COLOMBIA, Bogotá, large copper medal, dated 1828 (struck 1829), Bolívar saved from assassination, unique in this metal, NGC MS 63 BN, finest and only example in NGC census. Urdaneta Braschi-I.A.12 (for silver). 28.85 grams. 44 mm. The only specimen known in copper (XRF tested at 93%), an off-metal striking of a medal normally encountered in silver (about twelve to fifteen known) and rarely in gold (about two known), a rare and historically important medal. Obverse with bust of Bolívar right, set atop a pedestal; reverse with all-seeing eye within radiant pyramid above L.D.P. / SALVO LA VIDA / DEL LIBERTADOR / SIMON BOLIVAR / LA NOCHE DEL 25 DE SEP. / DE 1828. Well preserved, with faint blue hues and highly reflective surfaces that provide outstanding eye-appeal despite a few edge-cracks, no doubt due to the greater hardness of copper. Until recently, this rare and celebrated medal, commonly known as the Septembrina in reference to the September assassination attempt, was believed to have been produced in Venezuela, as stated on the NGC label (which also calls this piece bronze instead of copper). However, a presentation by Carlos Bacalao at the 2019 NUMISCOL convention in Bogotá demonstrated that the medal was in fact made in Colombia, and that its dies are preserved in the Museo Nacional de Bogotá. Furthermore, forthcoming scholarly articles have linked the meaning of L.D.P. to a Masonic lodge, consistent with the symbolism of the all-seeing eye in a radiant pyramid, rather than the traditional attributions to La Divina Providencia or to Bolívar’s aide L. D. Palacios. Please use this link to verify the certification number

PHILIPPINES (U.S. administration), San Francisco Mint, 1 peso, 1905-S, straight serif, rare, PCGS MS62. KM-168; Allen-16.06a. The 1905-S straight serif peso is one of the rarest variants in its series and has long been considered a key piece in any serious Philippines peso collection. The triangular top of the 1 in the date is clear and denotes this important variety from the much more common curved serif type. Rare in any form, Mint State examples of this variety appear very infrequently on the market. Rich red and blue toning drapes the semi-lustrous surfaces; while close examination of the fields does show very minor marks, the overall appearance is a bit better than the numerical grade infers. Though with some problems, this Honduras rarity is difficult to acquire in any condition and we can account for no major auction appearances over the past decade.

This photographic proof from the American Bank Note Company archives shows the design process for the 1913-dated peso plata note and its later iterations as an una lempira note with a pasted-on denomination strip along the bottom. PERU, Lima, Banco la Providencia, 1 sol, 1-1-1875, serial 41903, brown back color, with 1875 date stamp on front and back, very rare, PMG VF 25. Pick-S227a (type of). The Banco la Providencia was Peru's first private bank, established in 1862 and issuing notes first in 1863, then later in 1867 through 1877. While the obverse design of this note with vignettes of Charity and Commerce at left and caduceus at right matches the Pick catalog for Pick-S227a, the back design is brown while the Pick catalog only lists green for the back; further down, the catalog notes that archive records indicate two back color varieties for S227 and S228 (the 2 soles). This is seemingly the first issued example known with a brown color variety. The date on the note, 1-1-1875, is also not listed in Pick and is much later than the two dates given in Pick. Some modest circulation and pinholes are seen though the design on both sides is still quite bold, and a small annotation is seen in the upper left margin. PUERTO RICO (under Spain), Tesorería Nacional, 25 pesos, 4-5-1813, serial 53. Pick-unlisted. About 8¼" x 12¾". A large, uniface fiscal document numbered 34 promising to pay Don Francisco Puig y Gibert the sum of 25 pesos in provisional money one year from the date of May 4, 1813, with interest at an annual rate of 6% (basically a 19th-century promissory note or certificate of deposit), signed by Treasurer Juan Patiño and Accountant José Bacener and countersigned (V.o B.o) by Ramírez. Rare and important as effectively the first currency of Puerto Rico, issued while Ferdinand VII was king of Spain. Nice AU with great ink color and paper quality, a few small holes in the left margin.
