Immense Sawankhalok stoneware jar, intact, ex-San Diego (1600), with official paperwork from the Philippines. 24" tall, 16" at shoulders. These jars were made in Thailand between 1350 to 1500, when the kilns were abruptly abandoned. Most Sawankhalok ware was made for export and many have been found in graves in the Philippines. In December 1600, the hastily converted Spanish merchant ship San Diego was sunk by the Dutch after a single shot at Fortune Island, Philippines. She was overloaded and powerless to fire her cannon as her gunports were below the waterline. A July 1994 National Geographic article written by her salvor, Franck Goddio, tells the story of finding the San Diego and recovering 570 jars, among other cargo. The stoneware jar in our auction, light brown in color mottled with tan spots and black specks, is typical of others found and either legally exported or residing in Manila's National Museum. Around the neck are three small loops used for sealing or picking up the jar along with the remnants of a fourth loop long since broken off. One of the largest jars we've ever handled, a stunning display piece to be sure. FRAGILE - PICK UP IN PERSON ONLY. From the San Diego (1600), with notebook of letters, invoices, and export paperwork from the Philippines and retailer certificate, as well as pages from the National Geographic article that describes the wreck (July 1994).

De Munt der Graaven van Holland [The Coins of the Counts of Holland], by Kornelis Van Alkemade, 1700
De Munt der Graaven van Holland [The Coins of the Counts of Holland], by Kornelis Van Alkemade, 1700. 12¾" x 8¼". An important work of early coin drawings, particularly useful to collectors of colonial Santo Domingo coinage as it contains a plate drawing of the extremely rare 10 reales coin of Charles-Joanna, a redrawing from an earlier work by Plantin and Parijs in 1576. According to John Kleeberg in his paper "The 10 Reales of Santo Domingo," the Plantin and Parijs drawing lends credence to the existence of the coin as a genuine product of the Santo Domingo Mint. As Kleeberg notes, Alkemade's purpose was to publish a book about gold and silver medals (and coins) of the counts of Holland, so he included the 10 reales of Santo Domingo because it had been issued under the Spanish rulers Charles I and (his mother) Joanna, with Charles also being a Count of Holland. Fine, (24) 192pp. (8), worn leather hardcover binding.

The Quicksilver Galleons, by Pedro J. Borrell B., undated (1983), signed by Captain Tracy Bowden (who appears on the cover). 8½" x 7½". This rare book is the quintessential reference on the shipwrecks Guadalupe and Tolosa, sunk off the Dominican Republic in 1724 and salvaged by Tracy Bowden and his team in the late 1970s, the wrecks nicknamed "The Quicksilver Galleons" for the fact that they were carrying a cargo of mercury destined for the colonial mints to extract pure gold from ore. Almost every page features coins and/or artifacts from these wrecks, and the full-color cover features an underwater photo of the Captain himself pouring mercury from a bottle into a plate on the actual shipwreck site of the Tolosa. New condition, 122 pp., soft cover, black-and-white photos, Library of Congress number 84-125863.

Naufragio en Inés de Soto - Un hallazgo de cuatro siglos, compiled by CARISUB, S.A., 1998, inscribed by the Captain of CARISUB. 10¼" x 8½". In 1992, a Cuban underwater archeological research company discovered a sixteenth-century Spanish shipwreck off a Key called Inés de Soto, northwest of Havana. Although the exact date and identity of the wreck have not been established, it contained gold and silver bars, coins, and other archeological pieces consistent with a timeline around the latter part of the 1500s. Many Charles-Joanna coins from Mexico City were on board, from the earliest assayer, Francisco del Rincón (assayer R) to the latest assayer of the period, Bernardo de Oñate (assayer O). The majority of coins were from assayer O and his predecessor Luis Rodríguez (assayer L). Surprisingly, there were 53 Rincón 3 reales found. Also recovered were several Charles-Joanna pieces from Santo Domingo. The inventory of this vessel is very well detailed along with photos of representative coins. There are numerous photographs and drawings, and the book gives a very thorough account of what was found and its historical context. This is an extremely rare and important book, virtually non-existent outside of Cuba. VF, 255 pp., soft cover, color photos throughout, inscribed in Spanish in red ink on title page by Captain "Rafa."
