000 Jews were killed. The revolt quickly spread across the city and countryside. Roman forces were expelled from Jerusalem, and an attempt by the Syrian legate to suppress the rebellion resulted in the destruction of Legio XII Fulminata. With Jerusalem briefly freed from Roman control, the Temple authorities began striking their own silver coinage, the first sovereign Jewish silver issues.
The mint was likely located within the Temple complex, using the large stockpiles of Tyrian shekels held in the treasury for their silver. Production was carefully controlled for weight, fineness, and inscriptions. The designs employ traditional Jewish symbols and political slogans such as “For the Freedom of Jerusalem” and “For the Redemption of Zion,” demonstrating the leaders’ clear use of coinage as a tool of national and religious messaging during the revolt. Coins were dated by year of the uprising, and this example belongs to Year 3 (68 to 69 AD), struck during the middle phase of the conflict when the rebel administration still maintained effective control of Jerusalem and the Temple mint.
A well-struck example, nicely centered with bold devices in high relief and strong definition throughout. Attractive light cabinet toning over surfaces that retain traces of original luster in the fields, giving the coin pleasing overall eye-appeal.
About the pedigree: Rabbi Victor Howard Weissberg was an American rabbi and collector known in numismatic circles for assembling an important collection of ancient coins, particularly those connected with Judaea and the Jewish world of antiquity. He served as a rabbi in the Chicago area and was deeply involved in Jewish cultural life. Along with his wife Tamar, he traveled widely, collected Jewish art, and pursued numismatics as a major scholarly interest.

ANCIENT JUDAEA, Jerusalem, AR sela, Bar Kokhba Revolt (132-135 AD), undated issue of Year 3 (AD 134/5), very rare, NGC Choice AU, strike 4/5, surface 4/5, overstruck. GBC 6, 6439. GBC 5, 1411. 11.85 grams. 25 mm. Simon in Paleo Hebrew, star above the façade of the Jerusalem Temple, the Ark of the Covenant visible within the entrance / For the Freedom of Jerusalem in Paleo Hebrew, lulav with etrog at left. Super eye appeal from amazing golden toning on obverse with hues of green and blue, light even toning on reverse, both sides quite attractive, well centered and sharply struck, with strong detail throughout. Overstruck on an earlier silver coin, the under-type on this example is essentially obliterated, with no identifiable traces remaining.
Struck during the Bar Kokhba Revolt against Roman rule, when Jewish forces briefly reestablished independent authority in Judea, this silver sela represents the highest denomination of the rebel coinage. Unlike the issues of the First Jewish War, all Bar Kokhba coins were overstruck on circulating Roman silver, chiefly tetradrachms and drachms of Antioch, Tyre, and Caesarea in Cappadocia, as well as Roman denarii. Lacking the time and resources to establish a full mint with smelting and casting, the rebels instead flattened existing coins and restruck them.
The types emphasize symbols of the Jerusalem Temple and its hoped restoration. The obverse shows the façade of the Temple with the Ark visible within the entrance, surmounted by a star often associated with the rebel leader Simon Bar Kokhba, whose name means Son of the Star. The reverse displays the lulav and etrog of the Feast of Tabernacles, reinforcing the central role of Jerusalem and its sacred traditions in the revolt’s message. Coins of the first two years of the revolt bear dated inscriptions, “Year One” or “Year Two of the Redemption of Israel,” while third year issues are undated.

Important silver folio (votive pedestal), ex-Atocha (1622), ex-Barfield.
Important silver folio (votive pedestal), ex-Atocha (1622), ex-Barfield. 242 grams. 4¼" tall. Labeled as a "folio" on the Treasure Salvors certificate, this mysterious item is similar to four examples in the Christie's 1988 Atocha sale listed as hollow, tapered, silver columns (all found tightly packed in wooden chests in the cargo area) with possible religious or ceremonial purpose, based on the fact that other examples in the Museo de America in Madrid were described as "pruebas en plata de aras votivas," or silver proofs of votive pedestals. In our opinion, "silver votive pedestal" would be the most sensible description since we do not know what "folio" refers to. This example is in great condition, cast in two halves in thick and solid silver, perfectly intact with all exterior symbols visible in relief (these in fact more ornate and mysterious than the Christie's examples), just a bit dark in color and with spots of encrustation here and there. From the Atocha (1622), with original Fisher tag and certificate 85A-A431, pedigreed to the Barfield Collection.

Impressive gold chain, 277 links, 91.2 grams, 21K, ex-Santa Margarita (1622). 37¾" long (without the custom clasp). An imposing but useful length of original chain consisting of solid, smooth, round links in high-grade gold, much heavier than it looks, in fact identical in design but even longer than a chain from the same wreck that sold in the 1988 Christie's auction, the unstated purpose of such chains (besides adornment) being a way to avoid heavy taxation on gold in colonial times. Excellent condition, a rare opportunity to own a certified and wearable piece of genuine 1622-Fleet gold treasure. (XRF tested at 21K gold.) NOTE: This chain comes with a custom-made (extra 2.46-gram) gold clasp for wearing. Featured on back cover of printed catalog. Six-link section of an exceptionally ornate gold belt, 106.72 grams total, fineness 21K, ex-Maravill
Six-link section of an exceptionally ornate gold belt, 106.72 grams total, fineness 21K, ex-Maravillas (1656), ex-Barfield, Marx Plate, Weller Plate. 9½" long. This fabulous artifact consists of six diamond-shaped links in ornate scrollwork of marvelously fine craftsmanship in high-karat gold (XRF tested at 21K), no doubt rather valuable even in its own time, in as-found condition coated here and there with light white coral, a significant showpiece that surely once belonged to Spanish royalty.
These six links are part of a long belt that was found in sections, starting with five links recovered during Bob Marx's work on the Maravillas in the summer of 1974 by diver Dick Anderson, who wrote about it (among other things) in his article "More Treasure from the World's Richest Wreck" in Argosy Magazine's 1976 Treasure Hunting Annual, which opens with a picture of him holding the five links (big smile, of course), a photo that was reproduced in Marx's 1979 book Diving for Adventure. In 1976, Anderson thought it was a bracelet, but examination of portraits of 17th Spanish royalty revealed that the links were just a section of a long belt, which Marx acknowledged in 1979. Marx's 1982 book Quest for Treasure shows a picture of that chain of five links too, with a comment that they did not find the entire belt, just those five links. Eventually, though, twenty-eight more links were found on the wreck, thus completing a thirty-three-link belt, as pictured in Marx's 1998 book Deep, Deeper, Deepest, captioned as "recovered by Marx." Each link is connected to the next by means of two easily removable stud-links with matching design, so that anyone could modify the length as needed. This six-link segment originates from a larger group of sixteen acquired by Bob "Frogfoot" Weller and later incorporated into a private collection.
It speaks to the importance of this artifact that various forms of the whole belt are pictured in at least four of Bob Marx's books (and one of Weller's). We encourage potential bidders to consider the stature of this piece as a sort of "Queens Jewels" like what you see in Royal museums around the world; we are all extremely fortunate to have the chance to own such a thing today. From the Maravillas (1656), pedigreed to the Barfield Collection, plated on page 39 of Bob Marx's book Diving for Adventure (1979), page 236 of his book Quest for Treasure (1982), photo-plate opposite page 27 of his book Sunken Treasure: How to Find It, page 322 of his book Deep, Deeper, Deepest (1998), and page 160 of Bob "Frogfoot" Weller's book Galleon Alley (2001), with photo-certificates, accompanied by a copy of Argosy Magazine's 1976 Treasure Hunting Annual containing Dick Anderson's article.

Elegant rectangular-link gold chain, 23.86 grams total, fineness 20K, ex-Maravillas (1656), ex-Weller, ex-Barfield. 22" long; each link 6 mm x 4 mm. Not your typical "money chain" (a 17th century form of tax evasion), this is a dainty chain of unique design, consisting of 146 flat, thin, rectangular links of rich-colored, high-karat gold (XRF tested at 20K), once part of a 66"-long chain found on the wreck in 1979-80 and divided into three necklaces of 22" each, with two links at each end joined to make a sort of clasp (no modern material), not overly secure but functional, thereby making a wearable artifact from one of the richest treasure wrecks to be salvaged in our time. From the Maravillas (1656), with photo-certificate from Bob "Frogfoot" Weller, pedigreed to the Barfield Collection.

Gold-plated silver Columbus statue for religious processionals, ex-1715 Fleet, ex-Trabucco.
Gold-plated silver Columbus statue for religious processionals, ex-1715 Fleet. approx. 17 inches tall and 2.8 lbs (total) Research and careful reassembly (per the accompanying photo) revealed that this fascinating artifact, consisting of three main parts and several small pieces (as found), the main part filled with encrustation, is a three-tiered gold vermeil sacramental with Columbus statue at top of a type used in religious processions in the streets of Spanish colonial cities in the Americas. The use of Columbus on a New World church relic is not unusual, as the Spanish culture revered him as the original vehicle for spreading Christianity in the Americas. XRF results: mostly around 30% to 50% gold silver, with parts as high as 67% gold and 31% silver, but some parts as low as 98% silver and 1% gold. From the 1715 Fleet, with Sedwick photo-certificate from 2008 and Karen McKee certificate from 2007, pedigreed to the Trabucco Treasure Auction '93 (January 1993).

As mentioned in his book Pieces of Eight, Kip Wagner's Real Eight Co. was badly in need of money when investor Ken Parker came forward with the idea to melt down 4,000 oz. of silver cobs from the 1715 Fleet and turn them into popular fountain pens (limited to 4,821 units) to sell at $75 each (triple the normal retail price for their pens), a small fortune in 1965 for anyone but wealthy executives. But it is not just the pen that makes these collectibles valuable: You have to have the whole package, with the box and certificates and booklets. This offering has it all, including the green-felt pouch that is often missing. The pen itself shows the customary Parker 75 crosshatch pattern on the outside but with the all-important "SPANISH TREASURE FLEET - 1715" embossed around the center and also with the oM mintmark for Mexico and the Mexican eagle in the gold accents at either end. (For more information, see http://www.parker75.com.). With original hinged box that shows a map on top, a diagram of a galleon inside, inspection certificate/guarantee 79914 , small booklet, and a notarized certificate with Kip Wagner signature.

Impressive bowl and lid exhibiting a blue floral design under glaze with gold overlays and brightly colored enamel butterflies and flowers added, a rare intact piece from the East Indiaman Götheborg whose cargo was laden with ceramics from China. Even the accompanying letter has antique value, handwritten in cursive on aged paper, stating "Recovered (with others) in the year 1875 from the wreck of the Barque 'Göteborg,' in the East India Merchant Service which ran aground at a place now called Göteborgegrundet (coast of Sweden) in the year 1745." The letter goes on to say the artifact was "Recovered by divers after it had been submerged 130 years" (i.e., 1875) and "therefore nearly 150 years old," which establishes that the letter was written ca. 1895. Modern salvage of the ship took place in the 1980s, and a Swedish replica of the ship was launched in June 2003, but we have no evidence that any other artifacts from this wreck are in private hands.
