PERU, Lima, cob 4 reales Royal (galano), 1746 V, unique, ex-Ponte, ex-Sellschopp, ex-Ortiz. S-L22; KM-unl; Cal-1022. 13.44 grams. By this last date of Philip V, Lima silver cobs had entered into a nadir of aesthetic quality, yet this lot proves the ability still existed to make beautiful coins, as its design is perfectly struck—well centered and even, with practically no doubling—and it is also beautifully preserved with lovely old toning and no hole or damage of any kind. Remarkably, it also shows some legend, including parts of the king's name, and since no examples are known for the next king (Ferdinand VI), this is officially the last date of issue, fittingly well pedigreed in our time (its whereabouts prior to Sellschopp unknown, as unlisted in Pellicer i Bru), now surely destined for a home in another great collection. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and to the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988, lot 247) and to the Emilio Ortiz Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1991, lot 133).

PERU, Lima, cob 4 reales, 1752 R, denomination 8/4, unique, ex-Ponte. S-L23; KM-unl (43 for type); Cal-365. 13.51 grams. Good central detail (which is all you can ask for in this period, particularly this final year of Lima cobs) with clear date, full denomination showing faint but certain 8/4 (an unrecorded error), most of assayer, deeply toned VF with natural surfaces (no corrosion). We cannot find any record of Lima cob 4R 1752 prior to when Sr. Ponte acquired this coin in 2007. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.

PERU, Lima, cob 2 reales Royal (galano), 1748 V, unique, ex-Ponte, ex-Ortiz, ex-Faistauer. S-L22a; KM-unl; Cal-259. 6.58 grams. Much like the 4R 1746 above (lot 509), this superb piece is a far cry from its non-Royal contemporaries, in fact choice for any Royal, with impeccable depth and evenness of strike, its slight lack of centering on the cross side fortuitously allowing a full second date and parts of the king's name FERNANDVS, with gorgeous cabinet toning from several generations of care by famous collectors (per its pedigree), its inevitable hole at top of the pillars side no doubt inflicted well before modern appreciation (perhaps even at the moment of manufacture). In short, this is a famous and important trophy, the last date of Lima 2R Royals and one of the finest of all periods. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and to the Emilio Ortiz Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1991, lot 201) and to the Faistauer Collection (Christensen auction of December 1981, lot 854).

BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer M, legend DEI,G,ISPANIARVM, very rare, ex-Ponte. S-P2; KM-5.1; Cal-668. 27.06 grams. Choice AU- with faint toning on glossy surfaces, 100% full and well-struck interiors and nearly full legends as well, enabling confirmation that it is the variety with legend DEI G instead of D G and original Seville-style lions (missing in Sellschopp and Paoletti), a great piece for die study and quite rare as among the first 8R made at the mint after Rincón. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.

BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer L (1st period), denomination o-VIII punched over P-M to right, legend DEI,G,ISPANIARVM, very rare, ex-Ponte, ex-Karon, ex-Sellschopp (Title Page Plate), Grunthal-Sellschopp Plate. S-P3; KM-5.1; Cal-670. 27.33 grams. Very broad flan with most of legends bold, particularly below the choice full shield where you can see a full DEI G versus D G, the denomination to right clearly punched over a former P-M (which Sellschopp and Paoletti did not notice, although the latter acknowledged that "L engraved his initial over the primitive M," most likely in reference to lower-denomination coins), this being only the third example we have seen (the others being Paoletti's number 52 and Sedwick Auction 21 lot 832, all three with different reverse dies). The cross is also very choice, with well-detailed full lions and castles, plus the whole coin has the loveliest toning imaginable, the best you can expect for its XF grade. A famous coin whose new home will surely be another collection of great importance. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Paul Karon Collection (Ponterio auction of April 2000, lot 1065) as well as the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988), pictured on the title page of his book Las acuñaciones de las cecas de Lima, La Plata y Potosí (1971), also plate coin on page 59 of Grunthal-Sellschopp's The Coinage of Peru (1978).

BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer B (1st period), "heavy" lions in cross, rare, ex-Ponte. S-P4; KM-5.1; Cal-672. 27.26 grams. Exceptionally broad flan (what Sellschopp referred to as "Great Module," which we now understand refers to certain coins in various periods) with excellent full crown and lots of bold legend, nice full shield and cross, AXF with deeply contrasting toning, one of several examples known struck from a single set of dies with a unique lion punch that was never seen again (Sellschopp 155, oddly overlooked by Paoletti). Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.

Another exceptionally broad flan (Sellschopp's "Great Module") with well-detailed but slightly doubled shield, full crown above and much bold legend including HISPANIARVM with H (the final issue within 1st-period B, missing in Sellschopp but listed as 67 in Paoletti), the cross also well detailed and doubled with 100% complete legend on that side, but best of all is the grade: lustrous, problem-free UNC (very rare for cobs)!. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.

An absolutely lovely example, with all details full including legends and crown (couple flat spots notwithstanding), of the famous C-under-erasure that Sellschopp once called La Plata in error, now known in three sets of dies (this one being Sellschopp 141 / Paoletti 59), attractively toned and in top grade. With the boldest and fullest 617 date imaginable, clearly hand-engraved on a die whose legend and border were erased at 10-11 o'clock specifically to make room for the newly mandated date (prefaced by a clear ANO DE in the new legend), it is easy to see why this coin has such an illustrious pedigree, despite some doubling in the bold full cross and shield, with clear P-M lacking middle dot to left, judiciously toned all over. It is worth noting that this first Potosí date was once rare, until the Atocha "Mother Lode" of 1985 yielded scores of fresh examples. Pedigreed to the Sellschopp Collection (stated on label, Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988, lot 616) and to the Charles Eidel Collection (Sedwick auction of November 2016, lot 760); Plate Coin 415 in Grunthal-Sellschopp's The Coinage of Peru (1978); and Plate Coin 379 in Sellschopp's Las acuñaciones de las cecas de Lima, La Plata y Potosí (1971). Full and bold ANO 1(6)46 with date in small digits as usual outside of full cross (with "furry" lions), the shield also full with bold denomination to right and fairly clear mintmark-assayer to left (could possibly be TR/V instead, unlisted either way), nice Fine with a few flat spots, hairline edge-crack. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.
BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1647 R, extremely rare, ex-Ponte, ex-Faistauer, Janson Plate.
BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1647 R, extremely rare, ex-Ponte, ex-Faistauer, Janson Plate. S-P31; KM-19a; Cal-1482; Janson-13.27.3. 26.01 grams. This is one of the most exciting Potosí shield-type 8R we have ever handled, as it is a "smoking gun" for the debasement scandal that resulted in a global monetary crisis and the eventual execution of its perpetrators, most notably the assayer Felipe Ramírez de Arellano, whose initial R stands out so clearly and boldly on this coin. In fact, almost everything on this broad-flan VF coin is visible, particularly the full and bold date in the nearly full legend, in addition to the full shield and cross that are much more evenly struck than usual for this period, with nice toning to boot. Overall, the coin seems almost like a failed "Royal" striking, with no other Royals of this assayer known for comparison. Perhaps most interesting of all, confirmed by its dull color and slightly low weight, is this coin's debased silver content, XRF-tested at 76.86% silver and 22.77% copper. By our records, it is a unique combination of date and assayer, as the only other 1647 8R known are T, TR or Z, although R is also known for 1646 and 1648, the latter date also seen with Z/R, after Zambrano finally replaced Ramírez, just one year before his execution for fraud and the official recall and melting of nearly all his coins in 1649. This important coin has spent many years in the hands of important collectors and will continue to do so. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and to the Faistauer Collection (Jess Peters auction of April 1976, lot 301), also to Sedwick Auction 18 (lot 635), Plate Coin on page 53 of Carlos Janson's La Moneda Circulante en el Territorio Argentino (2020).

Odd-shaped flan with unevenly thick peripheries, full and clear assayer (despite doubling) and very bold full 164 of date followed by a rounded final digit with two bottom curves, indicative of 9/8 (also with faint straight tail to left that could be a 7), but decidedly not "just" a 9, full but somewhat flat shield and cross, bold denomination •8•, lightly toned About Fine. Very broad flan with full crown and legends, choice full inner details (upper part of cross slightly doubled), XF with lovely old toning all over. The significance of the somewhat rarer P-R right instead of left is unknown, and while it is tempting to speculate, there appears to be no provable connection to La Plata vs. Potosí in the higher denominations, despite the fact that the move from left to right seems to have played such a role in 1R (see Stallard and Sedwick article in Sedwick Auction 30). Pedigreed to the Luis R. Solid AXF with nice toning, minimal surface porosity, central details mostly full (and without doubling) despite peripheral flat area, bold full 1652 date in legend, interesting type (Mastalir's IIB "mule") that shows how the cross side appears to have been settled on while the pillars side was further refined. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Capitana (1654) as well as Sedwick Auction 11 (lot 359), Plate Coin on page 113 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1653: The 1652 Transitional Minor Denominations, 4, 2, 1 and 1/2 Reales (2016).

BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales Royal (galano), 1658 E, NGC XF details / holed. Ex-Espinola. S-P37a; KM-R21; Cal-1423. 26.47 grams. Broad flan with 100% full and well-struck details, rich old toning all over, quite lovely like most Royals of this period, typically holed at top of pillars / bottom of cross (as the coin is in almost perfect coin alignment), die-match with Lázaro 157 (rated R2) but even clearer than his example, to the extent that you can see that both the mintmarks on the pillars side have strange bottom-left extensions, perhaps related to the known error on this year's Royal 8R with mintmark and assayer transposed. BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales Heart, 1709 Y, NGC XF details / environmental damage, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-von Schuckmann. S-P43a; KM-unl; Cal-1525. 28.09 grams. As a type, the rarest and most highly sought pieces in Potosí cobs are Hearts, intentionally shaped at the mint and struck with Royal dies, presumably to be worn or otherwise displayed in a religious setting, as the flaming Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ was (and is) an important symbol in the Catholic Church. The first Hearts were struck in the late 1680s, then issued sporadically until the 1750s. The most desirable Hearts are the 8 reales, of which our records indicate only 41 examples exist across 17 dates, this being only the fifth we have offered, a die-match with Lázaro 324 (rated RU for unique, but not the same coin as this one, itself a die-match with the Royal issue per Lázaro 250), but with its "tail" pointing right instead of left relative to the pillars side, all deeply toned and boldly struck with just a few spots of surface oxidation, minimal doubling and no flatness, and (best of all) medal-aligned with its scalloped-edge stem, holed as usual, to make for a perfect pendant, as no doubt it was in its time. Pedigreed to the Siegfried von Schuckmann Collection (Renaissance auction of December 2000, lot 678). Please use this link to verify the certification number
