Brilliant Mint State, deeply struck with minor die-crack on reverse, host data clearly visible in rims, most notably the date. To commemorate the new Constitution of the Province of Buenos Aires in separation from the Confederation led by Urquiza, medals like this one were struck and sold on site at the Plaza de Mayo using whatever coins were supplied by the public, in various metals, but primarily Bolivian 8 soles as the most commonly used coin at the time.

Choice luster, very natural-looking and pretty, the rarer of just two denominations in a one-year type (highly sought by numismatists) struck by Romanian-Jewish gold-prospector Julius Popper using gold dust found on the beach of El Páramo in the Patagonian peninsula. Popper's expedition, under the name of Gold-Washing Company of the South (Lavaderos de Oro del Sud), achieved a sort of autonomy, with its own army and coins and postage stamps, as well as a notorious "wild west" atmosphere replete with crime and abuse of natives. The “patacón” was Argentina’s crown-sized silver coin of the late 19th century, struck 1881–1883 at the Buenos Aires mint. The 1883 issue saw heavy circulation during a period of economic strain, leaving few survivors in high grade. Very broad, thin flan with very choice full cross-and-tressure (well-detailed castles and lions) and choice full shield (very slightly doubled), much legend including full date, also nicely toned, just rather underweight from corrosion, still quite eye-catching for its width alone, and well pedigreed. Twenty years ago this issue was considered Philip III and struck in Cartagena, but research by Blanton (see pedigree article) and Jorge Proctor have shown it was struck in the name of Philip IV at the Bogotá mint (somewhat corrected in more recent references). Rich, original, steely blue-gray toning over lustrous surfaces offering exceptional eye appeal for the type, a perfect combination of rarity and quality, with well-detailed pillars-and-globes and crowned arms showing no weakness anywhere but with distinctive planchet flaw over the E in FERDND, giving this example a unique identity among the very few known survivors. Extremely rare as the first year of Colombian pillar dollars and the only issue under Ferdinand VI. By royal order of 1751, the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint of the Viceroyalty of New Granada was incorporated into the Royal Treasury and directed to adopt the pillar-type coinage with mintmark NR, issued under assayers Joaquín Burgos and Victoriano del Valle. Implementation took years, however, and the dollar-sized coins were not struck until 1759. Restrepo estimates that fifteen examples exist, but only about half of those have hit the market in recent decades, all highly prized as among the rarest and most important coins of the Colombian colonial series. The present lot is a magnificent example of the first Colombian pillar dollar, and a major opportunity to acquire a cornerstone of Spanish-American numismatics. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, pattern 10 reales in solid silver, 1855, reeded edge, extremely rare, NGC MS 62, ex-Whittier (cover), ex-Byrne (both stated on label), KM Plate. KM-Pn1; Estrella-81. 26.86 grams. Choice prooflike luster and extremely sharp and frosty details, with minute bagmarks all over but choice in strike and eye appeal. This important silver pattern represents a proposal for the first crown-sized coinage of the Dominican Republic, struck just eleven years after that country regained independence in 1844. The denomination of 10 reales was unusual for the period, recalling the famous Santo Domingo issue of Charles and Johanna of the early 1500s, while most contemporary Latin American countries were adhering to the Spanish 8 reales standard until shifting to the decimal peso. A circulating crown would not appear in the Dominican Republic until the 5 francos of 1891 (see next lot), making this pattern a historic precursor. This piece has long been regarded as one of the great rarities of Dominican numismatics, described in Ray Byrne as "the rarest coin of this island" and in Whittier as "one of the great rarities of the entire Latin American Numismatic series." It was originally cataloged in error as silver-plated copper (Byrne) and then as solid silver (Whittier), which specific gravity testing by NGC has confirmed. The NGC census currently records three silver examples (the other two being MS 63 and MS 64, which should be tested to confirm they are solid silver), along with two in silvered copper (one in Proof) and one in copper, but only the present coin and two others have appeared at auction since 2005. A lovely coin of the highest rarity and importance, both as the first proposed crown of the Dominican Republic and as one of the rarest patterns of the Caribbean. Following the failed experiment with elegant copper-nickel coinage from Paris in 1869-71 (see lot 1089), the Tegucigalpa mint issued bronze coinage that devolved in 1895 to dismal productions from muled and modified old dies, this being an example of KM-35 (obv) and 40 (rev), always seen in low grade as here (Fair with corroded surfaces), this example also with interesting variation in color of the copper content, one of reportedly only eight to ten known.

A very rare date of this small, center-holed bronze issue, with only a few major auction appearances in the last decade. Struck at the London Mint during the early years of Hong Kong’s coinage, this type saw very limited production, its modest mintage swiftly supplanted by later issues. An especially attractive example of this historic issue, the first dated 8 reales struck at Mexico City in the new pillar design, a type that became the model for Spanish colonial coinage worldwide, this one boldly struck with full globes, sharp crown and pillars, and complete legends, the shield side particularly well detailed with crisp castles and lions, highlighted by superb multicolored toning over strong underlying luster that gives the coin exceptional visual appeal, in fact better in appearance than many Mint State specimens of the type. Yonaka and Gilboy record only two die varieties for this date, this being the scarcer with an extra moulding below the acanthus above the right pillar. This coin also has a distinguished pedigree to one of the most important auctions of Spanish colonial coins by type, the Emilio M. Ortiz Collection sold by Swiss Bank Corporation in 1991. According to the NGC and PCGS census, this piece ranks among the top five by grade for the date; while not the highest numerically, its superb eye appeal places it among the finest known examples, arguably the finest 1732 pillar dollar known outside of Mint State grade. Exceptionally hard to find in numeric grade, this choice example showing full (but doubled) assayer, mintmark, and denomination, sharply detailed full shield and cross, plus small portions of legend, all very lightly toned and with traces of luster, typical die variety for this assayer lacking the arms of Aragon in the shield, one of very few known and the only one straight-graded by NGC. PANAMA, cob ½ real, Philip II, assayer P-M, quadrants of cross transposed, extremely rare, NGC mint error AU 50 / flipover double struck. Proctor-unl (pmB/B); S-AP2; Cal-133; KM-1. 1.52 grams. Broad flan with bold and sharp full cross-lions-castles, above which is a full monogram with very clear AP to left and P to right due to an exceptionally strong and dramatic flipover double-strike (also rotated 45 degrees), the other side with most of monogram showing bold P to left and M below in addition to bold (PHIL)IPVS followed by upside-down D in legend next to a fainter impression of the cross side, the surfaces all smooth and attractively toned, lacking the typical corrosion typically seen on Panama cobs, hence even rarer as straight-graded by NGC (one of only three in the census, bettered only by an AU 53). Flipover double-strike errors are quite rare (unique in this case), but especially with so much of both sides visible, here in fact showing all the mintmark and assayer elements that are visible only piecemeal on the very few other examples known. For the specialist we note this is an unrecorded combination with a reverse die that was previously only known for subsequent assayer oX. Smallest denomination in a complete matched proof set with the next three lots (KM-PS1, only twelve sets issued), the first official coinage of the newly independent nation of Panama in 1904, each coin struck to proof standards at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia under the direction of Charles E. Barber, one of the most important American engravers of the era, featuring a bold portrait of Vasco Núñez de Balboa on obverse and sharply defined national coat of arms on reverse, a perfect combination of elegant design with high technical quality. Each coin in the set displays deep mirrored fields overlain with original, undisturbed rainbow toning in vibrant colors on both sides, never cleaned or altered, the result of decades of natural aging, as this set has stayed intact since the time of issue, reflecting its importance as an original presentation, each coin now certified separately to cater to the growing interest among collectors to build competitive registry sets in top-tier holders. This PF 65 5c, with particularly strong and colorful toning and scattered die-polish lines, is tied with one other for second finest in the NGC census behind a single PF 66. PANAMA, struck at the Philadelphia mint, proof 50 centésimos, 1904, very rare, NGC PF 63. KM-5. With particularly sharp and deeply struck details enhanced by extra-vivid and contrasting toning, this is the largest and most iconic denomination and the highlight of this complete matched proof set with the previous three two lots (KM-PS1, only twelve sets issued). This 50c, with faint wispy lines in fields (under the toning) and a modicum of tiny handling marks on highest points, is one of only three in the NGC census, tied with one other for second finest behind a single PF 66. PANAMA, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, copper-nickel 2½ centésimos, 1918, very rare, NGC MS 63 (Richard Stuart Collection Label), finest known. KM-7.2. Choice auburn color with very few faint bagmarks, the finest by far (next grade at NGC being AU 58) of just seven confirmed examples, listed in KM as "unauthorized issue." According to Panamanian numismatic researcher Jorge Proctor, Panama's Law 62 of December 1, 1917, specified authorization to strike 25,000 balboas’ worth of coins in 2½ and 5 centésimos de balboa, and if all were 2½ centésimos, then it would have been one million struck, a mintage figure often reported with a footnote that all were melted in June 1918 (as in KM). However, according to actual mint records from Philadelphia, there is no evidence the coins were ever struck in such a quantity, or in fact at all beyond a handful of sample specimens like this one. PANAMA, Canal Zone, denomination set of six Palo Seco leprosarium tokens from 1919: dollar, NGC XF 45; 50 cents, NGC XF 40; 25 cents, NGC XF 45; 10 cents, NGC VF 35; 5 cents, NGC XF 45; 1 cent, NGC AU 50, extremely rare, NGC, ex-McFadden. KM-Tn1 to Tn6; MGM-700 to 705. All more or less toned, with minor marks only on the four highest denominations in aluminum, while the two smallest denominations in brass are a bit better, the 1c in fact with traces of luster in crevices. Struck in 1919 for the Palo Seco leper colony on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal Zone, these tokens were issued as restricted currency, redeemable only within the colony to prevent outside circulation. Their denominations directly mirrored the U.S. dollar system, reinforcing the economic dependence of the Canal Zone on U.S. currency at the time. The 1c and 5c have square perforations while the higher denominations from 10c through 1 Dollar show round perforations. Obverses bear the legend a PALO SECO / CANAL ZONE, while reverses read REDEEMABLE FOR / [denomination word / numeral] / IN MERCHANDISE. The lower values of 1c and 5c are scarce in higher preservation. The 10c is very scarce, with most known examples damaged or heavily worn. The 25c is rare, with fewer than twenty specimens believed extant. The 50c is almost as elusive as the Dollar, as 830 of its 1,000 struck were officially destroyed in 1955, leaving fewer than fifteen known. The Dollar is the centerpiece of the series, with 867 of its 1,000 pieces destroyed the same year, leaving only about twelve survivors. Complete token sets are almost never seen, and the importance of this one is further enhanced by the fact that all the pieces have been straight-graded by NGC. This combination of rarity and grade for a full set makes it a unique opportunity to secure the entire Palo Seco Canal Zone series, which stands as a tangible reflection of U.S. monetary influence and Canal Zone history as well as early 20th-century leper colony protocol. Bright and lustrous, with faint spotting on the nickel brass-plated steel ring and faint hairlines on the nickel-plated steel interior, otherwise lacking any wear or marks. While bimetallic 2 balboas like this one were anticipated in 2011, their circulation was canceled for unknown reasons, and sources indicate that only a few dozen samples like this one exist (not noted as a pattern or trial on the label).

PARAGUAY, War of the Triple Alliance, 2 soles, half cut of a Potosí, Bolivia, 4 soles, without countermark (1865-70), rare. Pratt-MC2. 4.67 grams. About Fine with traces of toning, sharply cut edge, heavy scratches on reverse, which shows clear 4S denomination and Potosí mintmark in legend, LIBRE POR LA visible on the Bolívar side. Cut Bolivian coins like this were created and used by merchants for making change during the War, which was a land dispute pitting Paraguay against the "Triple Alliance" of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, who were the ultimate victors.

An extremely rare type following a September 30, 1840, decree that required the fineness “21 Qs” to appear in the legend in response to debasement problems. While a relatively substantial mintage of 8 escudos took place in Cuzco from 1840 to 1845, the only years of 8E mintage in post-federation Lima were 1841 (unlisted in KM) and 1850 (the latter also quite rare). By our records, only two other examples of the 1841 are known: one plated in Calicó's La Onza (2004) and the other permanently impounded in the Banco del Peru Museum. Significantly missing from all the classic collections like Fonrobert, Peltzer, Salbach and Ulex, as well as more recent collections like Caballero, Eliasberg Lissner, Pittman and Sellschopp, this important trophy is among the rarest Peruvian gold coins of the 19th century. PUERTO RICO (under Spain), Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Puerto Rico, copper-nickel-zinc fare token, MDCCCLXXXVIII (1888), ex-Roehrs. 23.98 grams. Large token with reeded edge, hand-punched on one side with COMPANIA DE / LOS FERROCARRI / LES DE PTO.RICO above AHORRA TIEMPO (“save time”), and on the other side the date in Roman numerals with quartets of o's above and below, likely made from a contemporary medal, as suggested by the alloy and construction, and issued as a fare token for the Puerto Rico railway system, which opened in 1891, the earlier date seen here best explained as commemorative or anticipatory, tied to the concession rather than the actual operation. XRF analysis confirms a copper-zinc alloy with only minor traces of silver, consistent with base-metal token manufacture. Toned in the lettering and with light surface marks but well preserved overall. Unlisted in all token references and the first of its kind we have handled, an important relic of Puerto Rican transportation history. Bold strike with choice full shield and cross-and-tressure on a broad flan with nearly complete legends, bold full mintmark above assayer /\ (like an A but missing the horizontal bar) with traces of under-assayer IB, an unlisted over-assayer in this denomination (known in 4R), clear bottom half of date despite off-center strike, deeply toned all over, exceptionally well struck and well preserved for the type. (Note: The label notes “(1650-6)MD A,” but the date and over-assayer are there.) This piece is from a rare and historically significant series of mainland issues struck soon after the Potosí Mint scandal of 1647–49, which led Spain to boost minting at home to restore confidence in its coinage. In addition to greater production at major mints like Madrid, several minor mints were re-opened to handle tons of silver from recalled and melted coinage. Thick flan (smaller diameter than previous lot) with full and bold assayer /\ punched over a clear V (unlisted for this date), bold full shield and cross, the latter just off-center enough to allow for a nearly full date, AXF with deep toning throughout, another prime example of increased production at the Madrid mint following the Potosí mint scandal.

SPAIN, Toledo, cob 8 reales, Philip IV, 1651 Y, rare. Cal-1679; KM-101. 27.05 grams. Very bold full date at 1-3 o'clock outside the full cross, full shield (off-center) with bold full denomination VIII to right inside an equally bold PHILIPVS, some doubling, VF with contrasting natural toning. Along with Madrid (see previous two lots), the Toledo mint ramped up production in the early 1650s to handle melted Potosí silver and increase output in order to offset reduced shipments from Peru. These rare coins are now recognized as historically important to collectors in the Americas.

SPAIN, Valladolid, cob 8 reales, Philip IV, (1651), assayer not visible (stylized F), very rare. Cal-1690; KM-134.6. 24.81 grams. High-grade example (AU) with very light toning and faint luster, flat in the peripheries, with natural edge-split, but with choice full crown and shield and cross-lions-castles that are recognizable by style as Valladolid. The Valladolid mint struck these coins only in 1651 with a distinctive F assayer-mark that looks an E with crossbar extended to left, a direct product of the silver shortage following the Potosí scandal, when several Spanish mints briefly increased output using melted and refined silver. A very rare and desirable peninsular type, seldom encountered and highly prized by advanced collectors.

SPAIN, Madrid, cob 4 reales, Philip IV, 1651, assayer /\, unique. Cal-unl (Type 269); KM-132.3. 13.83 grams. Lustrous AU with well-detailed and well-centered full shield showing bold assayer to left appearing as an A without crossbar (unlisted in references, but we note that /\ over IB is listed for 1650/49), bold full cross (off-center) with complete 51 of date visible, no toning except for a couple dark spots. Like the previous lots, this was struck during the brief increase in production at Madrid to counteract a coinage shortage due to the Potosí mint scandal, this example exceptional for its detail and preservation.

SPAIN, Granada, cob ½ real, Philip IV, (1651) N, very rare. Cal-544; KM-86.1. 1.19 grams. Full monogram with bold G-N below, also full but off-center cross, toned XF+ with light surface corrosion. This is a very rare one-year type, the Granada mint one of several specifically put back into service in 1651 to alleviate silver coinage shortage due to the Potosí mint scandal. The rarity and importance of these mainland cobs are just beginning to become evident in the American market, this specific issue touted in Spain as "two known" even though the reference books give it values in several grades.

SPAIN, Madrid, cob ½ real, Philip IV, 1651, rare. Cal-551; KM-86.3. 2.01 grams. Bold upper half of cross with full 51 of date to left, full crown and monogram (distinctive style for this mint), attractively toned XF. This mint was barely making coins in this denomination when called upon to counteract the coin shortage caused by the Potosí mint scandal, the connection now becoming important to the greater American collector market.

SPAIN, Segovia, milled 8 reales, Philip IV, 1651 I/R, vertical mintmark with five arches, unique, NGC XF 45. Cal-unl (Type 345); KM-111. Typically broad flan (extending past the outer borders) with choice full details, attractively toned over natural surfaces, with strong eye appeal for the grade. The date 1651 appears to have something under the 5—possibly a 3 but certainly not a 4—while the assayer I is clearly punched over a partially erased R, an unlisted combination in references. In addition to cobs, mainland Spanish production was increased in milled coins struck by roller press at the Real Ingenio in Segovia due to the need for new coinage following the Potosí mint scandal, making for coins like this that combine historical rarity with technical excellence in choice preservation.
