CUBA (under Spain), cast silver proclamation medal, Ferdinand VI, 1747, Guanabacoa, unique GVNA variety. Rosa-221; Herrera-41 var; Betts-344 var; Ulex-2459 var; Medina-23 var. 10.80 grams. 28 mm. A crudely cast, half dollar-sized silver medal featuring a fantasy portrait of the new king within legend FERNANDO.VI.D.G.HISPAN.REX on obverse and arms of Guanabacoa inside legend SANTIAGO DE TORES.GVNA with date •1747• at bottom on reverse, a bit worn and oxidized (Fine overall), with patches of copper and light olive toning, applied reeding on edge, one of two versions known, this one believed to be unique. This piece is identical to the hand-drawn illustration for number 221 in Alejandro Rosa’s 1895 work, Aclamaciones de Monarcas Católicos en el Nuevo Mundo, which is different from the other version of this medal listed as number 41 in Adolfo Herrera’s 1882 publication, Medallas de Proclamaciones y Juras de los Reyes de España (described in Betts, and illustrated in Medina and in the 1908 Hess catalog of the Ulex Collection). There are slight differences in the relief and execution of the arms, but the most recognizable aspect is the misspelling GVNA in place of GVANA with ligate AN in the legend. Both versions appear to be the same diameter, but Medina quotes a weight of 15 grams while Ulex states 5.5 grams (which seems erroneous). The present lot is 11 grams—same as the weight given in Rosa (and same diameter). Although little known today, the cabinet of proclamation medals formed by Alejandro Rosa in the late 1800s was among the greatest ever assembled, containing such landmarks as the unique gold proclamation of Ferdinand VI of Mexico (1747) and one of the few known Florida medals of Charles IV (1789). It is intriguing to think this lot could very well be the piece from Rosa’s collection (impossible to confirm from a drawing). This medal’s surfaces show expected old casting traits, and XRF analysis confirms a proper mid-18th-century alloy of approximately 85% silver and 14% copper with traces of gold, lead, and zinc. Nevertheless, due to its cast manufacture and unique design not represented in standard references, this medal is beyond the limitations of certification companies like NGC and PCGS and cannot be put into a certified holder until it is better understood. Now offered at auction for the first time, this medal’s uniqueness and historical significance make it a true numismatic treasure for connoisseurs who appreciate that pieces of this caliber represent important opportunities, even when not fully documented or certified.

VARIOUS COUNTRIES, Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., representative vignette sample book with 104 engraved
VARIOUS COUNTRIES, Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., representative vignette sample book with 104 engraved proofs, ca. 1856–1903, extremely rare, ex-Rocha. Unique and complete original presentation album of engraved banknote vignettes by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., London, one of the foremost security printers of the nineteenth century, known for banknotes, postage stamps, and stock certificates. Founded by Henry Bradbury in 1850, the firm began engraving banknotes in 1856 and was later acquired by the American Bank Note Company in 1903. This album was the company’s official sample and presentation book, carried by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. representatives around the world to exhibit the quality of their engraving work to governments and central banks. The album was used in Argentina during the late nineteenth century in connection with proposals for national banknote production. It was then acquired by Doctor Rocha, the governor of the province of Buenos Aires from 1881 to 1884. Much later, it was sold as lot # 787 in C.C. Gaona's auction in Buenos Aires of the Dr. Rocha library held from September 14 to 18, 1964, where it was described as including a £10 note at the front, with an extensive assortment of engraved vignettes, gilded page borders, and fine leather binding. Bound in original gilt leather covers with fully gilded page edges, complete with 104 engraved vignette proofs, each mounted on a separate page with its original tissue guard. Page size 21 × 14 centimeters, approximately 8.2 × 5.5 inches. The first page presents a beautifully engraved £10 specimen note, followed by a comprehensive sequence of vignettes depicting important historical figures, inventors, explorers, allegorical scenes, and heraldic designs from various continents. The vignettes represent designs prepared for banknotes issued in numerous countries, including Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Persia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Ceylon, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Cuba. Each image is a steel-plate proof of exceptional sharpness and artistry, showing the precision and aesthetic quality that made Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. one of the most respected engravers of the nineteenth century. Condition is very good, the pages strong and bright with light stains and typical foxing, impressions bold, vignettes clear and in excellent condition, binding tight, gilt decoration bright, minor handling only. No other complete Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. vignette album of this kind is known to us. Only isolated individual vignettes have appeared on the market. This example is believed to be unique. Pedigreed to the Dr. Rocha Collection and subsequently sold in C.C. Gaona's Buenos Aires public auction of September 14–18, 1964, Lot 787. NOTE: Please use this link to see the full content of this book * This PDF presents photographs of each vignette featured in the book. In addition, images of the banknotes on which these vignettes would have been used are included for illustrative purposes only; they are representative images and are not included in the lot. The book itself contains only the vignettes and the English banknote depicted on the cover.
