AU+ with bold full cross-and-tressure (well centered) showing all four dimple-rings but just the bottom tips of the date, nearly full shield with lions sitting on their rumps (a style that began the year before), sediment in crevices.

Choice full cross (enhanced by sediment in crevices) that shows clear balls at ends, a characteristic of the date 1709 only (date not visible), nearly full shield with very slight doubling, UNC overall.

Very broad flan with full shield and cross, bold full PHILIP to right of shield and clear bottom half of date outside of cross, minor weak spots, sediment in crevices, distinctive post-1715 type with dots in dimple-rings within which only the date 1719 has been confirmed, this being the finer of only two examples known to us (even if only VF).

Gold "finger bar" end-cut, 129 grams, marked with fineness XIX• (19¼K), ex-"Golden Fleece Wreck" (ca. 1550). About 2" x 1" x 3/8". A neat little "thumb" of gold with bright and lustrous surfaces, the cut end with clean chisel and break, the rounded (uncut) end with bold full fineness in bordered boxes (one with XIX and the other with a dot) at the very tip, small enough to be used as a form of coinage in its time (since no gold coins were being produced in the colonies) but big enough to still have the flavor of a "finger bar" ingot. With photo-certificate.

Gold "finger bar" ingot 548, 455 grams, tested at 21½K fine gold, marked with three partial tax stamps, ex-Atocha (1622), with hand-signed certificate from 1976. 6" x 1" x 1/2". Dark gold in color and neatly cast in a "half cigar" shape with relatively flat top bearing three light stamps that show only the outer dotted border of a Royal tax seal (typically minimally applied to conserve the seal itself), no markings of serial number, assayer/foundry or fineness but with typical removal at one end for testing in its time (the other end naturally round), desirable as not just a pre-"Mother Lode" find but also certified as found several years prior to the big yield of gold bars in 1980 when the site of the Santa Margarita was positively identified. From the Atocha (1622), with original Fisher photo-certificate 548 from 1976 (Cape Coral Bank), hand-signed by Eugene Lyon, Duncan Mathewson, Austin Fowles, Melvin (Mel) and Dolores (Deo) Fisher, pedigreed to the J.P. Silberman Estate.

Gold bar ingot from Colombia, 915 grams, marked with fineness XXII (22K), circular tax stamp, and foundry stamp (B)ARBACO(A)S, ex-1715 Fleet, ex-Anderson, Craig and Richards Plate. 5-1/4" x 1-1/2" x 1/2". A complete, wide, rectangular ingot with rounded bottom and relatively flat top with a wealth of markings interspersed with natural ripples from the metal-cooling process, including fineness XXII in a box at one end and a nearly full crowned-shield tax stamp in center, between which is a large and fairly clear rectangular assayer/foundry cartouche with dotted border containing the name (B)ARBACO(A)S, the same as seen on a very similar ingot we sold in 2015 but with a different part of the cartouche visible (which we mistakenly called BARBAROSA), both ingots in fact featured in the Craig and Richards book as being among five high-karat gold bars found "in one day by divers from John Brandon's M/V Endeavor working the 1715 site commonly called 'Corrigan's' at Vero Beach," the design of their markings leading us to conclude they were cast in Colombia, in which we note there is an important gold-mining town in Nariño Department called Barbacoas, no doubt where this bar was produced. Fine gold ingots like this one from the 1715 Fleet are rather rare (much rarer than 1622 Fleet, for example). From the 1715 Fleet, with original Cobb Coin Co. photo-certificate 255 from 1983 (748 points) and official re-issued photo-certificate (1000 points), plated on page 114 and back cover of Spanish Treasure Bars (2003), by Craig and Richards, a copy of which accompanies this lot, also pedigreed to the collection of Don Anderson (the investor originally responsible for computerization of the Treasure Salvors division records, mentioned several times in The Search for the Atocha [1979], by Eugene Lyon).

A hefty chunk of gold broken from a thick disk of somewhat low-karat gold (perhaps from melted-down native artifacts?), typical of similar finds from the Douglass Beach site of the 1715 Fleet, including, notably, this piece's twin showing same fineness marking in the famous "Treasure of the Spanish Main" auction of Real Eight Company holdings by Parke-Bernet of New York in February 1967, namely lot 25, which, according to notes made by another bidder in his catalog at that sale, Dr. John K. Lattimer, was purchased by the Smithsonian Institution. The current ingot shows a curious ¼" chisel mark (very clean) to start the cut, the rest of the separation crudely broken and craggy, with light pinkish coral and sediment now residing in the crevices, also with a spot of white coral in bubble-pit on marked side, very bold fineness marking (and nothing else) in center, with weaker fineness marking near edge on flat side too (with coral inside the X). In general, gold or even silver ingots from the 1715 Fleet are rare, as most of the cargo was in the form of coins. From the 1715 Fleet, with generic certificate and Sedwick photo-certificate.

Gold oval ingot, 645.26 grams, tested at 0.819 fine gold (19.656K), marked with V-over-upside-down-V monogram and XXIII, ex-Luz (1752), ex-Sotheby's. 3-1/2" x 1-3/4" in diameter and up to 3/4" thick. A very attractive compact ingot with all surfaces hammered smooth in its time, both on the rounded bottom and on the flat top, with markings on both sides including a serial number XXIII (on bottom) and an owner/consignor whose name or "call sign" was a monogram that looks like A/V (on top), no tax stamps or cuts (as probably contraband and/or connected to Jesuit missions) but with some faint file marks on part of edge where the fineness was tested contemporaneously. From the Luz (1752), pedigreed to Sotheby's Uruguayan Treasure of the River Plate auction of March 1993, with original lot-tag 757 and Sotheby's catalog.

Chinese rectangular "sycee" gold ingot number 53, 369 grams, 21K fine, marked with Chinese characters "yuan ji bao" ("gold ingot") on top along with "yuan" on bottom, ex-"Nanking Cargo" (1752), ex-Christie's (1986). 块中国长方形“元宝”金锭，编号为53，重369克，成色21K，顶部刻有汉字“元记宝”，底部刻有“元”字，曾出自“南京货”（1752年）和佳士得（1986年）。 About 3-1/8" x 1" x 1/2". Perhaps the most elusive of all shipwreck ingots despite the Christie's offering of over 126 of them on this wreck (among 147 listed on the original manifest of the Geldermalsen), the Chinese shoe-shaped "sycees" in gold are extremely rare, their existence nearly wiped out by melting over the years, somewhat ironic since their original composition is melted-down foreign gold coins from their time, as the Chinese always preferred copper for daily exchange and used the gold only for large gifts or overseas payments, hence the need to store the gold in a compact and uniform state. Curiously, Christie's notes that the gold ingots from this wreck were not in the main cargo but a bit separated from it yet found all together, as if they were in the possession of a single passenger trying to get away! Like almost all the others, our bar bears on its lustrous top surface a central "double gourd"-shaped cartouche with the Chinese letters "yuan ji" plus two peripheral square cartouches (one at each end) containing the Chinese letter "bao," one covered with white encrustation, the sides of the ingot narrowly sloping upward with brownish encrustation embedded, and the bottom with two lightly stamped Chinese characters "yuan" (one at each end), overall in superb (undamaged) condition and a lovely little display with great original auction packaging. Silver "tumbaga" bar C-280, 2887 grams, marked with finenesses IV @ L X X X (1580/2400, 65.8% fine) and IV9C L x x x (1680/2400), 70% fine), assayer B~Vo, and serial R L X X X, ex-"Tumbaga Wreck" (ca. 1528), ex-Christie's (1993), García-Barneche Plate. 2889 grams. 10" x 3" x 5/8". A very well-marked bar of manageable size, still a bit dark and with spots of orange encrustation on bottom as uncleaned (sold at Christie's before Armstrong conserved the rest), the markings on top indicative of two different assays with divergent results, the lower one with "&" symbols above and below and the higher one with R-series and assayer B~Vo marks above, also with the diagonal assayer's "bite" in the corner showing two separate cuts, partial circular tax stamps at either end. Pedigreed to the original Christie's (London) auction of April 1993 (lot 280), with Sedwick photo-certificate, and plated on page 118 of Agustín García-Barneche's The "Tumbaga" Saga, 2nd ed. (2018), a copy of which accompanies this lot.

Small silver "plata corriente" piece cut from a "splash" ingot, 42.4 grams, ex-ca.-1554 wreck off Santo Domingo, ex-Ponte. 42.40 grams. Roughly 1¼" x 1½". Curiously L-shaped piece due to breaking around a bubble in the original ingot whose outer edge makes up one straight side on this piece, unfortunately not broken off in such a way as to include a tax stamp or any other markings but still interesting and desirable as from what is believed to be a Spanish 1554 Fleet ship sunk off Santo Domingo and sold by Ponterio ca. 2007. From an unidentified ca.-1554 wreck off Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and Sedwick Auction 11, with original lot-tag 210 and Sedwick photo-certificate.

Large silver ingot 632 from Potosi, 84 lb 5.12 oz troy, Class Factor 1.0, with markings of mine/date Po1622, manifest IULXXIX (1079), fineness IIUCCCLXXX (2380/2400, 99.17% fine), owners/shippers, silvermaster, and tax stamps, ex-Atocha (1622). 13¾" x 5½" x 3½". A neatly rectangular bar with lots of bold markings on top, particularly the manifest and fineness (with faint assayer Mexía cartouche) above and below the double-scoop assayer's "bite" in center, but also with bold MB and (double-cut) A-diamond monograms for owners/shippers to either side, the former also next to an effaced diamond-topped T, plus silvermaster B and three small slashes at one end, and three faint circular tax stamps; but best of all is the clear but lightly impressed cartouche of Po1622 to the left of the fineness, meriting this bar's top Class Factor rating. Large silver ingot 377 from Potosí, 83 lb 11.36 oz troy, Class Factor 0.9, with markings of mine/date Po1622, manifest CCCL (350), fineness IIUCCCLXXX (2380/2400), owner/shipper, silvermaster, and tax stamps, ex-Atocha (1622). 14" x 5" x 3½". A very well-formed and well-marked ingot for the given Class Factor, as it displays all the possible markings: mine/date cartouche Po1622 to left of manifest number above double-scoop assayer's "bite"; clear assayer Mexía cartouche to right of very bold fineness; small but bold owner/shipper monogram CA; silvermaster V (de Vreder) in one corner; and three of the clearest Philip IV tax stamps we have seen, even with king's name and ordinal IIII visible. In addition, this piece is accompanied by a special packet of certification, including original photo-certificate inscribed by Mel Fisher "Today's the day, Julian! - Mel" in a sleeve showing a Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum sticker that says I LIFTED A GOLD BAR, plus two postcards and a set of twelve personal photos of Mel signing the certificate and posing with an investors (presumably named Julian) and his family. Large silver ingot 161 from Oruro, 78 lb 3.52 oz troy, Class Factor 0.8, with markings of manifest CLIIII (154), fineness IIUCCCLXXX (2380/2400), owner/shipper, silvermaster, and tax stamps, ex-Atocha (1622). 15½" x 5½" x 3". Interesting shape for one of these ingots, as the top is somewhat oval and the sides slope to a crude and narrowish bottom, the top with very bold marking of manifest number near one corner, owner/shipper monogram (ME) near side in center, and slightly weaker fineness near other side, silvermaster V (de Vreder) marked in another corner inside a diagonal slash (seen on several of the bars found and believed to indicate the amount to be extracted as an "avería" tax upon arrival) at one end that shows a shallow cylindrical assayer's "bite" (oddly hammered flat there in its time), plus a few faint circular tax-stamps, lightly corroded overall. Large silver ingot 787 from Oruro, 85 lb 5.28 oz troy, Class Factor 0.7, with markings of manifest CCLXXXI (281), fineness IIUCCCLXXX (2380/2400), owner/shipper, silvermaster, and early tax stamps, ex-Atocha (1622). 16" x 5" x 3¼". Contrary to its Class Factor rating, this bar is actually well marked, with bold, full, and very clear markings of manifest (CCLXXXI), owner/shipper (AVL monogram), and silvermaster (V for de Vreder) in corners, plus a full fineness marking flanked by rectangular assayer cartouches, one of which shows a fairly clear LITO / ERA (probably with other letters in monogram), plus four small circular tax stamps, one of which shows a very clear shield and legend PHILIPVS DG HISPANI, the lack of an ordinal possibly indicative of manufacture in the time of Philip II (hence 1500s). The usual cylindrical assayer's "bite" at one end is somewhat hidden in the steep slope near the bottom. In addition, this ingot is accompanied by a special packet of certification, including original photo-certificate inscribed by Mel Fisher "Today's the day, Julian! - Mel" in a sleeve showing a Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum sticker that says I LIFTED A GOLD BAR, plus two postcards and a set of twelve personal photos of Mel signing the certificate and posing with an investor (presumably named Julian) and his family. Silver "wedge" ingot marked with V or monogram thereof, 1160 grams, ex-1715 Fleet. 1154 grams. Roughly 4" x 3½" x 2". Wedge-shaped ingots like this are known from the 1715 Fleet and other wrecks as contraband, supposedly placed together like slices of a pie in false bottoms of barrels to avoid tax. This example is somewhat crude, with curious pits and encrustation (as uncleaned, still dark) but atypically marked on top with a V (or monogram including a V) to indicate its secret owner, the bottom bearing two small holes where we believe this ingot rested on small posts for display in some bygone museum. From the 1715 Fleet, with 1990s-era generic certificate.

Small silver "plata corriente" piece cut from a "splash" ingot with partial tax stamp, 28.58 grams, ex-Ponte. roughly 1-1/8" x 7/8". An edge-piece with tapered side, the broken edges thick and rough and harboring brown sediment, with clear partial tax stamp showing (H)ISPAN, clearly worn as no doubt circulated in its time (1500s) as an 8 reales. Small silver "plata corriente" piece cut from a "splash" ingot with partial tax stamp, 19.08 grams, ex-Ponte, García-Barneche Plate. Roughly 1" x ¾". Odd, thick chunk with one edge rounded from the shape of the original ingot, the other sides crude and harboring sediment, clear partial tax stamp with -VS D G of legend visible, clearly worn from circulation in its time (1500s) as a something like a 6 reales (by weight). Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and Sedwick Auction 20, with original lot-tag 224, and plated on page 23 of Agustín García-Barneche's The "Tumbaga" Saga, 2nd ed. (2018).

Small silver "plata corriente" piece cut from a "splash" ingot, marked with Charles I tax stamp, 12.1 grams. 12.08 grams. About 1/8" thick and ¾" to 1" in diameter. Disk-like piece with edge rounded from circulation or smoothing, curiously with large bubble-hole on bottom and marked on top with a very deep partial tax stamp featuring (C)AROLV(S) for King Charles I (or Emperor Charles V), a premium piece that surely circulated in its time (mid-1500s) as a 4 reales.

Small silver "plata corriente" piece cut from a "splash" ingot with partial tax stamp, 11.81 grams, ex-Ponte, García-Barneche Plate. Roughly 1¼" x ¾". Thinner than usual but with very bold partial tax stamp showing (HIS)PANI, dark in crevices for good contrast, cut from the rounded edge of the original ingot, well circulated in its time (1500s) as a 4 reales. Small silver "plata corriente" piece cut from a "splash" ingot, marked with partial tax stamp, 5.8 grams. 5.82 grams. 1" x ½". Unlike most, this rectangular piece was chiseled on three sides, with some bubbly texture on bottom and bold partial tax stamp with undecipherable lettering on top, the cuts rather clean and sharp, a small piece that probably circulated as a 2 reales in its time.

Choice example of the last of the rounded-panel coins to be struck before the change to a rhomboid panel (which was adopted by later assayers as well), with steel-gray toning, struck on a broad flan, some doubling on shield side rendering queen's name as IOOHAN, full legends and interiors in Latin lettering (including the common but strange use of a retrograde N), a small wedge of metal missing on edge. MEXICO, Mexico City, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer P to right, mintmark M to left (oMo-oPo), motto as PLVS in left-leaning rhomboid panel, 4 over rotated 4 in denomination, very rare, / corrosion. Nesmith-26c type; Cal-123;S-M4; KM-17. 12.05 grams. Very rare mint mistake in which the denomination "4" was originally punched in the die at a 90 degree tilt and then corrected. Struck on a full-flan, AU with light surface corrosion, spots of toning, full legends and interiors (a later issue from this assayer with HISPANIARVM in the pillars legend); this is an important coin for the serious collector. Recovered from: “Golden Fleece wreck,” sunk ca. 1550 in the northern Caribbean

PERU, Lima, "Star of Lima" type, cob 8 reales presentation strike, 1659 V, mintmark * above LIMA, V to left and 8 to right, rare, NGC AU details / saltwater damage, ex-Ullian. S-L5; KM-18.1; Cal-1243. 26.85 grams. As we have noted in several articles, the "Jupiter Wreck" is known for yielding an important group of very well-struck sample presentation pieces of the 1659 "Star of Lima" issue that was struck without authorization from the King, who was the intended recipient but obviously never saw these samples. Among these are a few very choice 8 reales like this lot, which we called finest known when we first sold it in 2009 from the unadvertised holdings of the famous Florida diver/collector and original Real Eight Co. member Lou Ullian. Later, this coin was a highlight in our first floor auction in 2014. With satin-smooth surfaces graced with lovely toning, this piece features a beautifully detailed full crown above pillars containing *-LIMA-1659 above pristine waves, •V• to left and •8• to right inside king's name PHILIPPVS in the legend, also with perfect lions and castles inside bold cross on other side whose legend shows curiously reversed N's, both sides slightly off-center and with just a hint of surface corrosion but otherwise superb, fully UNC (despite what NGC says), and truly one of the loveliest shipwreck 8 reales you will ever see. BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1710 Y, very rare provenance, housed in original frame with certificate, ex-Whydah (1717). S-P43a; KM-31; Cal-1546. 26.4 grams. 21¾" x 13½" (frame). Full date and pillars-and-waves (other side not on view) with light toning and no visible corrosion, elegantly framed with its original certificate and postcard showing an engraving of the ship as from a presentation to investors in 1987 that proposed to turn the Whydah museum into a Florida theme park. One of the more important numismatic aspects of the famous Whydah finds is the fact that a relatively large amount of cobs from Lima and Potosi were recovered, perhaps explaining the relative paucity of those coins found from the 1715 Fleet in our time—in other words, the majority of those coins were taken off the Fleet wrecks by pirates and ended up with Bellamy on the Whydah! As with all the coins selected for these displays, the original certificate mistakenly calls the mint "Mexico"; we have left the display intact, however, as a relic of the investment scheme that indirectly brought otherwise unobtainable Whydah coins to market in recent years. This piece looks just like a typical, perfectly square-shaped klippe with full details, practically no corrosion, and lightly toned fields... until you notice the low weight, porosity, and low fineness (XRF tested at 80% silver) that make this piece a cast contemporary counterfeit (found among genuine examples on the wreck), just as it was described in the original Ponterio auction. Curiously, we have not seen any others of this counterfeit, nor the original it was cast from. The SS New York shipwreck proved to be a fascinating time capsule of American "pocket change" in the early 1800s. A tight, leaning stack of seven solid Seated Liberty half dollars held together by a chunk of orange encrustation, the coins essentially as stored aboard the ship prior to sinking, with top coin featuring a lightly encrusted yet visible obverse with barely legible 1860s date (final digit unclear) while two others in the stack also show partial details, a rare artifact as most of the coins recovered from this wreck were thoroughly cleaned, slabbed, and sold individually. VF note with staining and edge degradation along the right and bottom from immersion in ocean water yet otherwise possessing bold ink colors and nice paper quality due to being tightly bound in bundles when stored in the First Class bank safe. Encased in a Lucite holder contained in a display box accompanied by a salvager's certificate and promotional DVD entitled "S.S. Andrea Doria: A Journey of Adventure."
